Lee County Speedway Welcomes Crate Late Models to Iowa

Lynn Richard started racing in 1979 when he earned the Rookie-of-the-Year honors in the Sportsman division at the West Liberty Raceway and outside of a six-year period where his employer made him choose between selling tractors or racing cars the Mount Pleasant, Iowa, resident has either driven or owned a car, or two, and once even three, ever since. At the conclusion of the 2015 season though, after reviewing the expenses that were involved with his IMCA Late Model team, Richard made the tough decision to call it quits.

"My motor bill alone last year was forty-one thousand dollars and as a weekly racing team we are out there running for five hundred or six hundred dollars to win," said Richard as I visited his race shop on Wednesday. "Under the current rules a motor is twenty grand minimum and thirty thousand for a good one. It just didn't make sense to me anymore."

Grudgingly preparing himself to walk away from the sport that he and his family had enjoyed so much over the years Richard took a phone call from the Lee County fair asking him if he would be interested in being an advisor to the race board. "I agreed on one condition, if they would bring Crate Late Models to the Lee County Speedway in 2016 and they said, sure, if you write the rules!"

Lynn and his wife Karen then made the trip out to Nebraska to talk with drivers and promoters at a few of the tracks in the eastern part of the state where the Late Model division ran a mix of rules that included an option for crate engines. It would be Lynn's opprtunity to not only learn more about the Crate Late Models, but also how to integrate it into the rules package that was already in the region. "I knew that we couldn't just go straight to Crate rules, we needed to have a transition period where drivers could use what they already had and I wanted to try to make the combination as equal as possible."

What he came up with is a set of rules that will allow the IMCA rules cars to race as well during the transition period, rules that Richard said if there is a competitive advantage one way or another that adjustments will be made and Lee County Speedway Promoter Mike Van Genderen emphasized that point even further. "We will change the rules at anytime to keep the playing field level. We want to make this work and it is important that there is not a perception that the Crates have an advantage over the IMCA cars, or vice versa."

For the IMCA legal cars they can come and race against the Crates by running a .950 restrictor plate that can be purchased from Performance Bodies for $97 and by running a 7,800 chip. They can leave everything else as is.

The rules for the Crate cars are written to keep costs down with the obvious headliner being the engine that can be purchased for around $6,000, but another big savings comes in the shocks where Richard said that his IMCA car took about $4,500 to equip. "I had these twin tube oil shocks in my drawer over there and they probably wouldn't have brought ten bucks a piece at an auction. With these rules they are going on my car instead and I will have about $200 invested in my shock package."

Re-energized from the new option, Richard quickly jumped back into the sport by purchasing Jeff Aikey's championship car from 2015, buying a crate engine from Shottenkirk and by purchasing an open trailer to make the 25-mile haul down to Donnellson where Jeff Guengerich will drive the car that I assume will once again carry Lynn's familiar #15. "All combined, I'm going Late Model racing for just $15,000!"

That new lower budget has other drivers and car owners in the region fired up as well. "We have cars in the area being pulled out of sheds and barns that otherwise would have sat idle this season," continued Richard. "We believe that we will have twelve to fifteen local drivers by mid-season and hopefully that number will continue to grow." Driver names that we discussed included Tommy Elston, Sam Halstead, Louis Lynch, Todd Frank, Derek Liles and of course Guengerich, while Van Genderen noted that he has fielded several calls from interested drivers from outside of the immediate area and from other promoters as well.

The southeast corner of the Hawkeye state has been without weekly Late Model racing since nearby 34 Raceway in Burlington dropped the division following the 2012 season and, given its location, Donnellson seems to be the perfect track to introduce Crate Late Models to Iowa. The nearest IMCA Late Model track is 75 miles to the north in West Liberty and the closest UMP Late Model track is about 60 miles south in Quincy, Illinois, and both of those tracks set the outer edge of coverage for those two respective sanctioning bodies. You have to drive three hours to the west before you find weekly Late Model racing in Corning while it would be a two hour trip to the east where the Super Late Models run weekly in Peoria and the Pro Late Models, UMP's own Crate division race weekly at the Spoon River Speedway.

The division will make its debut next weekend, March 25th and 26th during the annual Spring Extravaganza at the Lee County Speedway with a full show both nights paying $1,000-to-win. Both the promoter Van Genderen and the advisor Richard noted that they have had drivers from Nebraska and Kansas who said that they plan to make the trip to Donnellson for the two-day show to show their support knowing what it has meant for their own Late Model programs. The Crate Late Models will then race weekly at Donnellson on Friday nights paying $500-to-win and $100-to-start, plus the division will run in support of the track's May 5th MLRA Late Model show with another $1,000 winner's check up for grabs. Then, on the first two days of August, the "Lee County Late Models" will take center stage for a $1,000-to-win special event. No wonder the division is drawing interest from around the region!

The class will also make appearances at 34 Raceway, the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri, and during the fair races at the Bloomfield Speedway. Van Genderen also wanted to emphasize that all events this year, including the weekly shows at Donnellson, will be run under a draw/redraw format to give drivers the opportunity to drop in and tryout the rules package without having to start at the rear......unless of course that is where they draw.

"I have been checking the weather and hoping that it will be good for next weekend," said Richard. "We could have four cars or there could be more than twenty, you just never know. I'm apprehensive, but I am so excited to have Late Models back at the Lee County Speedway."

Race fans in the area are excited as well.

Monday Notebook: March 14, 2016

I spent this past weekend in Oklahoma celebrating my son's birthday in Oklahoma City and visiting family in Tulsa. Since I was not planning on hitting the ASCS National Series opener at Creek County Speedway near Tulsa anyway it did not bother me when the event was cancelled earlier in the week. However when Saturday was bright and sunny with temps in the high 60's I wondered if there were any regrets with the decision.

I was, or better said am planning on going racing this coming weekend although one of my main options fell by the wayside this morning when the two-day event at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri, was cancelled due to wet conditions and a cold forecast for the weekend. The wet conditions I can understand as it was easy to see the standing water in the fields as we drove through northeast Missouri on our way back home from Oklahoma on Sunday and there is more rain predicted for today and tomorrow. The normal high for Memphis MO for this coming weekend is 52 with a normal low of 30, so even a slightly below normal forecast of 48 and 32 is "cold" plus the weather folks are discussing rain/snow possibilities for Friday night into Saturday. Oh well, hopefully things will stay good for this coming Sunday March 20th when the USMTS Modifieds visit the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Missouri, and that will be my northern opener for 2016.

There are other options still for Friday and Saturday that you can find on the Specials Calendar at Positively Racing, but once Chrissy found out that Memphis was off the table, BAM, I had other plans. :)

Congratulations to our good friend Gary Lee of Kirksville, Missouri, who ranked fourth among the ticket buyers in Ron Hedger's annual Super Fan contest. Gary attended 128 races at 48 different tracks in nine states in 2015 and offers up some great commentary and stats within the article. I have asked Gary on a couple of occasions if he would like to write for Positively Racing, but each time he politely turns me down. He does however send to us many, many pictures that he takes in the pits before the races and we feature those on our Positively Racing Facebook page so make sure that you take a look at Gary's albums. And, while you're there, give the page a "like" as it is our way to not only give you several photo albums to look through, but it is also our way to notify you when there is new content up on any of the blogs. As of this writing we only need two more people to follow to eclipse the 2,000 mark!

Three more gentlemen who we always enjoy sitting with in the stands and hearing about their travels finished just outside of Hedger's top five in Bob Litton, Kevin Babcock and Jack Miles III. You can keep up with Kevin's current travels on his Chasin' Racin Facebook page and for some history and several great old pictures visit his Chasin' Racin website.

How about those car counts out at the IMCA Spring Nationals in Beatrice, Nebraska, this past weekend?? 302 cars in four classes on Friday night and then on Saturday night with the Sport Compacts joining the card the total count soared to 347! The headline class, the Modifieds topped the charts with an amazing 118 cars on Friday and 113 on Saturday. Then to make things even better, the Modified feature on Saturday night was a thriller throughout topped off by a finish that brought the entire crowd to its feet. A photo of the finish along with the feature results can be found in this article and if you want to watch the entire feature race on video click here. Our own Ed Reichert was in Beatrice for the weekend and even though his report from there is not yet up on One Fan's Travels as of this writing, it should be soon.

The big news in Dirt Late Model racing this past weekend was an incident that happened in the infield following a Friday night heat race at the Smokey Mountain Raceway in Tennessee when, after a heated battle on the track between Scott Bloomquist and Chris Madden, one of Bloomquist's crewmen rode a mini bike in between the two of them as they made their way to the scales. As Bloomquist turned to go onto the scales, Madden continued to drive straight dumping the crewman and the mini bike. Race promoter Ray Cook reviewed video of the incident, determined that it was intentional and then disqualified Madden for Saturday's $15,000-to-win main event. Bloomquist came back the following night to edge out Randy Weaver for the big payday while Madden recovered nicely by capturing a $5,000-to-win main event at the Dixie Speedway just north of Atlanta on Saturday. The incident is getting plenty of discussion on the forums especially since Madden used to drive a Bloomquist chassis and was essentially a teammate for several years.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Cars were rained out on Friday night at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California, but coming back on Saturday it was David Gravel scoring his first win in the CJB Motorsports car #5. The bigger story though was the fact that Donny Schatz did not qualify for the main event after struggling in his heat and finishing sixth in the B-Main, plus with new rules for the series provisionals stating that a driver cannot improve his points standing position when using a provisional, Schatz turned down that opportunity. It was the first World of Outlaws Sprint Car A-Main that Schatz has missed since November of 2012. Brad Sweet continues to lead the early season points standings for the Outlaws while Schatz, even with the DNQ, still sits in fifth.

Earlier in today's notebook I referred you to the Schedule page and you will note that we always have the disclaimer at the top that encourages you to always check with the track prior to making a trip. Obviously a mistake on our part is always a concern, but this is mostly due to the fact that tracks and series will often make changes in their schedule after they are first announced with little or no notice and since I don't go searching those schedules once again after they are initially released, those changes often go unnoticed. Thankfully today on DirtDrivers.com I noticed that the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer had released their schedule.......again......as I first saw a schedule for the track back in early December. Today's revision had several changes that will be in the next update, but let's just say that the differences between the first "draft" and the final were significant!

One of the tracks that we were still waiting on a 2016 schedule for came out with a surprise announcement on Friday that the gates at the Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, Indiana, will remain closed. In the story you will see that the owner cites negative comments on social media as one of the reasons for the track closing and that will likely just rile up the masses once again who will say that negative posters were only trying to point out things that needed to be improved upon at the speedway, not shut it down completely. You will see it described as a "cop out" for the promoter to blame negative social media and while that might be true in a sense, isn't it the ultimate "screw you" response by the promoter to close down the track and place the blame at the keyboards of those he felt brought him down? I know one thing, the Illiana Speedway did itself no favors in regard to promoting the track on its website or in social media as it was the only facility in the upper Midwest that I could not get race results from in 2015. Guess I won't have to go looking this year.

Here's an interesting concept. The Flint Creek Speedway in Colcord, Oklahoma, appears to only be running Test and Tune sessions this year at $20 per pit pass. No races, just practice. The ultimate "back gate promotion".

Our condolences to the family of Grant Junghans.

Monday Notebook: March 7, 2016

On this day fifty-three years ago a race fan was born.

Well actually it was when his parents and grandparents started taking him to the races regularly when he was four years old that this race fan was "born". Give "birth" to some new race fans this season by taking your son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter to the races . And, if you already do so, have them bring a friend along sometime and introduce the sport to somebody who may not otherwise even think of going to the races. We need to get the younger generation hooked, I don't want to be in the stands and still be under the average age of the fans in attendance!

If you were looking for a lead change during in any of the Dirt Late Model regional series action that took place east of the Rockies this past weekend you were the proverbial SOL. Dennis Erb Jr. and Tony Jackson Jr. each went flag-to-flag to win feature races during the MARS sanctioned Tuckasee Toilet Bowl Classic at the Clarksville Speedway. Chris Madden was never headed on either Saturday or Sunday as he swept the Southern All Stars March Madness weekend at Cherokee Speedway and John Ownbey went the distance for the Ultimate Series opener at North Georgia Speedway. Add in a $3,000-to-win non-sanctioned blowout by Kyle Bronson at the new All Tech Raceway in north Florida and you had six Late Model shows that failed to produce even one lead change. This continues a trend that was noted in last week's notebook and hopefully it is not something that will continue as the 2016 season spreads northward.

Can't say the same about the USMTS Modifieds and their tripleheader weekend at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway. On Thursday night Ryan Gustin started fifth and became the third leader of the night on lap 19 enroute to the victory. Friday night Rodney Sanders charged up from the seventh starting spot to take the lead from Lance Town on lap two, gave up the lead to Stormy Scott for a lap with nine to go only to come back and take the $3,000 win. Then on Saturday Sanders swapped the lead with Kyle Strickler twice before winning the $4,000 finale. Our Positively Racing colleague Ed Reichert made the trip to Ardmore and you can read his thoughts at One Fan's Travels.

I like watching lead changes and that is why I have the USMTS event at I-35 Speedway in Winston, Missouri, circled on my calendar for Sunday March 20th.

With Sprint Cup rookie-of-the-year candidate Ryan Blaney having a great run in Las Vegas yesterday it made me wonder what happened to last year's top rookie, Iowa's own Brett Moffitt. Hard to believe that the young man has nothing going on at this time even at one of the lower levels of NASCAR.

March Madness basketball had most of my attention this weekend with Wes Washpun's buzzer beater to send the Northern Iowa Panthers to the NCAA tourney the biggest thrill. I also found myself intrigued by all five state championship games for the Iowa high school girls, especially the 3A tilt that featured Elle Ruffridge of Pocahontas Area. The five foot four inch dynamo averaged 28 points a game this season and led her team to this year's state championship by beating Nevada in a rematch of last year's title game. I have been known to make a road trip to watch a talented young player in person and I will have to check the Indians' schedule for next season as Ruffridge seeks to become the state's all-time leading scorer.

If you are a dirt late model fan and do not yet subscribe to Dirt On Dirt you should, especially with the addition of their new live studio show Late Model Live featuring Michael Rigsby. The show premiered on March 1st and if you can't catch it live you can always watch it from the video archives. Rigsby said that he would like the show to be something along the lines of a Dan Patrick show for Late Model fans and he definitely kept my interest in the opener. One of the things that I loved hearing from him was in regard to that ever mentioned "next level" that so many people have promised to take the sport of dirt racing to over the past couple of decades. Rigsby said that perhaps we have achieved that "next level" with dirt late model racing and that the coverage that the sport now has from sources like MavTV, LucasOilRacing.tv, CBS Sports Network, Dirt On Dirt and others is very good for a sport that, after all, is still very much a niche. The next edition of Late Model Live is on March 15th.

Back in January I updated my list of tracks that I have attended and through a forum post this week about tracks that have closed over the years I realized that I had left one off of my original list. JAX Raceway near Jacksonville, Florida, was described at the time as an "oiled dirt" surface and it definitely raced more like a pavement track than a dirt track. My old Speed Weeks crew of John & Scott Vantiger and Philip Carter attended a couple of shows there with me one year and I remember that trip more about the fact that wrestlers from the WWF were staying at our hotel than the racing. Needless to say the racing was nothing to shout about and the track has been gone now for quite some time.

Late Model fans will recall the black car #23 with the word "COAL" across the nose driven for several years by John Blankenship of Williamson, West Virginia. Blankenship's father Don was featured in a segment on last night's of episode of 60 Minutes on CBS in regard to his December 3rd conviction of conspiracy to willfully violate safety standards in the aftermath of a coal mine explosion that killed 29 miners.

After Webmistress Sue uploads this week's update the only weekly All Iowa Points track that has not yet put out their schedule will be the Frontier Sports Park in Fort Dodge, although they did indicate that they should be releasing the schedule soon. The Sioux Speedway in Sioux Rapids, a track that only runs a few times each year, is the other track in Iowa that I am still checking on. For a full rundown of events in our coverage area make sure that you visit the Calendar page at Positively Racing.

The first face off in the battle for supremacy in the world of 360 Sprint Car racing is scheduled for this coming weekend as the NSL sanctions the rescheduled Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock while the ASCS National Series is scheduled about four and a half hours away at the Creek County Speedway just west of Tulsa. Unfortunately however both are facing a dire weather forecast with projections of between eight to twelve inches of rain in Little Rock this week. The Short Track Nationals had the some scenario last October and announced changes in the schedule a day or two in advance eventually leading to this March date, so with this new competition for cars and drivers it will be interesting to see if they handle things in the same manner this week. The rainfall amounts in Oklahoma are not supposed to be as heavy, but the current forecast does call for rain on both Friday and Saturday. (Follow up: Just hours after this blog was published the Short Track Nationals were cancelled based upon the weather forecast for the rest of the week. A good call and one that shows that I-30 was thinking of their drivers and fans only. The rain threat is not as pronounced for Creek County with chances , as of now, dropping off after Saturday morning so perhaps the ASCS can at least get one night of racing in. Perhaps the best chance of seeing racing this weekend is in Beatrice, Nebraska, for the IMCA Spring Nationals)
