2010 All Iowa Points Champions Announced
With the cancellation of "Shiverfest" due to wet grounds at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, the 2010 racing season in and nearby the state of Iowa is complete and so too is the chase for the 2010 All Iowa Points titles.
The Late Model division was dominated by Ray Guss Jr. who rolled up twenty-six feature wins as part of sixty top five finishes in a season where he won the IMCA Late Model National Championship, the Deery Brothers Summer Series and three track championships. It is the second straight All Iowa Late Model title for Guss and his fifth overall state championship with titles in 1989, 1990 and 1991 proving that this veteran driver has staying power. Terry Neal had a solid season himself and usually his seventeen wins and thirty-six top-fives would have him right in the hunt for the state title, but this year he finished 98 points behind Guss in second, the second year in a row that these drivers have finished one-two. On the strength of twelve feature wins Jeff Aikey wound up in the third spot ahead of Andy Eckrich who tallied eight wins, and Craig Preble dominated out at I-80 Speedway with thirteen wins to end up in fifth. Rob Toland, Denny Woodworth, Darrel DeFrance, Todd Cooney and Merk Burgtorf completed the top ten.
The Modified race was tight throughout the season with the top seven drivers ending the year within twenty-two points of each other. Ryan Dolan emerged from the pack at the end of the year to earn his first-ever All Iowa Points title on the strength of fourteen feature wins and thirty-five top five finishes. Michael Long stayed in the hunt right down to the end ringing up twenty-one feature wins on AIP tracks, but with eight fewer top fives than Dolan he came up ten points short. Sioux City driver Jimmy Cole garnered twelve checkered flags on his way to a third-place finish, Doug Crampton picked up eleven wins around the Quad Cities area to rank fourth while 2009 champion Jeremy Mills and mid-season leader Richie Gustin tied for fifth. Scott Hogan was one point behind them in seventh, Jimmy Gustin was eighth, Minnesota driver Jason Cummins was ninth and two-time Modified champion Mark Schulte (2006 & 2007) completed the top ten.
With twenty-two feature wins and fifty-two top five finishes there was no stopping Dustin Smith from claiming his third straight All Iowa Points Stock Car Championship. Nathan Wood drove two different cars in two different sanctioning bodies to win eleven times and finish second while Chad Palmer also won eleven times to settle into third in the final standings. With twenty feature wins on the season Matt Greiner was one-point behind Palmer in fourth while Jason Ward collected seventeen victories to finish in fifth. Damon Murty was sixth, seventh went to early contender Kevin Opheim, former Hobby Stock state champion Donavon Smith (2006) was eighth, Jake Masters was ninth and Matt Werner completed the top ten.
In 2009 Jesse Sobbing won the IMCA Northern Sport Mod National title and finished third in the All Iowa Points. This year Sobbing emerged from a three-driver battle to earn his first AIP championship racking up sixteen feature wins and posting forty-one top five finishes along the way. Last year’s runner-up Austin Kaplan will share that honor once again this season with young Cayden Carter as these two drivers finished seven points shy of Sobbing. Kaplan had seventeen wins on All Iowa Points tracks while Carter had nineteen. Tad Reutzel was in victory lane nineteen times on his way to a fourth-place ranking while Scott Davis finished in the top five for the second year in a row, this year in fifth. Brett Meyer was sixth, Jeremy Embrey was seventh, while Brandon Hare, Beau Kaplan and Jason McDaniel rounded out the top ten.
The Hobby Stock championship was decided on what turned out to be the final weekend of racing in the state as a fourth and a second at Buena Vista Raceway was just what Devin Smith needed to edge out Dustin Larson by just one point for the title. Devin is the third of the Lake City Smith brothers to be an All Iowa Points champion and he did it on the strength of twenty-four feature wins and fifty-two top five finishes. Larson won five more times (29), but had eight fewer top-five finishes to end up just one point short of his first championship. Two-time defending Hobby Stock champion Shannon Anderson was third with twenty wins on AIP paying tracks, Chad Gentz was in the top ten for the third straight year, this time in fourth, while northwest Iowa driver Shane Klaassen filled out the top five. Michael Murphy, John Watson, Stac Schroeder, Chris Hovden and John Cain were sixth through tenth.
It took him a couple of months to get there, but once Nate Coopman made his way back to the top of the Four Cylinder standings there was no keeping him from taking his second straight All Iowa Points championship in the division. Coopman rang up twenty-two feature wins along the way to finish thirty points ahead of runner-up Nathan Chandler. Chandler, who improved from a fifth-place finish in 2009, collected nine checkered flags on his schedule that included racing on both dirt and asphalt. David Miller of Sioux City was third ahead of Bill Whalen Jr. who likely visited more tracks in 2010 than any other driver. Cody Thompson was fifth while Jaconb Ellithorpe, Brad Chandler, Mick Rykhus, Tyler Kelly and Jeremy Campbell completed the top ten.
In the Sprint Car divisions Mark Dobmeier had four wins and nineteen top-fives to take his fourth All Iowa Points title in the past five years in the 410 class. Early season leader Lynton Jeffrey was second followed by Brian Brown, Gregg Bakker and Sammy Swindell. The 360 division finished in a dead heat as Eric Lutz and Jack Dover both tallied 53 points. Clint Garner was third and Cody Hansen was fourth while Brian Brown also had a top five in this division. And in the 305’s a third-place finish by Casey Friedrichsen in the final race of the year at Jackson broke the tie between he and runner-up Ryan Voss. Kevin Hetrick’s schedule was limited due to several rainouts at 34 Raceway, but he still managed a third-place run, Bruce Anderson was fourth and there was a tie for fifth between Tasker Phillips and Tommy Barber.
A full run down of the 2010 All Iowa Points along with an explanation of how the points are compiled can be found on the Points page at Positively Racing. And, check back here throughout the offseason as I am working on filling in the gap from 2000 to 2005 when I did not compile the points. I should have the 2000 season completed soon and through July of that year your leaders were Gary Webb, Ron Barker, Tom Hanson, Jeff Anderson, Randy Embrey, Larry Cook, Terry McCarl and Tim St. Arnold. If Webb held on it would be his eighth AIP Late Model championship and would tie him with Ed Sanger who also has eight titles.

Iowa & Missouri Points Update; Shiverfest Thoughts
Our webmistress Sue has been busy this week, but soon she should have up the latest update of the All Iowa and All Missouri Points at Positively Racing.
When I heard last week that Memphis MO was planning to run a show on Sunday October 24th I started looking at the All Iowa points to see what divisions would still be up for grabs with two shows left; Shiverfest on Saturday and Memphis on Sunday. The answer? Three. Modifieds, Limited Modifieds and Hobby Stocks. But now, with the Sunday show at Memphis pulled off of the schedule only one divisional title remains up for grabs as Shiverfest completes the Iowa racing season.
All Iowa Points
Late Models - Ray Guss Jr. clinched this thing back in May it seems like. Will anybody ever have such a dominating season in this class again? I have him for 26 feature wins as part of 60 top five finishes. Amazing! LateModelRacer.com had Guss rated on top when the Iowa standings were originally posted, but after further review Chad Simpson tookover the top spot.
Modifieds - Michael Long won two features at Memphis last weekend, while Ryan Dolan won one at West Liberty. The spread is now 10 points between the two and it would have taken two more wins this coming weekend by Long, and no top five for Dolan, to produce a tie, but now with only one show left Dolan will win his first-ever All Iowa Points title.
Limited Mods - Jesse Sobbing holds a 7-point lead over both Austin Kaplan and Cayden Carter. Carter had an opportunity to get as many as 10 points on tracks that he is very familiar with, but now even a win at Shiverfest will leave him two points shy of Sobbing who will take the state title.
Stock Cars - Dustin Smith wins it for the third year in a row.
Hobby Stocks - This is the one division that is still in play with Devin Smith leading Dustin Larson by just one point. Smith lives in northwest Iowa and Larson is from south central Minnesota, so chances are that neither will attend the final points race of the year here in the southeast corner of Iowa. Looks like Devin will become the third Smith brother to earn an All Iowa Points title as Donavon won the Hobby Stock championship in 2006.
Four Cylinder - Nate Coopman holds a 30-point lead and will repeat his title.
410 Sprints - Mark Dobmeier is a champion once again, his fourth title in the last five years.
360 Sprints - This one will end in a tie, the first tie ever in the All Iowa points compiled since 1967, as Eric Lutz and Jack Dover have the same leading point total.
305 Sprints - Casey Friederichsen wins this one by the three points that he earned on the final night of racing at Jackson Speedway
All Missouri Points
Still a few events on the schedule here as Valley Speedway runs this Saturday night, Butler Speedway runs on Sunday afternoon and the Thanksgiving weekend event at Springfield Raceway closes out the season.
Late Models - With two shows remaining (Butler and Springfield), defending champ Donnie Timmerman needs two wins to repeat, or a win and a second to tie current leader Larry Jones. Of course this assumes that Jones does not run in the top five at either event. One fourth-place finish, or two fifths will clinch the championship for Jones.
Modifieds - I'm still trying to chase down results from Callaway Raceway after 9/17 that could change this, but as of now Jesse Stovall owns a three point advantage over Jason Russell (who would benefit most from the missing Callaway results), a six point lead over Rusty Griffaw and a ten point lead over Jackie Dalton. Dalton has won the last two weeks at Butler and is no stranger to Springfield so two more wins and we would be looking at another tie, unless Stovall gets back in the Modified again. He has won a couple of Late Model shows recently driving for Steve Rushin.
Limited Mods - Brad Smith trails Colt Cheevers by 13 points and would need at least a win and two second-place finishes over these last three races to repeat his title. Of course Cheevers could lock it up with a top-five finish or two of his own.
Sprints - Jonathan Cornell will edge out both Josh Fisher and Randy Martin by just one point.
Crates/Limited Late Models - With 16 feature wins on the season it is all Vance Wilson.
Now I spend most of my time checking the different weather sites hoping for a favorable forecast for this Saturday's Shiverfest at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. Yes, there is a chance of showers, but no it does not look like an all-day rain event. So hopefully the show will go on as scheduled and don't forget about Practice Night and the Pit Party on Friday!
Wouldn't you know it, come Friday we will have gone 20 straight days without receiving any measurable precipitation. Is Mother Nature trying to tells us something about this event?
Hope to see you in Donnellson this weekend!

Trips To Valley and Memphis
I have continued my trend the past two Saturdays of going to races and not staying until the end for one reason or another. Two weekends ago I needed to be at the Kansas City airport early on Sunday to catch a flight so I booked a hotel near the airport and figured that I would take in a race in the area on Saturday night. I first looked at going to Thunder Hill Speedway in Mayetta, Kansas, as my two previous visits there were very entertaining. However, when I heard that the Friday night program featuring MLRA Late Models and several other classes ran until nearly 2:30 in the morning I decided that I needed something that would provide me with a little more sleep. My next choice was night number two of the Jayhawk Modified Classic at Lakeside Speedway, and while it was definitely a good event with a solid car count from night one on a track that I have enjoyed my earlier visits at, the lure of something new and different was calling my name.
I had never been to Valley Speedway before and the track in Grain Valley, Missouri, had an interesting show featuring non-wing Sprint Cars on tap. Add in the Modifieds, B-Mods, Street Stocks, four cylinder Dirt Demons and the 600cc Mini-Sprints with a six o’clock scheduled start time and I made my decision. I was going to add a new track to my roster by going to Valley. I had actually stopped here before just to check the place out on a previous trip to Kansas City so it did not surprise me that the Sand Drags were going on at the same time just behind the oval track’s grandstand area. The track is a big quarter-mile with nice banking in the corners, and while it seemed a bit narrow there were definitely two distinct lines being used by the competitors. The show started a bit later than advertised, partially due to a nasty flip by one of the sprints during hot laps, but once things got started the heat races were run off at a reasonable pace. The flagman seemed to be a little quick with the caution as in one case a sprint car got sideways and the caution waved despite the fact that the driver recovered and continued on. He didn’t do a 360, he just got sideways, so it was the first time that I saw a caution for a sprint car that didn’t require the assistance of a push truck. The guy was consistent though and if that is what the competitors here expect, then that is how it should continue to be done. For a fan like me though, who is used to tracks where drivers are encouraged to pop the clutch, keep it running and get back to racing or risk being sent to the pits for causing a caution, it really started to add up and when they went to intermission I looked at my watch and decided that it was a good time to head for the hotel to catch a full night of sleep before flying.
Based on this experience, would I go to Valley Speedway again? Absolutely! The racing was good, the track was nicely prepared as I don’t think I felt a speck of dust all night, the announcer did a nice job of letting you know who was driving what and where they were from and they draw a solid field of cars on a weekly basis. If a full day of flying and business wasn’t ahead of me, I would have never left.
This past Saturday commitments during the day had me in northern Missouri so I wound up at the Scotland County Speedway for night number two of the Pepsi Nationals in Memphis. Rick Girard has stepped out of his Stock Car and picked up the promotional duties here late in the season and he was blessed with incredible weather for this traditional end-of-season event. Again I had heard about a very late night of action on Friday night where the final checkers flew at 2:45 a.m. so before I purchased my pit pass I decided that I would set my own curfew on this night to make sure that I would be home at a reasonable hour given that I had a full Sunday of family activities on the horizon.
163 cars were on hand in seven divisions an the grandstand was as full as I have ever seen it, even back when I made my first trip down here for this same event in 1980 when they were running on the old half-mile. The last run by the water truck as the sun was about to set required some extra packing, but once we were up and racing there was definitely two or three grooves to be found around the big 3/8-mile oval. The heat races went off pretty good until the first Late Model qualifier that saw only three of the nine starters make it to the checkers after several incidents. The final two Late Model heats were much better and all heat race action was complete around 9:10. Hot laps for the cars who had qualified by finishing in the top six the night before followed and at 9:25 an intermission that featured a candy dash and several prize giveaways began.
The first of two B-Mains rolled out around ten o’clock and the first feature, the Four Cylinders, hit the track at 10:30. Devin Still, who is perhaps the top driver in this division from northern Missouri, held off Friday’s winner Bill Michel to take the first feature win of the night. Michel, the 2010 Track Champion at Donnellson, was behind the wheel of Chuck Fullenkamp’s #48 for the weekend. I believe that the B-Mods were up next for their feature event and it was Curtis VanDerWal who took the victory. VanDerWal you may remember was a regular competitor on the asphalt surface of Hawkeye Downs the past couple of years, but is now seeming to find his groove on the dirt again with this B-Modified. Young Cayden Carter came in second, Jason McDaniel who has picked up a few wins here in 2010 already finished third while Andrew Schroeder and Mike Shelton completed the top five.
The Hobby Stock feature was a wild one with some controversy, two hard rollovers and a fight in the infield. The fight stemmed from an incident about six laps in when early leader Dan Wenig spun to the infield. Now I will admit that I was looking at something going on back in the pack so I did not see whether or not there was contact from the second-place car of Mike Hughes who was driving the #18 of Kris Walker. Wenig spun down into the infield and continued moving, but the caution waved anyway so I figured that Hughes was going to be penalized. (By the way, anybody who would like to question why the caution came out given the fact that nobody had stopped on the track, please feel free to approach the extremely large, but friendly, flagman and state your concern) It took awhile to get both Wenig and Hughes to the back of the realignment and eventually crew chiefs from each car began to dook it out in the infield down near turn one.
On the double-file restart Dustin Griffiths climbed the wheel of another competitor and took a hard rollover ride just at the start of the grandstands on the frontstretch. After a long cleanup process the race resumed with Dean Kratzer taking the checkers just as Dane Fenton went for a wild ride down the backstretch. Clayton Crump finished second followed by Jake Wenig, Nathan Wood and Steve Allen.
The IMCA Modified feature went off without major incident with two-time All Iowa Points champion Mark Schulte taking the victory ahead of Friday night’s winner Rich Smith. Lonne Heap had a strong showing in third, Jeff Waterman was solid in fourth and Wyatt Lantz rounded out the top five.
The Open Modified feature had a lap or two in the books before a metal crunching four-car pileup right in front of the grandstand involving Craig Spegal, Bill Baker, Martin Bennett and Charles Baker. Fortunately all drivers crawled out of their cars under their own power, but when I checked my watch I saw that my self-imposed midnight curfew had arrived and I headed for home with three features yet to be completed. Michael Long would go on to win the Open Mod main event to complete the weekend sweep, Matt Greiner would make it two wins in a row in the Stock Cars and Jason Perry would fight off Missouri drivers Tom Cordray and Jason Bodenhammer to win the Late Models. I do want to make a special mention of the fifth-place finisher in that one as Steven DeLonjay drove the #79 of Robby Warner to a top five finish. Steven also finished second to Long in the Open Mods, so it was a pretty darn good night for the second-generation shoe out of Quincy.
I want to thank the voice of the Scotland County Speedway, Andy Middleton for all of the plugs that he gave “Shiverfest” during the evening. Andy did a great job as usual of informing and entertaining the crowd and he also announced that the track would be in action again on Sunday aftermoon October 24th. However, I see that they have now decided to not race this coming Sunday at Memphis.
This coming Saturday night I can virtually guarantee that I will stay for the end, and then some, at the annual “Shiverfest” at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. After all, I am somewhat involved, plus it will be my final race for 2010. Hope to see you there.

A Little Different Way Of Attending Races This Past Week
My work schedule and other assorted commitments forced me into a different way of attending races this past week. So while I was able to get out to four different nights of racing this week, you only see a "write up" on one of them here on the Back Stretch.
On Wednesday night I made the trip over to the Peoria Speedway for the rescheduled Illinois State Championship race for the UMP Late Models and, since I had a meeting scheduled first thing in the morning on Thursday, I set my own curfew at 10:00 p.m. no matter where the program was at that point. This way I would be home by midnight at the latest. There was an interesting field of 43 Late Models in attendance including UMP national point leader Rusty Schlenk of Michigan, plus there were 30 Modifieds and just under 20 Hornets. Heat race action was good and the show was moving along in a decent fashion, so I thought that I had a pretty good chance at seeing the big 100-lap Late Model finale before my own curfew came up.
But after an intermission and some delays in the Modified and Hornet features the next thing I knew it was 9:40 and when Late Models started to pull onto the track with the drivers not buckled in and helmets on for an apparent on-track introduction process, I decided to hit the road a little earlier. When I spoke with retired racer Rollie Frink later in the weekend he asked me what I thought of that Late Model feature at Peoria and I told him my story of how I decided to leave early. Rollie then described to me what he called one of the best races that he had ever seen featuring a back-and-forth battle up front between Jason Feger and Jeep VanWormer as well as big charges from the back by three or four other drivers. Rollie then said that he thought that Ryan Unzicker might have been able to win it if the race hadn't ended under caution due to the track's curfew with about ten laps remaining and he too wondered why they would have run both support class features first given the curfew. As it was it was Jason Feger who was crowned as the 2010 Illinois State Champion with Ryan Unzicker second, Mike Provenzano third, Todd Bennett fourth and Jeep VanWormer fifth. Unzicker, Provenzano and Bennett all qualified out the two B-Mains, so all three started row seven or deeper. If you are looking for another show to attend this week, Peoria is back in action this Wednesday night the 6th as their World 100 for UMP Modifieds was again postponed by rain this past Saturday.
Thursday night my good friend and now ESPN celebrity Gary Crawford and I headed up to Knoxville for night one of the Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals and you will find my report on the evening in the entry below. Crawford, along with his wife Kathy and son Jordan has his five seconds of national exposure during the Iowa and Penn State telecast on ESPN Saturday night as they were shown longingly looking at the meat that Teri Walker was prepping on her grill. Was she really using Kingsford Gary?
Friday night was a high school football night for me as my father-in-law Bob Shores and the rest of his teammates from the undefeated 1960 squad were introduced prior to the New London Tiger homecoming game. After watching the first half there Chris and I headed back to Mt. Pleasant where the Panthers had a 6-0 lead on second-ranked Pella when we walked in midway through the third quarter. The first play that we saw was Pella's first touchdown and when we walked out a half hour later the final score was 21-6 Pella.
On Saturday night I headed down to Donnellson for the rescheduled Season Championship for the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders that had been pushed back from the previous week. With the rain date, several of the track's employees could not attend due to the fact that they had already purchased tickets for Knoxville, so I attempted to do Brian Neal's job as a fill in. I learned that Brian does quite a bit of work during the course of a race night at the Lee County Speedway so now I am even more impressed at the detailed reports that he compiles in Midwest Racing News at Positively Racing. The Sprint Invader feature saw Russ Hall race to an early lead only to have a slower car get sideways in front of him exiting turn two. With nowhere to go Hall made contact and the resulting damage ended his evening. Rager Phillips inherited the lead and looked like he would take the win until he started having some problems negotiating turn two. Series champion Kaley Gharst moved into challenge Phillips with five laps to go and when Rager slapped the guardrail in turn two that was all that Gharst needed to pull away for the season-ending victory while Phillips faded to fifth at the checkers.
With the beautiful weather on Sunday I made the trip down to the Quincy Raceway for what ended up as being their final event of the 2010 season. With the combo rules package that would allow the weekly IMCA Late Models, the UMP Crates and the ULMA Late Models to run together for $1,000 to win I was hoping to see several cars that I had only read about for the first time this season. And I did get my first look at Cliff Powell, Evan Fink and Trace Westling, but they were part of only an eleven-car field that saw Vance Wilson take the victory. Wilson has been running with the IMCA Late Models nearly every Sunday at Quincy while racing the ULMA shows in Missouri on Friday and Saturday where he looks like he will be the 2010 All Missouri Points Limited Late Model Champion. It was also the final day of national points for the UMP Modifieds and while there were rumors that several contenders might converge on Quincy just one, Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Indiana, made the tow. Jim Black of Bonne Terre, Missouri, won his first feature at Quincy while Gilpin finished ninth out of the ten starters. Terry Houston won the feature race that combined Stock Cars, southeast Iowa Hobby Stocks and Quincy Hobby Stocks while Beau Heavelow topped a nine-car field of Mini-Sprints. Obviously the track was disappointed with the low turnout, especially on such a perfect autumn day for racing, as they have cancelled the event that was previously scheduled for October 10th.
Looks like another nice week of weather coming up and there are still special events out there on the schedule, hopefully you can make it out to the track again soon!

Moyer Opens Big Weekend At Knoxville With A Win
As the night began announcer James Essex touted him as the winningest Late Model driver in the country with twenty-one victories on the season. Well we have a driver in the Quad Cities who has five more, okay make it four more wins than that this year now, but we get it, Billy Moyer’s twenty-two feature wins have all been on a big stage this year just like last night in Knoxville. Moyer, a Des Moines native, used just about every line around the hallowed half-mile Knoxville Raceway as he picked his way to the front to take the $7,000 victory on opening night of the Lucas Oil Late Model Nationals.
Sixty-one Late Models filled the pit area and the field was whittled down to twenty-four for the twenty-five-lap main event using Knoxville’s unique and fan friendly qualifying method of inverting ten cars in each of the five heat races. Even with the solid payout for the night’s efforts drivers were perhaps even more focused on the points that they accumulated through qualifying, the heat races and the C, B and A features as it would be those points that would determine where they would start in Saturday night’s big money finale paying forty grand to the winner.
Josh Richards and Tim McCreadie started on the front row of Thursday’s headliner with McCreadie rocketing out to a big advantage down the back straightaway on lap one. Richards came charging right back though and drove under McCreadie exiting turn four to take the lead on lap three. While most of the field ran the bottom line around the speedway, McCreadie started experimenting with a higher line and it worked as he closed in on Richards and behind them it was Billy Moyer who was jumping from line to line depending upon where his next victim was running as he was working his way up from a row six start. Throw in teenager Austin Hubbard and you had a very entertaining four-car battle at the front as McCreadie flew by Richards again on lap ten. As T-Mac and Mr. Smooth began to separate themselves from Richards and Hubbard it was now Scott Bloomquist who was on the move as he moved into the fourth position and it looked like we might have been setting up for a classic battle between arguably the sport’s two biggest names.
Moyer dispatched McCreadie on lap seventeen and pulled away though while Bloomquist seemed to level out and Moyer cruised the rest of the way for the win, his fifth career victory at Knoxville. McCreadie would settle for the runner-up honors while Bloomquist’s third-place run coupled with his performances earlier in the night will establish him as the high point man with 488 after night number one. Earl Pearson Jr. finished in the fourth spot while Brady Smith completed the top five.
Notes……It definitely seemed like an advantage to qualify early in the order as one of the first few cars out Jimmy Owens set quick time with the only lap in the 17-second bracket. However Bloomquist, as the 55th car to hit the track was second quick with a lap that was nearly half a second faster than any of the other drivers who qualified in the last half of the order…..Quick time was the only highlight of the night for Owens as he went nowhere in his heat race finishing ninth landing him in the C-Main where he ran second to the other driver who went nowhere in the first heat, Will Vaught. The two started on row eleven for the twenty-lap B-Main and while Vaught raced his way up to seventh at the checkers, Owens was credited with 18th…..Jeep VanWormer was a half a lap away from finishing third and transferring to the feature from the first heat race before he slowed going into turn three, yet he was still able to coast to the line to finish seventh putting both Owens and Vaught into the C-Main. Jeep was done for the night…..John VanDenBerg returned to the seat of a Late Model tonight driving the #18 car that Shannon Babb used to drive for Bill Moyer Sr. a few years back. VanDenBerg started from the pole of the second heat and held on to take the fourth and final transfer spot ahead of former event champion Brian Birkhofer……Birky would come back to win the B-Main and then would charge from 21st to eighth in the main event…..Darrell Lanigan suffered engine problems during his qualifying run, but as one of the first cars out he was still able to post a time that landed him in row two of the third heat race. He appeared to have things fixed as he was running away from the field only to have a caution wave with one lap remaining. Before the race would see the green again though Lanigan, the current World of Outlaws point leader, would pull to the pits handing the lead and the win over to Bub McCool who was enjoying his first visit to Knoxville…..Ryan Newman didn’t qualify well, missed the invert and started 11th in the third heat. But he was very impressive come race time as he charged up to fourth to make it to the feature event where he would later finish 17th…..At the start of the night I told my friend Gary Crawford to keep an eye on Kelly Boen as he is usually worth the price of admission. That statement was validated in heat race number four as Boen went to the outside to make it four-wide down the back stretch and when the squeeze was on he jumped the wheel of Chris Simpson sending the nose of Boen’s car skyward. It came back down on all fours though and, after a caution a couple of laps later for Simpson who had slowed on the speedway, Kelly was able to hold off Darren Miller for the fourth and final transfer spot…..Heat race number five saw the field bunch up in turn two on the opening lap leaving Jimmy Mars with no place to go and he spun sideways collecting Jill George. While the push truck worked to get George restarted, Mars went to the pit area for his crew to assess the damage. After being push started Jill turned down the track and jumped the berm on the inside of turn two. The resulting damage now required a hook and this gave Mars and his crew even more time to make sure that all was well on the #28. Jimmy returned to the track and restarted the race, but two laps later the left rear wheel and axle flew off his car and lodged into the track in turn four. Mars was unable to make repairs in time to start the C-Main so he will come back tonight (Friday) to try to get qualified……Moyer came from seventh to win the fifth heat..….Denny Eckrich fought off a late challenge from Dan Schlieper to take the fourth and final transfer out of the B-Main.
Thirty-seven IMCA Modifieds accepted invitations to race this weekend with Richie Gustin taking the win here on opening night. Outside of an early challenge from Ryan Ruter, Gustin was untouchable tonight as he stood in victory lane at Knoxville for the second time this season. Ruter came from eighth to finish second, Darrin Duffy who started next to Gustin on the front row finished third, Todd Shute flew up from row six to take fourth while Mark Schulte completed the top five.
With the twenty-one Modifieds who did not make the top sixteen in passing points out of the four heats being split into two B-mains, we would have liked to have seen one of those two being run prior to the Late Model C-Main rather than the twenty minute break that took place between that race and the final Late Model heat race. It was definitely a full night of action that concluded at 11:35 p.m. and they will wind ‘em all back up again tonight for night number two of qualifying at the 7th Annual Lucas Oil Knoxville Late Model Nationals.
