Other than several more tracks releasing their race schedules for 2017 this was a pretty slow week for racing news, at least that was of interest to me, so today's Notebook will be short and sweet.
The biggest news actually came last Saturday morning when former driver and prospective promoter Al Purkey announced suddenly that the planned reopening of the Mid America Speedway in South Coffeyville, Kansas, would not happen as planned in 2017. The track had two big $10,000-to-win weekends on the MLRA schedule, plus had scheduled a big money Modified show to open the season in March, but apparently the new track owner John Fiore pulled the plug last Friday stating that the facility would not be ready to present racing in 2017. Okay, so that made some sense since this track has been sitting idle for several years now, but another track that was recently purchased by Fiore, the Outlaw Motor Speedway near Muskogee was also deemed to be in no shape to hold racing in 2017 and will be dark this season. The difference is that Outlaw is not very old and raced weekly in 2016 leaving many to wonder what the actual story might be. Fiore has stated that he intends to open them both again in 2018, but well I guess that remains to be seen.
I must admit that I was a bit surprised when it was announced that the Gateway Dirt Nationals will return to the Dome at the America's Center in St. Louis in December. Some of the comments that had been made by the promoter in recent weeks seemed to be setting us up for a soft landing, but instead it is good news that perhaps the most unique event in Dirt Late Model racing will have an encore. Some key changes have been made to the event with only one round of qualifying instead of two. The Modified field will be capped at 100 cars and half of those will essentially be an Invitational in that you will have to earn your way into the event through designated races throughout the season or by a fan vote while the other half will be "first come, first serve" in regard to paying an entry fee. Even though there were fewer than 100 Late Models at the inaugural event, the Late Model entry list will be capped at 150 and this time around instead of just saying what the features will pay to win, they are also stating what it will pay to start in 2017.
Sprint Car fans along the Mississippi River area will be torn on June 9th and 10th as the World of Outlaws will be at Knoxville at the same time that the All Star Circuit of Champions will be battling on the bullrings of Lincoln and Macon, Illinois. On Sunday the 11th though all of the fans can converge on 34 Raceway near Burlington where the All Stars will close out their three-day weekend.
Tanner Thorson who was the 2016 Midget Driver of the Year will take the same steps as did Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell and Rico Abreu recently and give pavement Late Model racing a try to see if he can earn his way into NASCAR.
Florida and Georgia Speedweeks officially kicked off last night as the Nesmith Crate Late Models raced at the Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala where Brandon Sheppard set quick time in group one, started from the pole (they don't run heats) in the feature and led every lap to take the win. It's bad enough when you qualify and start the fast guys up front in any division, but in a Crate Late Model it is even worse........in my humble opinion.
Getting closer and closer to the 2017 racing season here in the Midwest and the Specials Calendar continues to grow as tracks and series release their schedules. Still waiting on one from the Deery Brothers Summer Series!
Enjoy your weekend!

Thursday Notebook: January 19, 2017
The weather guy said this morning that today was the mid-point of winter, at least when you look at the average temperatures because beginning tomorrow the average high starts to go up. That means that we are getting closer to racing season!
I felt bad after posting last week's notebook when I didn't even mention the change of ownership at the Farley Speedway. Obviously Simmons Promotions needed an injection of cash and it is good that three gentlemen who have been involved in racing for a several years now made the investment. The big $50,000-to-win Modified show will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out, who all will show up and what surprises may be in the field. I will go out on a limb and predict that a Modified regular, not a Late Model or Sprint Car invader, will win the big money, but in the Sport Mods the winner will be someone who does not compete weekly in the division. One suggestion guys, you will have five times as many Sport Mod entrants if you set a restriction on who can compete, you know such as somebody who actually races them before and after that weekend. Just a thought....
R.C. Whitwell got off to a slow start with Gressel Racing by not even making the show last October at Lakeside and really didn't make up any ground after that so he was given the hook after the Wild West Shootout. The driver who many thought should have been hired in the first place for the team that runs both Modifieds and Late Models, Ricky Thornton Jr. now takes the wheel and we will soon find out if he can live up to the standards previously set by Ryan Gustin.
Call them the Keyser Konspiracy Theorists. With the rainout of the final two events at the Wild West Shootout many people act like it was a ploy to keep Bobby Pierce from collecting a $50,000 bonus from Keyser Manufacturing if he had won one more, or a $100,000 spiff if he had won them both. However, what these idiots (yes, if that was your conclusion from this series of events, I am positively calling you an idiot) don't understand is that Keyser has already paid an insurance premium that was an agreed upon amount before any of the series races took place. One payment, one cost, win or lose. They would have WANTED Pierce to win the bonus, and the bigger the better, because it would have just made their sponsorship even more effective through the name recognition. Hopefully, with the morons spouting off, they are not now seeing the opposite effect.
If you still have a doubt in your mind though, or if you just want a good report on the Arizona events, make sure to read the three most recent entries of One Fan's Travels by Ed Reichert.
The wet weather in the southwest has also washed out this weekend's events in New Mexico. Konspiracy!!
Being delayed one week by an unusual southern snowstorm sure didn't diminish the annual running of the Ice Bowl this past weekend at the Talladega Short Track with 334 cars and drivers participating in the three day show. Michael Page was the fastest qualifier in his group, started the first heat race from the pole and won it to earn the pole position for the main event, then led all fifty laps to collect the $6,000 top prize. If ever an event needed to use a passing points system with no qualifying it is this one and I would bet that they would be amazed at how many grooves "The Hornet's Nest" would have to offer if the fast guys had to get off the bottom to actually pass somebody during the heats. The track was so one-laned that one of the announcers said "he's brave, he's trying the high groove" when a driver actually challenged for a position in the top five. Here's the thing though, there were 334 cars in the pits and the grandstands looked pretty full on the video, so if it ain't broke.......
Foolishly I thought that we might get through an entire winter without somebody writing a missive about how Social Media is killing racing, but then yesterday I was alerted to this on the Springport Mid-Michigan Speedway website. For the past couple of years writings with this type of title have then been largely skewered mainly by people on social media who are more likely to make blanket statements that are loosely based on fact and think that, in some way, their rants are actually going to help, but this one is much different. First it includes a question mark in the title and then proceeds to provide an actual explanation of why negative social media is damaging to the sport, something that many of us have realized for years. The track then explains how it will use social media to its advantage and even gives examples of situations that it will not discuss on social media. Even the bashers will have a hard time attacking this one. We did however make it halfway through the winter....
The Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City is looking for a new track manager after Jason Van Sickle decided to focus his efforts on the track in Fort Dodge in 2017.
The infamous "raceaholic" has (once again) stated that he will no longer post on the Iowastockcars.com forum. The count down is now on until his next post. He and calverton from 4m.net should have coffee together sometime.

Thursday Notebook: January 12, 2017
I have spent the past three days on the road for business, something that will be more of a theme in 2017, and there has been quite of bit of interesting news over the past eight days!
I had a great time helping out with the emcee duties at the 34 Raceway banquet in Burlington this past Saturday night. It has been twenty-eight years since I was last on the microphone for the track's banquet, my final year of announcing full-time at the speedway, and I forgot just how much fun it is to gather together with racing friends from multiple divisions during the middle of winter to celebrate the past and to look forward to the future. Even in this day and age of bashing and pot stirring on social media, it was obvious just how close knit the "racing family" at 34 Raceway is and you couldn't help but to be excited for the season ahead as Amy Laue hinted at some of the special events that will take place. I have to thank the Laues, the Parishes and the Bowlings for allowing me to once again be a part of that family.
I have often said that 34 Raceway offers one of the most diverse schedules in dirt track racing and, with today's release of that 2017 schedule, the track proves me right once again. They surprised me right off the bat with the return of the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models on Saturday April 1st. This was the original home of the Summer Series and after being out for the past few seasons it will be great to have the IMCA Late Models back for what I would assume to be the series opener for 2017. Plus, to make it a can't miss doubleheader, the only other division in action that night will be the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invader 360 Winged Sprint Cars.
The Wisconsin based IRA Sprint Cars will pull into 34 Raceway the following week, April 8th, with the Ninth Annual Slocum 50 for the Open Late Models set for April 15th. The event run in memory of Brent Slocum has grown to be one of the most anticipated in dirt late model racing here in the upper Midwest and with $10,555 going to the winner you can once again expect a stellar field to compete. Three more events for the Sprint Invaders also dot the schedule at the "home track" for the regional series and Sprint Car fans have to also be excited to see the first appearance here for Tony Stewart's Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions on Sunday June 11th. This comes just one night after the World of Outlaws run a two-night show at the Knoxville Raceway and, while series rules will likely keep the Outlaw regulars from coming to 34, you can bet that the weekend tripleheader will pull in some of the region's best to compete with the All Star regulars.
You can bet that I will be at 34 Raceway early, and often throughout the 2017 season.
Just like most of the racing world I was shocked by the announcement that Carl Edwards will be retiring from racing effective immediately. He came from dirt track racing roots here in the Midwest so I have always been a fan and you have to respect his reasons for stepping away. My selfish hope is that he might help out those grass root racers near his hometown by getting involved in the ownership or promotion of a dirt track near his Columbia, Missouri, home. While at the banquet Saturday night I was told that there were rumors that the Lake Ozark Speedway might come back to life. It would likely take someone like Carl Edwards to make it successful.
My point of view is admittedly jaded because I cannot stand the format of Group Qualifying and then start the fast guys in front, but I think even an objective race fan would have to agree that, overall, the racing has not been as good at the first three nights of the Wild West Shootout. Yes, there have been a couple of exciting heat races and the features have had some times of action, but when using the passing points system the racing was much better. The "big name" drivers bitched about it though, so the promoters made the change and guess what? Those drivers didn't come to the desert this year anyway!
With Bobby Pierce winning the first two nights from the front row (both his heats and the feature) he looked like a sure bet to collect at least some level of the Keyser Manufacturing bonus where a driver who wins all six events will collect $250,000, five wins gets an extra $100,000 while four wins still nets a hefty $50,000. Bonuses like this are often setup through something that is referred to as a "hole in one" insurance policy where the promoter, or in this case perhaps the sponsor itself, pays a premium upfront that is based upon the odds of someone actually earning the bonus. I have to wonder if the insurance provider was told that the lineup format had been changed this year from passing points to starting the fast guys in front as that would exponentially increase the chances of someone winning four or more races, thus increasing the amount of the premium that would be paid to purchase the policy. Insurance companies really frown against the chances of a payout going up without being told.
Billy Moyer, yes the same old guy that keeps saying that he is retiring, became the insurance companies new best friend last night when he won the main event eliminating the possibility of a quarter of a million dollar payout. Pierce apparently qualified poorly as he started his heat race from sixth, but still raced his way up to second. Too bad Bobby, that performance would have likely started you on the front row of the feature in a passing points system. The series concludes this weekend with races on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The first two nights of the Chili Bowl have offered up some new faces as the top three finishers each night lock themselves into Saturday's main event. To me at least, the last couple of years at the Chili Bowl have been a bit too predictable as to who would make Saturday's finale even with more than 350 drivers in action, but through the first two nights that is definitely not the case this year. Tyler Courtney took the win on Tuesday night surviving a charge from Kyle Larson where in true "wreckers or checkers" style, the now NASCAR regular got upside down while battling with Courtney for the lead. Larry Wight, a big block Modified driver from New York finished in the second spot while former POWRi Midget champion Zach Daum was third.
The trio of qualifiers from last night are even more of a surprise especially considering that the Wednesday night roster included multi-time champions Sammy Swindell and Rico Abreu. The Californians swept the top three as Travis Berryhill scored the win, Jake Swanson who started the race from 18th was second and Colby Copeland took third. Swindell had to race from the C to the B and on to the A-Main where he started 24th and finished seventh and Abreu was involved in incidents in both his heat and his C-Main putting him in a position where he will have to hustle on Saturday just to make the show. That is of course if they don't give a provisional to the defending champion. It will be interesting to see if this trend of new faces continues through the weekend.
Speaking of Abreu it would appear that his short venture into the world of NASCAR may be over as his truck team was not able to secure sponsorship for 2017. I must admit that this surprised me a bit because I thought that his performance was good enough to support his unique marketing possibilities although I do still think that he is more suited to be a dirt track hero rather than a NASCAR regular. Steve Kinser had a legendary career in Sprint Cars and a failed attempt at NASCAR. Donny Schatz continues to build upon his legacy with apparently no thought of moving to the so-called "big time". With his star power and his mash the gas mentality, Abreu could just be that next open wheel star so rather than looking at this as a setback he should instead take it as a confirmation of where he best fits the sport. I for one can't wait to see him on dirt more often in 2017.
For the first time in 27 years the annual Ice Bowl at the Talladega Short Track had to be postponed a week due to weather. Believe me, I know from experience that they have overcome challenges from Mother Nature before, but have somehow always prevailed, but last week's winter storm in the southeast was just too much. And of course, in true AWP fashion, there are idiots out there who are taking the track to task for not cancelling earlier in the week. When you are 27 for 27 you don't necessarily believe a forecast that is five days out, so here's hoping that "Preacher" and the crew at TST have some great weather this weekend and fill the pits to the max.
One thing that you have to say for Cody Sommer is that he doesn't cherry pick easy projects. The promoter of the recent Gateway Nationals at the dome in St. Louis has now announced that he will be putting dirt on the Mansfield Speedway in Ohio and running several special events there in 2017. Of course the question for many of you readers would be "what about another Gateway Nationals next December?" Well, even though there was a story discussing the possibilities with Sommer on Dirt On Dirt this week where the promoter stated that "the odds are strongly in favor" of a return engagement, he is not yet able to confirm that it will happen, but hopes to within the coming weeks. The majority of the fans who attended, and those who likely made a nice chunk of change along with the event, all say that it was amazing and they hope that it will return. But if what has been reported in regard to the purse structure is actually true, where non-qualifiers received nothing, that will surely drop the car count for the encore. Guess we will see what happens in a couple of weeks.
The Flint Creek Speedway in Colcord, Oklahoma, will return to action in 2017 after only staging practice nights in 2016. The Wagner Speedway has scheduled a drivers meeting to discuss the possibilities of a 2017 season at the South Dakota track that sat idle all of last season. And, as previously reported in Ed Reichert's "One Fan's Travels" the track in Sturgeon Hill, Wisconsin, is bouncing back to action in 2017. On the internet forums you will often see a thread titled "Another Race Track Closes" making it seem like they are dinosaurs headed toward eventual extinction. I should start actually keeping track because it seems to me that the net total, openings compared to closings, is on the plus side so far in this offseason, at least in our section of the United States.
They say that it will have no effect on the title sponsorship, but the sale of the Craftsman brand has to be a concern to the World of Outlaws. It figures, the Outlaws finally get a national brand to support them and then this.
NeSmith Crate Late Model sanctioned racing will be held at two tracks in Nebraska for the first time in 2017 as both the Junction Motor Speedway and the Lexington Speedway have signed on. The Salina Speedway in Kansas was the first in the Midwest to join the NeSmith ranks last year.
The Back Stretch National Dirt Late Model Points chase is underway with The Hangover from 411 Speedway in Tennessee and three nights of the Wild West Shootout in the books. You can enjoy plenty of racing this weekend on a pay-per-view basis!

Wednesday Notebook: January 4, 2017
Happy New Year!
I have been overwhelmed with the page views that I have had for the Cumulative All Iowa Points over the past nine days! Over 32,000 and counting thanks to many of you who have commented and shared the posts from our Facebook page. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all of the positive comments and I do hope that your interest in the All Iowa Points will carry into the 2017 season where you can follow the weekly updates on the Points Page at Positively Racing. We do these points for the fun of it, but to know that drivers have used them to enhance their sponsorship search and that AIP championships were included on the resumes for several National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame members makes it all worth it!
I mentioned the many positive comments received, but one young lady claimed that the Four Cylinder points were inaccurate even though she did not understand how the points worked and I had a Sport Mod driver who wanted me to go back in my records and confirm that I had actually included all of the races that he had finished in the top five in. Apparently he was not satisfied that he was so far down the list. I did have one interesting request though that I will honor now though as Nathan Wood asked to see what the Stock Car standings would look like if only using the past five seasons. So, listed below, its just for you #52....
The pace of the racing news slowed down a bit over the Holidays, but should pick up once again especially as we swing back into action this weekend with the annual Ice Bowl in Alabama and The Wild West Shootout in Arizona. Following are some tidbits that I have picked up while assembling the Events calendars for 2017.
This was actually announced in late September, but after twenty years of operating the Dallas County Speedway in Urbana, Missouri, Bill Allen has retired and the track, which most recently raced on Friday nights, will run no more. Questions as to whether or not he might sell the place or lease it to someone have gone unanswered on the track's Facebook page. With this I would not be surprised to see the nearby Lebanon Midway Speedway move back to Friday nights after having run on Sundays throughout most of 2016. No mention of this yet from Midway, but I did notice that on today's update of the MARS West schedule there have been two Friday night dates added for the track.
In this "information now" society that we live in I have noticed that both racing series and tracks seem to be putting out their race schedules earlier than ever before That's great if you actually have things locked in and you are going to pretty much stick with it, but that is not the case for some. For example, that MARS West update today ten changes to it......and we are still in the first week of January! That's why you always have to consider the disclaimer at the top of our schedule page, because if a track or a series makes a change after posting an original schedule, and does not make some sort of notification about the change, it will likely be missed on this end.
Take your time, get your schedule set, and then release it.
One schedule that sparked my interest was that of the CJ Speedway that is just up the road from me in Columbus Junction. Even though I am a short drive away I have not been there much over the past several years, but with a Tuesday night special each month in May, June, July and August that will change. The first one comes on Tuesday May 16th and will feature the Sport Compacts racing for $500-to-win.
Now I am looking forward to see the release of the 2017 schedule at 34 Raceway in Burlington. Promoters Jeff & Amy Laue put up a teaser on the track's Facebook page showing the logos of the series and special events that will be coming to town this year and it included the IRA Sprints, the Arctic Cat All Star Sprints and a return of the Deery Brothers Summer Series. Of course we already know that the annual Slocum 50 will be on Saturday April 15th and that the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders will make four apperances on April 1st, May 28th, August 19th and September 23rd. I am looking forward to helping Amy out with the track's banquet this coming Saturday night.
Plenty of rumors floating around about the status of the Badlands Speedway, but until something is officially announced I'm not believing any of it. I do notice that the World of Outlaws still have the July doubleheader there on their schedule though. The Park Jefferson Speedway near Sioux City announced that they will add the 360 Sprints to their weekly Saturday night program in 2017 in an effort to "fill the gap" left behind by the sudden closure.
Rodney Sanders announced last week that he will run the full Lucas Oil MLRA Late Model schedule in 2017 while still hitting some of the big Modified shows when the series is not scheduled.
The talent level of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series ticked up a notch when Chris Madden stated his intentions to follow the full schedule. Madden has rarely left the southeast in the past so it will be interesting to see how he does on the different dirt surfaces that he will encounter outside of that region.
Back to schedule gathering and, if you don't see yours or your favorite track's or series' on there yet, don't panic, I am sending updates to the Webmistress once a week. Thanks for dropping in on the Back Stretch!
