Familar Names At The Top of Nine All Iowa Points Divisions

Familiar names continued to top the list as all nine of the 2012 All Iowa Points titlists have won AIP championships before. Six of this year’s champs repeated from 2011, two of them collected their first title in another division and one of the 2012 champions returned to the top of the podium for a record eleventh time.
Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee Ray Guss Jr. got off to an uncharacteristically slow start in 2012, but he found his groove as spring turned to summer and for the fourth year in a row Guss is the All Iowa Points Late Model champion. The veteran driver known as “The River City Hustler” won twenty features in 2012 as part of forty-nine top five finishes and easily outdistanced runner-up Todd Cooney by fifty points to earn his seventh overall AIP Late Model title. Guss was also the champion for three straight years back in 1989, 1990 and 1991. It was the second year in a row for Cooney to finish as the runner-up as his sixteen feature wins marked another solid season for the Des Moines driver. Tyler Bruening’s improvement continues as he advanced from seventh in 2011 up to a third-place finish in 2012 posting sixteen wins as well while Andy Eckrich and Darrel DeFrance completed the top five.

The Modified point chase was tight throughout with ten drivers still in contention over the final four weeks of the season. In the end though it was Ryan Dolan prevailing for his third straight All Iowa Points crown by just three points over seven time Modified (1997-98, 2000-04) and 1984 Street Stock champion Ron Barker. Dolan scored eleven feature wins and had forty-two top-five finishes in 2012 compared to Barker’s twelve wins and thirty-nine top-fives. Two-time champion Mark Schulte (2006-07) used a fourth-place finish on the final weekend to take third by just one point over Jimmy Gustin who posted his best AIP Modified ranking by finishing in the fourth spot only eleven points out of first. Southeast Nebraska driver Dylan Smith was fifth while two drivers who were on top of the standings during the heart of the season, Jay Noteboom and Chris Ableson were sixth and seventh respectively.
Jesse Sobbing dominated the Limited Modified standings once again essentially leading from start to finish to post an 84-point advantage over runner-up Tony Dunker. Sobbing’s stats for 2012 were again phenomenal as he won forty-two feature races on All Iowa Points tracks and was in the top-five sixty-one times and that doesn’t include what he did well beyond the borders of Iowa. This is the Glenwood native’s third straight AIP championship in this division and the word is that the Modified division may have a new contender in 2013. This was a breakout season for Dunker as the Quincy, Illinois, driver posted twenty-six feature wins on his way to three track championships in Burlington, Donnellson and Quincy. The same could be said about young Austin Moyer of Dubuque who won twenty-three races on his way to a third-place ranking with central Iowa talent Racer Hulin and Nick Roberts placing fourth and fifth.

The chase for the 2012 All Iowa Points title in the Stock Car division was fun to follow with several drivers still in the hunt as the calendar turned to September. At the end though it was one of the talented racing brothers from Lake City on top of the standings as Donavon Smith won his first career AIP Stock Car championship.  Donavon has also won the All Iowa Points Hobby Stock crown twice in 2004 and 2006 and in this season he used fifteen feature wins and forty-two top five finishes to edge out Luke Sathoff by just nine points. Sathoff pulled off the I-90 triple crown winning the track championships at Fairmont, Jackson and Worthington winning fifteen features along the way and perennial Stock Car contender Damon Murty finished in the third spot. Abe Huls and Jason Cook filled out the top five for 2012.
Donavon’s brother Devin Smith overtook early leaders John Watson and Shannon Anderson to win his third-straight All Iowa Points Hobby Stock Championship. This is the second time that two of the Smith brothers have won AIP titles in the same season as Dustin won the Stock Cars in 2010 joining Devin and overall this makes eleven AIP crowns for the family. Devin had fifty-six top five finishes including thirty-seven feature wins this season to propel him to the top of the list. Scott Pippert of Elberon made a late charge to register his best career ranking in the All Iowa Points as the runner-up with twenty-nine feature wins this season. The 2012 IMCA Hobby Stock National Champion Shannon Anderson had another stellar season as the two-time AIP champ (2008-09) finished in the third position. John Watson got off to a torrid start and paced the division early before finishing in fourth and southeast Iowa’s Dustin Griffiths finished fifth.

Nobody earned more All Iowa Points this season than Merv Chandler did as the veteran driver outdistanced the rest of the Four Cylinder field by 129 points to win his third AIP championship, but his first in this division. Merv’s first two All Iowa titles came way back in 1984 and ‘85 in the Modified division and in 2012 he posted an amazing seventy-two top-five finishes including thirty-three feature wins. Chandler’s buddy Bill Whalen Jr. spent much of the season chasing him, but did win enough of his own races to finish second in the final point standings only two markers ahead of Jacob Ellithorpe.  The 2011 Four Cylinder champ Nathan Chandler ranked fourth this season one position ahead of the young lady from Estherville, Megan Lappegard.
The Sprint car divisions had two repeat winners and one return champion as Terry McCarl earned his record eleventh All Iowa Points championship in the 410 c.i. division. “T-Mac” scored eight feature wins along the way and added 2012 to his list that includes 1994, 1996, 1998 through 2004, and 2009. Five-time champion Mark Dobmeier (2006-08, 2010-11) was a distant second this season with Brian Brown in third. The top four in the 360 division finished within five points, or just one feature win of each other with Jack Dover earning his third straight All Iowa Points crown. The 2009 champion Mike Boston was a close second, Skylar Prochaska burst on to the scene this year taking third while the 2010 co-champion Eric Lutz ranked fourth. And in the 305 Sprints it was Bill Boles of Harris who defended his 2011 AIP title in style overtaking Burlington drivers Daniel Bergquist and Donnie Steward who tied for second.

Foster Stays Hot, VanDerWal, Huls and Hughes Also Win At Memphis

It took until the final weekend of October, but the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri, got back to racing with the annual Fall Nationals and despite the chilly weather a good field of cars provided the action for some bundled up race fans on Sunday afternoon.

The 18-lap Sport Mod main event was the first of six features on the day's schedule with David Wietholder pacing the field for the first two laps. Tony Johnson had started next to Wietholder on the front row and he made the pass for the lead on lap three, but the man on the move was Saturday's winner Curtis VanDerWal. Coming from the seventh starting spot VanDerWal steadily picked his way toward the front and on the tenth trip around the 3/8th-mile oval Curtis eased ahead of his fellow Oskaloosa resident Johnson for the lead. And from there VanDerWal pulled away to complete the weekend sweep with Johnson finishing well back in second. Brandon Dale survived some late race contact with northeast Iowa driver Eric Pollard to pick up the third spot with Bill Gibson fourth and Wietholder fifth. Jim Gillenwater had mechanical issues with his new car during the heat race, so he replaced Bobby Six in his old car, started 19th and raced his way up to fourth before slipping to sixth at the finish.

The Stock Cars were up next for 20-laps with Abe Huls using his pole position start to open up a sizable lead. A caution on lap twelve brought the field back to the leader, but again Huls began to pull away on the restart. Jason Cook had started in the sixth row and with five laps remaining he slipped by Michael Jeannette for second. Cook gradually cut into the lead of Huls, but he could get no closer than two car-lengths before the checkers waved and it was Huls who would celebrate today in victory lane. Cook, who won twice at Donnellson last week and also won here on Saturday, would have to settle for runner-up money today. Central Missouri driver Derrick Agee was solid in third, Jeannette finished in fourth and Beau Taylor filled out the top five.

The 20-lap Modified feature took to the track next with young Cayden Carter setting the early pace with Andrew Schroeder in hot pursuit. Josh Foster has been the man to beat this Fall in the Modified division and it only took him three laps to move from eighth to third and when the caution waved for Shotrod Reese on lap six, Foster lined up alongside Schroeder for the restart. When the green flag flew once again Foster made his move to the inside of turn one and by turn two he had the lead and would begin to pull away. Foster appeared to have the race well in hand, but with four laps to go a slowing Dakota Hayden cut down the track in front of Foster in turn three and the leader could not avoid contact. Foster spun his car to keep from making major contact and was able to stay in motion as the caution flag waved for Hayden. Foster would lead the field back to the green and while Schroeder was able to stay close he could not mount a challenge over the final four laps as Foster tallied his fourth win over the past two weeks. Schroeder and Carter would finish second and third, Steven DeLonjay came from the eighth row to finish fourth and Brandon Banks took the fifth spot. As hot as he has been, Josh Foster is probably tempted to look for the closest race to run next weekend to see if he can continue this streak.

Mike Hughes started from the pole of the 12-lap Hobby Stock main event and, while Dustin Griffiths was able to put some heat on him late, there was no stopping Hughes from completing a weekend sweep of the division. Griffiths started fifth and finished second, A.J. Johnson suffered a flat tire during his heat race so he started  16th and last on the field racing his way up to third at the checkers, Casey Greubel came from the fifth row to take fourth and Tim Pettibone passed Garrett Eilander on the final lap to finish fifth.

It was now dark and 38 degrees so I decided to head for home before the final two features, but before I pulled into my driveway our webmistress Sue McDaniel called to scold me for leaving early. Sue reported that the Outlaw Hobby Stock feature came down to the final lap and, just like last Sunday at Donnellson, Jake Wenig made a final turn pass of Brandon Symmonds to take the win. It is quite possible that this was the last ever appearance of the "Outlaw" Hobby class in this area as 34 Raceway in Burlington has dropped the division for 2013 and our own Danny Rosencrans reported earlier this week that the Quincy Raceways will drop the class as well.

Sue then said that the Sport Compact feature closed out the show in a wild fashion as Merv Chandler pass Austen Becerra coming to the line to take the win and that after the checkers Becerra "dumped him" in turn one causing Chandler to roll his car. I guess that I should have stuck it out to the finish!!

That will wrap up the season in this area, but there is still some racing to be found not too far down the road. Valley Speedway just east of Kansas City will close out its 2012 season next Saturday night November 3rd. On the other side of KC the Atchison County Raceway will run weekly right on through Thanksgiving weekend when they will have a Friday/Saturday doubleheader to close out the year. And down in Springfield, Missouri, the Springfield Raceway will run the rescheduled Larry Phillips Memorial on November 3rd before closing out the season with the annual "Turkey Classic" on November 17th. The "Turkey" will hopefully be my 55th and final race night of the 2012 season, perhaps I will see you there!

Foster and Cook Head List of Extravaganza Winners at Lee County

The two-day Discount Tire and Service Fall Extravaganza closed out the 2012 season at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson and success on Saturday night led to big money results on Sunday in five out of the six divisions. The top six finishers in Saturday's Qualifying features locked themselves in to Sunday's main events and they were aligned straight up from the qualifying night finish with five drivers completing the clean sweep from the pole position while the sixth driver saw his son come from the back of the field to win on the final lap.

The Sport Compacts were the first of six features on the card with Adam Gates driving to a big lead following the drop of the green. A pair of cautions just past the mid-point of this 15-lapper brought the field back to Gates and even though Merv Chandler had moved up from eighth to second he was still no match for Gates. The Cedar Rapids driver won the season finale at Lee County last year during Shiverfest and there was no touching Gates tonight as he cruised to the $400 victory ahead of Chandler, Skip Dunker, John Whalen and Josh Barnes who came from a seventh row starting spot.

The "Outlaw" Hobby Stock main was next with twelve cars making the start for the 16-lap event. Last night's winner Dan Wenig started from the pole, but it was Brandon Symmonds who would move to the lead at the start. Wenig gave chase and even challenged Symmonds on a couple of occasions before he spun in turn two with five laps remaining. On the restart Dan's son Jake Wening was now in a position to challenge after problems in his heat race landed him on row six for the feature. Symmonds maintained his lead with the younger Wenig just behind and on the final lap Jake drove hard into turn three and was able to make it stick to steal the win away from Symmonds at the checkers. Brian Hoener would take the third spot, John Oliver Jr. recovered from an early spin to place fourth while Jeff DeLonjay completed the top five.

The Sport Mod feature was up next and with a hefty $1,200 top prize on the line Cayden Carter took over the #01 normally driven by his younger brother Brayton for the weekend and dominated this 25-lap event. Nobody could keep pace with "The Gasman" as he flew to the win, but the race for second was definitely entertaining with Tony Dunker and Derek St. Clair swapping the position back and forth over the final five laps. St. Clair would prevail for the runner-up money, Dunker finished in the third spot, Eric Flander was fourth and Tom Elsen filled out the top five.

The 9:1 Hobby Stocks were a late addition to the weekend and eleven cars were on hand. The track actually started the season running the IMCA Hobby Stocks only to scrap them after the first week and it was the same driver who won on opening night that closed out the season with a win as well. Dustin Griffiths was never challenged throughout the 16-lap distance as he picked up the $500 victory. Bill Bonnett started seventh and was up to second on the first lap, but that would be where he would stay finishing ahead of Jacob Keiser, Tim Pettibone and Dane Blozovich. It will be interesting to see what new promoter Mike VanGenderen will do with the Hobby Stock division at Lee County in 2013, but if I were a betting man I would say that the IMCA class will be the one that he goes with.

The Stock Cars lived up to their reputation by running an entertaining 30-laps featuring plenty of side-by-side racing action even though the lead never changed hands. Pole-sitter Jason Cook would pace the field with most of the drivers choosing to run the bottom two grooves around the speedway. Andy Altenburg had made the trip down from Minnesota and, after spinning in his heat race, found himself starting from row ten in the main event. Instead of joining "the pack" running down low, Altenburg went up top and steadily picked his way toward the front and when the caution waved on lap 17 he found himself restarting in the seventh psoition. Cook had plenty of pressure coming from Nathan Wood, Abe Huls and John Oliver Jr., but it was Altenburg who showed him a nose with just six laps to go. After seeing the competition up top, Cook appeared to pick up the pace a bit holding back the visitor's run and when Altenburg caught the turn three guardrail on lap 26 that broke his momentum just enough to allow Wood and Oliver to get back by him. Cook did not falter over the final laps and would go on to cash in the $1,200 winner's check ahead of Oliver Jr. and Wood while Altenburg nipped Huls at the line by inches to take fourth.

The 30-lap Modified feature would close out the night with Josh Foster starting from the pole and establishing himself as the man to beat from the drop of the green. Kurt Kile made a challenge early before Bruce Hanford found the middle groove to his liking. Hanford was able to pull even with Foster on two occasions, but Josh was able to maintain the lead each time and when Hanford dropped out with mechanical issues on lap 24 this one was all over. Foster would take the $1,500 win by nearly half a lap over Steven DeLonjay, Brandon Banks made a late race charge to finish third with Kurt Kile and Tyler Cale next in line.

It was an entertaining and efficient program on a track that had slicked off due to the warm October sunshine combined with a steady breeze and temperatures above the 70 degree mark. Thanks to announcer Tony Paris for inviting me up to talk a bit about Positively Racing and to Speedway owner Dave Sapp and his entire staff for their hospitality.

Promoter Mike VanGenderen will partner with the Scotland County Fair board for another two-day show next Friday and Saturday night as the annual Fall Nationals runs at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri, on October 26th and 27th.

Finally it was another big weekend for our family as, for the second time in two weeks, a beautiful young lady said "yes" when proposed to by one of our sons. Pictured below is Morgan, who also does some Sprint Car and Midget blogging on Positively Racing when he has the time, along with his fiance' Shelbi Pitcher who is from Monument, Colorado, and plays volleyball at the University of Tulsa. Two proposals in two weeks, and this father could not be happier!

All Missouri Points Through 10/20

The final points-paying event for 2012 is scheduled for Saturday November 17th at the Springfield Raceway.
