I have been overwhelmed with the page views that I have had for the Cumulative All Iowa Points over the past nine days! Over 32,000 and counting thanks to many of you who have commented and shared the posts from our Facebook page. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all of the positive comments and I do hope that your interest in the All Iowa Points will carry into the 2017 season where you can follow the weekly updates on the Points Page at Positively Racing. We do these points for the fun of it, but to know that drivers have used them to enhance their sponsorship search and that AIP championships were included on the resumes for several National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame members makes it all worth it!
I mentioned the many positive comments received, but one young lady claimed that the Four Cylinder points were inaccurate even though she did not understand how the points worked and I had a Sport Mod driver who wanted me to go back in my records and confirm that I had actually included all of the races that he had finished in the top five in. Apparently he was not satisfied that he was so far down the list. I did have one interesting request though that I will honor now though as Nathan Wood asked to see what the Stock Car standings would look like if only using the past five seasons. The pace of the racing news slowed down a bit over the Holidays, but should pick up once again especially as we swing back into action this weekend with the annual Ice Bowl in Alabama and The Wild West Shootout in Arizona. Following are some tidbits that I have picked up while assembling the Events calendars for 2017.
This was actually announced in late September, but after twenty years of operating the Dallas County Speedway in Urbana, Missouri, Bill Allen has retired and the track, which most recently raced on Friday nights, will run no more. Questions as to whether or not he might sell the place or lease it to someone have gone unanswered on the track's Facebook page. With this I would not be surprised to see the nearby Lebanon Midway Speedway move back to Friday nights after having run on Sundays throughout most of 2016. No mention of this yet from Midway, but I did notice that on today's update of the MARS West schedule there have been two Friday night dates added for the track.
In this "information now" society that we live in I have noticed that both racing series and tracks seem to be putting out their race schedules earlier than ever before That's great if you actually have things locked in and you are going to pretty much stick with it, but that is not the case for some. For example, that MARS West update today ten changes to it......and we are still in the first week of January! That's why you always have to consider the disclaimer at the top of our schedule page, because if a track or a series makes a change after posting an original schedule, and does not make some sort of notification about the change, it will likely be missed on this end.
Take your time, get your schedule set, and then release it.
One schedule that sparked my interest was that of the CJ Speedway that is just up the road from me in Columbus Junction. Even though I am a short drive away I have not been there much over the past several years, but with a Tuesday night special each month in May, June, July and August that will change. The first one comes on Tuesday May 16th and will feature the Sport Compacts racing for $500-to-win.
Now I am looking forward to see the release of the 2017 schedule at 34 Raceway in Burlington. Promoters Jeff & Amy Laue put up a teaser on the track's Facebook page showing the logos of the series and special events that will be coming to town this year and it included the IRA Sprints, the Arctic Cat All Star Sprints and a return of the Deery Brothers Summer Series. Of course we already know that the annual Slocum 50 will be on Saturday April 15th and that the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders will make four apperances on April 1st, May 28th, August 19th and September 23rd. I am looking forward to helping Amy out with the track's banquet this coming Saturday night.
Plenty of rumors floating around about the status of the Badlands Speedway, but until something is officially announced I'm not believing any of it. I do notice that the World of Outlaws still have the July doubleheader there on their schedule though. The Park Jefferson Speedway near Sioux City announced that they will add the 360 Sprints to their weekly Saturday night program in 2017 in an effort to "fill the gap" left behind by the sudden closure.
Rodney Sanders announced last week that he will run the full Lucas Oil MLRA Late Model schedule in 2017 while still hitting some of the big Modified shows when the series is not scheduled.
The talent level of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series ticked up a notch when Chris Madden stated his intentions to follow the full schedule. Madden has rarely left the southeast in the past so it will be interesting to see how he does on the different dirt surfaces that he will encounter outside of that region.
