Just Had To Share This.....

Hi there! Hope you are enjoying the Holidays and that Santa was kind to you.

While perusing the websites to compile the Specials Schedule for 2011 I came across the announcement from the owners of 24 Raceway in Moberly, Missouri, stating that they would not be racing during the 2011 season, but that the facility is up for sale or for lease if anybody is interested.

"Over the years, there has never been any shortage of folks with suggestions as to how to manage a racetrack, and plenty of those folks have not been shy about offering their advice. Now is an opportunity for those with the ideas to step up and take over a fully operational; turn-key facility, whether it's a lease arrangement or possible sale."

Classic.....

Way to go Hawkeyes! You have to give out three "Player of the Game" awards in this win: Marcus Coker, Micah Hyde and The Replay Official who had the guts to overturn the call on that fourth down pass based upon one split second shot taken from through the legs of one of the Iowa defenders showing the nose of the ball digging into the turf. An Honorable Mention "PoG" to the sideline cameraman who nailed that image!

The 2001 All Iowa Points are complete and I will have a summary up here early next week, plus the full rundown will be added to the Points page.

Have a safe and Happy New Year!

Worries, Concerns And A Look At 2010

As I pull my notes together to summarize the racing events that I was fortunate enough to attend in 2010, I can’t help to worry a bit and wonder just what lies ahead of us as race fans for 2011 and beyond. Too many times this past season I sat in grandstands that were very sparsely filled, usually due to an unfavorable weather forecast or threatening weather. Sadly though, sometimes the skies were bright and blue and there still wasn’t enough fans to fill up half the stands.

Our sport is in trouble folks and we had better realize soon that it is not us, the race fans who will travel a hundred miles or more to get their fix, who will watch a radar all day to see if a track is going to be run or not and who makes room in their entertainment budget to attend two or more shows a week, that can carry the load. Promoters need to get the “casual fans” back to the track and hopefully, by presenting a well-run/high quality program those casual fans will be converted to fanatics like us, or like you……someone who will read the ramblings about racing of some guy on a blog in the middle of December.

How can we help? Well, I saw one example today of what we shouldn’t be doing. The Lee County Speedway in Donnellson issued its first release of their 2011 schedule this week and after running the IMCA Late Models eleven times each of the past two years, the division is only slated to appear twice next season. Obviously this is a business decision being made by the promoters leading one to believe that the race nights that included the Late Models did not draw enough extra people to justify the costs. But for at least one race fan, the announcement was akin to a slap in the face to him stating that he knew of at least ten people who would not come to the races there unless they were running Late Models and wishing the Speedway good luck with their boring four cylinders and too many Mod classes. Does this help the sport at all? There are still two Late Model events on the LCS schedule for next year, wouldn’t it be better to encourage people to get out and support those two Late Model shows so that maybe that number can grow in the future? The comment about the ten people not coming to the races unless the Late Models were running actually made me chuckle because wouldn’t that be about the same as someone saying, after they announced that West Union was closing down early last year, “I know ten people that won’t go to West Union if they’re not having races there”?

Why are we all so negative about everything? The drivers don’t like the rules and the purse isn’t high enough while the fans, at least the ones making the most noise, don’t like much of anything it seems when it comes to the sport. When I was doing my part to help promote “Shiverfest” this Fall I placed the press release stating the Who, What, Where, When and Why, including the purse structure on several websites. On one of them, somebody making their first post ever (a classic AWP) stated that we should be ashamed that we were only paying $550-to-win for the Modifieds given the number of cars that the event draws each year. Hey, thanks a lot for the help buddy! The $550 was actually higher than it had been before thanks to some new sponsors that had come on board, so imagine their pride if they happened to venture across that thread. (By the way, Shiverfest was rained out for the second year in a row but still raised $1,000 to help individuals and families who are fighting kidney disease at the Southeast Renal Dialysis Units.) Yes, I know that the loud-keyboard negative nellies are in the minority, but we have to stop letting them have the most impact when it comes to the internet! Not everything is going to go right when you attend a night of racing at a dirt track, but instead of harping on the one or two things that went wrong, make a point to play up all of the things that went right. It’s not that hard if you really are a “race fan”, just look through all of the previous posts on this blog, or any of the other folks who take the time to promote the sport on Positively Racing, to see how it can be done.

Back to being worried…..the reduced number of Late Model events at Lee County, the fact that 34 Raceway is up for sale, the fact that Bloomfield and Eldon are still looking for promoters and the fact that I haven’t heard one thing out of Columbus Junction tells me that things aren’t going well in my neck of the woods. If they were, then the story for each would be different and it has gotten to the point that even I, the person who always felt like he wanted promote a weekly track once his days of paying tuition were over, no longer has that desire. If you are going to put that much work into it, and take that kind of risk, then the reward needs to cover it and I don’t see that happening in many places anymore. And, when it does, you see racers and “fans” ripping the promoter for making a buck or two. When did it become a crime for a promoter to make money…..to earn a profit for his risk and efforts? I have been a part of several conversations the last few years, and I have seen forum threads discussing who should be the next promoter at such-and-such track and a common statement is, “well he’ll need to lose some money to get things going there.” Really?? Hey sign me up for that! Just what I want is a bunch of people bitching at me and telling me all the stuff I’m doing wrong while LOSING MONEY AT THE SAME TIME!!”

So what needs to change? I think that overall we need a major attitude adjustment and it starts all the way at the top. Have you noticed how many empty seats there are at the NASCAR Cup races? Only if you catch that brief glimpse of the grandstand since the networks have obviously been instructed to stay off of those crowd shots that they were so proud of ten years ago. I’m probably going to piss off most of my driver friends here, but the participants need to realize that things don’t always go up. When NASCAR was riding the wave of popularity the purses grew and, when they were all selling out, the price of the tickets grew even more if you look at things from a percentage standpoint. So now you have Joe Cupdriver making $7 million a year to drive a race car, but he is doing so in front of a grandstand that is only two-thirds full because Family of Four can no longer afford the now $600 that it costs to watch him. So they stay home, perhaps rent a movie, play Wii, or grill out on the back porch. So the question is this, if it takes ticket prices to go back down to $200 to get Family of Four back to the track, is Joe Cupdriver willing to cut his salary down to $2 million a year?

So how can you loosely apply that concept to the weekly track level? Last year we saw a few tracks try reduced admission nights to get more fans out to experience the sport. Of course some of the finest AWP’s stated “it’s about time that the promoters gave back something to the fans,” again showing the stupid attitude that needs to be changed, but for the most part I’m guessing that this type of promotion didn’t work as well as perhaps hoped. If it takes a $5 grandstand ticket to fill the place up again, to get Family of Four out to the local tracks again on a regular basis, then what is Bob Localdriver willing to do to help make this resurgence begin? Perhaps race for a little less money to win, or to run second? What if the price of a pit pass went down from $25 to $15 to make it possible for that kid who helps Bob work on the car to go to the track again every week rather than having to skip a show here and there? Would Bob be willing to accept a reduction of $10 as well in his "to start" check?

For Bob Localdriver it’s not as easy as it is for Joe Cupdriver to still compete for a significantly smaller purse, that’s understandable. The cost of competing on a weekly basis for Bob is going up, up and up, but that is something that the technical folks (the people who actually know something about the rules) are tackling. But the bottom line is this, if we don’t all work together soon, the purse level will be a moot point when the track that Bob used to race at now has weeds growing where the preferred groove used to be.

We made it to sixty-six events during 2010 at thirty-one different tracks located in six different states (Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee). Once again we spent the most time, twelve nights, at the Knoxville Raceway and close behind was the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson where we spent nine evenings. Four trips each were made to 34 Raceway just west of Burlington, Quincy Raceways and the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa while I went to the high-banks in Marshalltown three times this season. I went to Dubuque, Moberly, Farley, Tipton and Vinton each twice this year while the following tracks were visited once this year: Lincoln IL, Sedalia MO, West Liberty, Quad City, Independence, Webster City, Spoon River IL, Tri-City IL, Tri-State IN, West Union, Columbus Junction, US 36 (Osborn MO), Peoria IL and Memphis MO. Plus I visited the following tracks for the first-time ever: The Chili Bowl (Tulsa OK), Duck River TN, Clarke County (Osceola), Valley Speedway MO, Butler MO and Mineral City in Fort Dodge. And the visit to Fort Dodge returns me to that status of having been to each and every track in the state of Iowa that currently runs a weekly show!

As far as series were concerned we saw the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models nine times, the USMTS Modifieds and the USAC Sprints four times, the Hawkeye Dirt Tour three times and the Lucas Oil Late Models, the Sprint Invaders, The UMP Summer Nationals and the Corn Belt Clash twice. We caught one show each of the POWRi Midgets, the USAC Midgets, the Southern Regional Racing Series, the Monster Midwest Late Models, the Mid-America Modifieds and the MLRA Late Models. Twelve of the sixty-six races (18.2%) that I attended this year were “weekly shows”. I started the year with my first-ever visit to the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa for the Tuesday night qualifier and I ended my season on Halloween Day with my first visit to the track in Butler, Missouri. I was amazed at the number of races that I was able to compile given the battle with the weather throughout most of the year, but I will say that there were a lot of nights where I was watching the radar nearly as much as I was watching the racing action. Here’s hoping that the 2011 season will be a good one for all of us both at, and away from the racetrack.

Have a safe and wonderful Holiday season from Jeff, Christine, Ashley, Kyle and Morgan out here on the Back Stretch!

Jones, Stovall, Cornell, Wilson and Cheevers All Stake Claim On First All Missouri Points Championship

There were no repeats, and no former champions returning to the top as five drivers earned their first All Missouri Points titles in 2010.

The Late Model championship did stay in the same hometown though as Larry Jones of Eldorado Springs replaced fellow resident and 2009 champion Donnie Timmerman at the top of the list. Jones picked up five feature wins among his twenty-six top-five finishes this season to out-distance his competition by seventeen points. With a victory in the final race of the season on Thanksgiving weekend in Springfield, Justin Wells edged out the defending champion Timmerman by just one point to take the runner-up honors. Wells picked up ten checkered flags on Missouri ovals in 2010 while Timmerman tallied five feature victories. Veteran drivers Alan Vaughn and Ken Essary rounded out the top five.

Galena driver Jesse Stovall built up a solid lead in the Modified standings early in the season and his point total held up as he went Late Model racing around the south during August and September winning races in that division as well. Stovall accumulated sixteen feature wins in twenty-five top-fives and that was enough to edge out Jason Russell by just three points for the AMP championship. Russell, a regular competitor at Callaway and Lake Ozark, had eleven wins in twenty-seven top-fives. St. Louis area driver Rusty Griffaw finished in the third spot while Jackie Dalton and Johnny Fennewald tied for fourth. The top-five drivers in the final Modified point standings were separated by only seven markers, a very tight group given the five-point-scale system used. Two-time defending champion Tim Setzer finished eighth.

Another tight battle played out in the Sprint Car division as the top four in the final standings ended up being separated by just three points. Jonathan Cornell of Sedalia, behind three feature wins and twelve top-fives accumulated one more point than both Josh Fisher and Randy Martin while Joey Montgomery finished fourth just three points back. Jimmy Hurley completed the top five. Jesse Hockett had the lead and appeared to be headed for his second straight All Missouri Points Sprint Car title before his tragic death this Spring.

Vance Wilson emerged from the pack mid-season and stormed to a convincing championship in the Limited Late Model division. Wilson’s sixteen feature wins were seven more than anybody else could muster in the division in 2010 as he downed runner-up Jason Bodenhammer by twenty-five points. Bob Test had one less top-five (23) than the champion and finished in the third position while Brandon Imhoff and Jeff Herzog filled out the top five.

Three drivers appeared to be going “all out” for the 2011 Limited Modified All Missouri Points Championship as they could be found racing all over the western half of the state from Kansas City down to Monett. And, using the same point-scale for all divisions, these three drivers tallied more points than any of the champions in the other divisions. Colt Cheevers started strong and ran strong all year to hold off a late charge from defending champion Brad Smith to take the 2010 AMP title. Cheevers had forty top-five finishes on Show-Me State soil including twenty-one feature victories in a very impressive season. Smith had more wins in Missouri than anybody else this year with twenty-three among his thirty-three top five as he finished fifteen points behind Cheevers in second. J.C. Morton ran in the top-five thirty-five times and grabbed thirteen checkered flags on his way to a third-place finish in the final standings and both Eric Tinderholt and Kenny Harris were impressive as well topping the 100-point mark as they finished in fourth and fifth respectively.

The full standings for all five divisions can be found on the Points tab at PositivelyRacing.com.

One Down, Five More Years To Go!

A couple of months into the 2000 racing season I made the decision to stop compiling the All Iowa Points. The fact that I was very busy and in the midst of the third year of the running the NKF Tour was the primary reason for making that decision. But there was also a level of frustration given the way that results were being edited out of Hawkeye Racing News that sealed the deal. Ten years later, and with a gap from 1999 through 2005 when I do not have the All Iowa Points champions tabulated, I figured that a few missing results here and there were much better than nothing and with the help of Barry Johnson’s archives I am now working on filling in that gap.

Today I completed the 2000 racing season, a season that will be remembered as the year that we lost two superb promoters in Al Frieden and Albert Scott. A year that ended in triumph for Gary Webb as he captured the NASCAR National Championship on the strength of fifteen straight wins at the Dubuque Speedway, and year that saw the “Final Sunset” as Sunset Speedway in Omaha ran its final race ever with Joe Kosiski taking the win. Take a few moments and re-live the past by going to the Points page at Positively Racing and seeing where your favorites of then, and now, ranked in the final rundown of the 2000 All Iowa Points.

For Webb it was a return to the top of the All Iowa Late Model Points, a position that he held for five straight seasons (1993 – 1997) before being bumped by Steve Boley in 1998 and Chris Smyser in 1999. As usual Gary could be found at just about any Late Model event in the Midwest as evidenced by a victory in a Late Model special at Interstate Speedway just across the state line from Sioux City. It was one of the twenty-four feature wins that Webb captured on AIP tracks during the season and this would be his eighth championship overall with titles in 1980 and 1981 as well. Webb’s eight championships ties him now with Ed Sanger (1969, ‘70, ‘71, ‘72, ‘73, ‘75, ‘76 and ‘83) for the most All Iowa Points titles of all time. Will Webb break that tie in 2001? I hope to start working on that year beginning this weekend.

Late Model runner-up Steve Boley tallied sixteen wins on AIP tracks as he claimed the NASCAR All Star Series title in 2000. Joe Kosiski, the 1992 AIP Late Model champion, used his victory at “The Final Sunset” to tie Jeff Aikey for third while Kyle Berck completed the top five. Rick Wages was sixth, Mark Burgtorf seventh, Darrel DeFrance eighth, Darren Miller ninth and the 2000 Deery Brothers Summer Series champion Mike Smith was tenth.

Ron Barker notched fourteen feature wins and earned the 2000 NKF Tour points title on the way to his third All Iowa Points Modified championship. Barker had won the title in 1997 and 1998 before yielding to Troy Folkerts in 1999. The Dubuque driver was also the 1984 All Iowa Points Street Stock champion. Ricky Stephan finished just seven points behind Barker for the 2000 Modifed title while Jeff Walker took third. Rich Lewerke ended up fourth while Bob Dominacki, the 1983 AIP Street Stock champ, took fifth.

The Pro Stock division was still going pretty strong at tracks in east central Iowa while western Iowa and eastern Nebraska tracks were hosting strong fields of Grand National Late Models. These two divisions were combined to determine and All Iowa Points champion and it was Jeremiah Hurst who earned his second championship in the division. John Anderson and Tom Hanson tied for second, Jeff Fallon ranked fourth and Dan Helm, who was nearly unbeatable at Aledo, finished fifth. Sadly the driver who finished tenth in the final standings, Dwight Wrich, lost his life from injuries sustained in a late season accident at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison.

The most dominating driver of the 2000 All Iowa Points racing season was Jeff Anderson of Atlantic who won forty feature races on the way to his first AIP Stock Car championship. Anderson beat out future two-time champ (2006 & 2007) Brian Blessington by 95 points with Dana Wells taking third. Scott Bloemke and Scott Carlson tied for the fourth spot in the final standings.

With fourteen feature wins and a string of consistent top-five finishes Randy Embrey of Granger claimed his first All Iowa Points Hobby Stock championship matching the feat that his father Larry accomplished in 1990 and 1993. Brian Schmitt finished thirty points behind Embrey in second while Damon Murty finished third. Defending (1999) champion Kris Walker took fourth and the 2000 NKF Tour points champion Dan Hanselman ranked fifth.

The year 2000 will go down as the first year that the Limited Modified division points were tabulated with Larry Cook of Fort Dodge being the inaugural champion. Alex Webner, Lance Gardner and Ryan Ruter were next in line while Brian Wendel was the top eastern Iowa driver in fifth.

Terry McCarl dominated the 410 Sprint Car division with sixteen wins and more than twice as many points as runner-up Danny Lasoski. The 2000 All Iowa Points championship would be McCarl’s third straight and fifth overall at the time, and when you add in his 2009 title he now has six and counting. As I fill in the gap from 2001 to 2005 McCarl may just surpass the eight championships of Gary Webb and Ed Sanger.

In the 360 ranks it was Jake Peters earning his first AIP championship edging out Ryan Jamison by just seven points. Gordy Vogelaar ranked third ahead of mid-season leader Tim St. Arnold while Dusty Ballenger completed the top five.

A full rundown of the 2000 All Iowa Points can be found at Positively Racing and work will begin soon on the 2001 season. Check back here on the Back Stretch for updates.

Monday Notes.....

A few thoughts as Christine takes the wheel on our way back from a fun weekend in Tulsa….

Cody Darrah, the youngster from Pennsylvania who was all set for his rookie campaign with the World of Outlaws behind the wheel of one of the Kasey Kahne Motorsports sprinters before a highway accident in Volusia County broke his femur in February, returned in grand style on Halloween weekend by winning the winged sprint feature at Hagerstown, Maryland. It was Darrah’s first race since his injury. During that same weekend Brad Sweet wheeled one of Kahne’s cars to the $15,000 Short Track Nationals victory at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock. It will be interesting to see if Darrah gets a mulligan on that rookie campaign with Kahne in 2011.

If you are a Modified fan mark your calendar for April 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th as the Deer Creek Speedway near Racine, Minnesota, will stage the $20,000-to-win “World Modified Dirt Track Championship”. The event will run under USMTS rules, but will not be one of the series point races. Drivers can choose to qualify on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday night and if they pay an extra entry fee they can purchase a “mulligan” that will allow them to throw out their first night and try again on Thursday or Friday. Interesting concept, now we just need to have some favorable spring weather in southeast Minnesota!

If you haven’t listened to Dewain Hulett’s CFF Racing Show found at the Tri-State Speed Review lately you have missed out on one of the juicier off-season side stories in some time. Rumors hit the street, and of course the message boards a few weeks back indicating that eight tracks were going to switch from IMCA sanctioning to USRA sanctioning. Kudos to Hulett for going straight to the folks who were at the center of the rumored scenario and getting them to go on the record while asking some tough questions. The result was two different versions of the tale, but at this point it appears that those eight tracks will remain with IMCA for some time to come. Listening to these interviews is quite intriguing and I have enjoyed the different conclusions that “forum posters” have come to even though they are hearing the exact same thing showing how a certain bias can sway you one way or another. One thing is for certain though, if not for these interviews, that original forum post that talked about the rumors would be 20 or 30 pages long by now. Funny how facts can get in the way of a good forum post, isn’t it?

Southeast Iowa hobby stock driver Tanner Thomann was the co-host with Hulett on these shows and Thomann is unique in the fact that he is the only driver from that division in this area that has openly expressed his support for a move to the IMCA sanctioning of Hobby Stocks at 34 Raceway and Lee County. The interesting note here is that Thomann is not some back marker wanting to even out the playing field; he is a track champion. We’ll see if that idea gets any traction around here, I know that northeast Iowa driver Steve Holthaus would support Thomann by telling his story of how he went from thinking that 9:1 motors were the dumbest idea ever, to how he feels today after making the change.

Did you know that for the past forty-three days it has only rained on three of those days here in southeast Iowa? Of course two of those were the weekend that we tried to run Shiverfest at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. That makes two years in a row that Mother Nature has picked up all five “feature wins”, do you think she is trying to tell us something?

I talked to my buddy “Herb” today and he wondered when my son Morgan was going to update his Open Wheel News and Notes blog again. Well Herbie, not only is Mo busy with school, but he has something else distracting him as well.

I can’t say that I blame him for not finding the time to post a new blog entry!

There will be a couple of changes at Positively Racing for 2011. The first will be on the Calendar where we will try to expand the Special Events schedule to include all events at tracks in Iowa and all of the states that border the Hawkeye state. We will do our best to keep up with changes, additions and subtractions on the Specials calendar as the season plays out as I have heard from several people this past year that they actually found a mid-week event by accessing our calendar. On the Weekly calendar we will now only list those tracks that are included in the All Iowa Points. The other change is that we will no longer tabulate the All Missouri Points in 2011. I know that there are several drivers, especially in the B-Mod ranks, who have paid close attention to the Missouri standings again this year, but looking at the page view statistics for the site we are just not getting enough looks to justify the time that goes in to tabulating the points. There is one more points-paying event on the schedule, at the Springfield Raceway on Thanksgiving weekend, and after that we will post the final points for about a month before taking them down. If anybody in the Show-Me state is interested in picking up the ball and keeping the points alive in 2011 let me know and I will be happy to share the spreadsheets with you.

Speaking of Missouri, The Racin’ Boys will debut a new weekly internet audio program tonight, November 8th, as Kirk Elliott will host the KC Race Report. This show will focus on tracks right around the Kansas City metro area and was developed after it was noted that perhaps their Track Talk show that runs on Sports Radio 810 WHB every Saturday morning had become more national in scale.

I'm getting closer to completing the first year (2000) of my research to close the gap of when I did not compile the All Iowa Points. Here are the top ten in each division through August 23, 2000. We will have the full rundown on the Points page at Positively Racing once I get through the remaining weeks of that 2000 season.

A Trip To Butler Wraps Up The 2010 Season

All the factors were in place on Sunday afternoon for one last racing adventure for the 2010 season. The weather forecast for west central Missouri was for dry weather, a little windy but dry. The Butler Motor Speedway had an interesting show lined up featuring Late Models, Modifieds, B-Modifieds and couple of more support classes. And perhaps most importantly, the show was scheduled for a 3 p.m. start time meaning that I could leave at a reasonable time and likely get back home by midnight or a little after given the five-hour one-way trip. So I called my colleague Kevin Trittien (TapFan’s Tours) to see if he wanted to join me and the trip was on!!

If you are like me, when you have not yet attended a track, you build a picture of it in your mind based upon things that you have heard about it, read about it, seen in pictures from the internet or even from the glimpse that you can get of it when you drive by. Sometimes the picture that you build in your mind is pretty close to reality, while other times you are surprised by just how far off you were. For instance, when I went to Mason City for the first time I was surprised by how big of a track it was and by how black the dirt was. And when I went to Decorah for the first time I had no idea about the O-shaped surface and just how cool it was to sit in that old covered grandstand with the hills of northeast Iowa surrounding you. (yes, I’m getting sappy in my older years). Butler Motor Speedway or BMS as it is known sits just off the east side of the four lanes of Highway 71 and if you didn’t have one of Allen Brown’s Speedway Directories I don’t think you’d have a chance of figuring out just how to get there once you left the highway. You can’t see much from 71 and I have slowed down and tried to get as good as a look as I could the five or six times that I have driven by it the past few years. From those glances, and from the other methods of building a mental picture that I mentioned above, I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived and found a nice and wide, gradually banked track that was larger than I had imagined.

The track prep crew had done a nice job of getting enough water into the surface to not only ward off the mid-day sun, but to stand up to a stiff wind out of the east that was blowing straight into the faces of us race fans. For a “day race” on a dirt track, we saw some good action during the heats and the first couple of features before ol’ BMS rubbered up and locked down for the Modified and Late Model main events. That wind was chilly, but with a little extra water around the edges during intermission, it was more a coating of residual rubber that I had to scrub off my face and out of my ears when I finally returned home rather than dirt.

The Factory Stocks were the first feature to hit the track and it was Don Dannar who showed that the high-line was usable as he drove past Paul Snyder mid-race for the lead and then went on to victory. Brian Ziegler also moved past Snyder to finish second while “The Wellsville Wonder” Snyder took third. Twenty-three B-Mods took to the track next and, as anticipated, there were a number of cautions to deal with. Bobby Maggard used the outside of row one starting spot to take the early lead from pole-sitter J.C. Morton with Jay Lamons running in third. It seemed like we were getting in one lap at a time with the cautions, but for the restarts with the double-file realignments I noted something interesting. It was announced that the second-place driver was given a choice of starting on that first double row on the inside or the outside, but for some reason Morton and Lamons kept choosing the inside. Makes sense, huh? A daytime racetrack, the bottom line has to be the better choice, right? Wrong. When Morton was running second under green, he’d restart on the inside and Lamons would ride the high groove off of four to take second for the next scored lap. The caution would come out again, Lamons would start on the inside and Morton would regain the second spot. This seemed to go back and forth at least four times leaving Kevin and I to wonder if they truly were “choosing” to restart on the bottom. This little sidebar ended though on lap six when the caution waved for a car that had spun in turn two, but well after the caution waved there apparently was contact between our two contenders for the runner-up spot and Morton went spinning down the frontstretch. After some heated discussion with track officials Morton ended up in the pits while the announcer said that Lamons would be headed that way as well only to have him then restart the race from the rear.

While all of this lap-by-lap action and additional drama was playing out, the man to watch was Mike Striegel. The driver from Hermitage had an impressive run in his heat race come to an end when he popped a right front tire, so he had started this event from outside of row eleven. And now, for this lap six restart, he would now be the driver on the inside of that first double row. Maggard did his best to hold him off, but with four laps remaining Bobby drifted a bit off of turn two and that was all that Striegel needed to get past him and go on to claim an impressive victory, whether it was day or night! Maggard continued to fade and eventually pulled off the track leaving Andrew Smith to finish second, Eric Tinderholt was third, Andy Beauchamp took fourth and Mark Evinger ran in fifth. Striegel wasn’t the only one who made up ground as Smith started tenth, Tinderholt came from thirteenth and Evinger started in the 19th position.

The Street Stock feature was next although three of the nine cars involved also ran in the Factory Stock division. All eight however were left wondering how in the heck they were supposed to keep up with Sundance Keeper as he cruised to an easy victory.

Twenty-five cars made the call for the Modified feature event and it took four tries and a single-file starting grid before one lap would be completed. Once under green you could tell that the track had become lightning fast, but incredibly one-grooved and it was pole-sitter Chad Lyle’s race to win or lose. The veteran driver out of Lone Jack who has made an impressive comeback from health issues earlier in the season is too good to “lose” a race like this and he cruised the entire distance out front for the $1,500 victory. Shad Badder started third and finished second, Terry Schultz started third and finished third, Aaron Marrant moved from sixth to fourth and Jody Tillman finished where he started in fifth.

A short field of eleven Late Models signed in, but by feature time only eight remained and there was no stopping Matt Johnson as he went flag-to-flag for the win. Larry Jones was the runner-up, David Turner took third, Chuck Comer was fourth and Jerry Morgan took fifth.

With the track locking down the action in the Modified and Late Model features was limited, but it was still an entertaining day at a new track for us and we were glad that we made the trip. Race fans in western Missouri, eastern Kansas should pay attention to the Racin’ Boys website over the winter as the new ownership at BMS prepares for what should be a solid 2011 campaign.

Kevin and I also enjoyed a few minutes talking with Trenton Berry. The announcer for the MLRA Late Model series, Berry has launched a new website RacinDirt.com that will feature video and audio highlights from events around the Midwest and much more.

The trip to Butler was a nice way to wrap up our 2010 racing season. Keep checking in to Positively Racing and the Back Stretch during the off season as I will offer up a summary soon of the 66 events that I attended this year, and I will try to keep you up to date on any news that I can pick up here and there. Plus, I am working on closing the gap between 2000 and 2005 when I did not compile the All Iowa Points and I should have the 2000 season completed soon. Do you remember what division that Jason Rauen was racing in then? How did Curt Hansen and Ed Sanger do in the twilight of their careers? Did all those wins in a row at Dubuque net Gary Webb his eighth All Iowa Points championship? Hey, what else have you got to do during the winter? Check back here often!
