The were several special events scheduled for our area on Thursday night including Columbus Junction, Maquoketa, Webster City and Deer Creek so I was a bit disappointed when I learned just last week that I would have to be out of the state that evening. To ease the pain I kept telling myself that at the very least I would not be faced with having to make a decision as to which one of these specials I would attend and then sit there and wonder if I should have gone someplace else. Yes, I know that is a lame way of thinking, but hey the season is starting to wind towards an end and missing a race night can be stressful!
As luck would have it my travels took me through Indianapolis this week and, with the Brickyard 400 coming up this Sunday I figured that there must be something going on in the area on Thursday night. Sure enough the Lucas Oil Raceway Park, formerly known as IRP, was kicking off the Brickyard race weekend with a tripleheader featuring the USAC Midgets and Silver Crown cars as well as the Jegs CRA All Star pavement Late Model series.
This was my third visit to this beautiful facility that features a 0.6 mile progressively banked pavement track with the NHRA drag strip positioned behind the spacious grandstand and I arrived just as the first heat race for the midgets was set to push off. There were 22 midgets on hand to run 30-laps in the Rich Vogler Classic and pole-sitter Mario Clouser would lead the field to score lap number one. As the leaders entered turn one on the second circuit, the second and third running cars of Darren Hagan and Bobby Santos III made contact and both made hard contact into the softer-barrier wall. The real crash was yet to come though as the cars behind them checked up, but Adam Kramer did not and he hopped a wheel launching him high into the air and into the catch fence. Kramer’s car both spun and rolled along the top of the wall and along the fence until it came to rest just past the original two cars that started the melee and, after a moment of hushed silence, there was a great deal of relief when all three drivers emerged from their rides with no serious injuries. As I wandered down toward turn one to check out the fence repairs, four ladies who were with Kramer were still obviously shaken up and were taking pictures of the fence to show Adam why he might want to back away from the big tracks and I am sure he is talking them back out of it today. The fence repairs took nearly forty-five minutes to complete, but it did its job keeping the sharp looking #2 from leaving the ballpark.
On the restart “The NorCal Ninja” Kyle Larson came out of nowhere to take the lead from Clouser as Larson had originally started the event from the seventh position. His lead was short-lived though as Tracy Hines’s bright yellow #24 was noticeably the fastest midget on the speedway tonight blowing past Larson on lap four and then again pulling away from the field on a late restart for the dominating win. This would be Hines’ 13th career USAC victory at this track making him the new leader in that category. Larson would finish in the second spot with Kody Swanson third, Kyle Hamilton who won his first USAC National Midget race recently at the Grundy County Speedway in Illinois was impressive in the fourth spot while Clouser filled out the top five.
Eighteen Silver Crown cars would line up for the JD Byrider 100 with a fresh, but frustrated Bobby Santos III starting from the pole. Let’s just say that he took out his frustrations by kicking butt in this one lapping all the way up to the sixth-place car in a green-to-checkers 100-lap race that took just 36 minutes and 48 seconds to complete. Kody Swanson was nearly a half-lap back in second with Bobby East making the big move on the night coming from row five to finish third. Kyle Larson delivered another consistent run finishing in the fourth spot while Tanner Swanson rounded out the top five.
I was very impressed with the professional presentation of the Jegs CRA All Stars Tour event, especially with the young announcer who, unlike the Raceway Park veterans, knew that by announcing the starting lineup before the cars were circling the track it would allow the fans to actually hear who was driving what and who they were sponsored by. I must say that I knew absolutely nothing about this series coming into the evening, but I do know now that they have a large base of young drivers, and actually “very young” might be a better description as three of the 26 starters were just 14-years-old. Honestly, given the late hour, I normally would not have stayed since it was almost midnight by the time this 100-lapper took the green, but the fact that Ames, Iowa, driver Nate Caruth was in the field kept me in my seat along with a few others. At 18-years-old Caruth was one of the old codgers in this one and he started from the 16th position. Brent Downey would set the pace for the first twenty laps with Daniel Hemric breathing down his tailpipe. From Kannapolis, North Carolina, Hemric had won five of the eight races on the series in 2012 so it was no surprise when he relegated Downey to second on lap twenty-one. Kyle Benjamin raised some eyebrows back in February when the 14-year-old from North Carolina won a couple of races at New Smyrna Speedway and he soon moved to second in this one chasing Hemric. Benjamin was able to stay even with Hemric on a couple of double-file restarts, but each time Hemric was able to shake off the kid and he cruised in for the victory showing that the old guys (Hemric is 21) can still get it done. Michigan driver Chris Koslek started ninth and finished third, Colt James was fourth and Downey took fifth.
Young Kenzie Ruston of El Reno, Oklahoma, the first female to win a race in this series here in October of 2011, was up to third and challenging Benjamin for second late in the event, but got shuffled out of the top five on the last restart. Caruth, who has wheeled his Modified to many wins on the dirt tracks of the Midwest the past couple of years, was steady and finished ninth. With all of the young talent on display I will definitely pay attention to this series going forward.
Southern Iowa Sprint Speedweeks are just around the corner as the annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Nationals kicks off at the Knoxville Raceway next Thursday night with over one hundred drivers pre-entered. Hope to see you there!

Strickler Closes Door To High Side; Tickled To Win $1,000 At Osky
My car’s temperature readout showed 102 degrees as I pulled into the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds in Oskaloosa on Wednesday night and with the hot weather and it being the second night in a row of racing here it seemed like everybody was just dragging along trying to stay cool. Even track announcer Tony Paris, who is always incredibly upbeat and excited when he does the pre-race show on KBOE, sounded a little less so tonight as I listened to him on the way to town. He told fans that it was hot out here, there would be no blankets or sweatshirts needed and even though hot laps were set to start at seven o’clock, race fans might want to stay in the air conditioning as long as possible as long as they were there for the first race at 7:30.
I was amazed at how good the track looked considering that it had just been used extensively the night before in similar heat, but promoter Mike VanGenderen and his crew had obviously worked their tails off to provide another good surface. Car counts were down from the night before in four of the five classes, but with a little different mix of drivers in the Modified division looking for another $1,000 top prize we knew that we were in for another entertaining night.
The Sport Compacts were the first of five features on the card and once again the people primarily responsible for the division even racing here, Whalen Racing and Autocrafters, dominated. Dallas Chandler won again followed by Bill Whalen Jr. who passed Merv Chandler late for third, John Whalen finished fourth and Duayne Herb was fifth.
Ten of the eleven Hobby Stocks in attendance took the green in their feature event with Tuesday’s winner Dustin Griffiths securing the lead from his pole position start. Shannon Anderson had started seventh and was using the low line to work his way forward and on lap six he was challenging Kevin Fee for third. As they exited turn four Anderson drifted up the track and the two made contact with Fee’s car slamming the guardrail and flattening both rear tires. Officials penalized Anderson for rough driving and he also started from the rear along with Fee who still had some damage on the right front that would keep him from contending. Griffiths would continue to lead following the restart while Anderson quickly moved back toward the front. With two laps to go Anderson drove past Mike Hughes for second and perhaps still had a shot at the leader, but some slight contact right at the flagstand with Hughes cut down Anderson’s right rear tire and he slowed into turn one before pulling to the infield. Griffiths would go on to make it two in a row here at Osky with Hughes in second for the second night in a row, Donovan Nunnikhoven finished in the third spot followed by Danny Thrasher and Bobby Greene.
The Stock Cars were up next and, as they are known to do here, they put on a 16-lap feature full of two and three-wide action. “The Administrator” Nathan Wood (sorry Nathan, but you needed a nickname) would pace the field for the first five laps before the trio of Matt Greiner, Zack Vanderbeek and Colt Mather powered past. While those three battled it out for the lead, Wood, Damon Murty, Brad Pinkerton and Alex Buffington waged their own four-car battle close behind and the sweltering crowd had plenty of action to keep them entertained. Murty slipped off the back stretch with four laps to go and the caution waved setting up a dash to the finish. On the restart Vanderbeek slipped past Greiner for the lead, but Matt would fight back pulling even with Zack twice in the next three laps. Greiner drove hard into turn three on the final lap and drifted up the track trying to pull a slider, but when he saw that it would not be a clean one he held tight as Vanderbeek did not flinch and would beat Greiner to the line by a car-length for his second win in two nights. Mather was right there at the finish for third, Pinkerton took fourth and Wood edged out Buffington by a bumper for fifth.
The Modified headliner was up next with North Carolina visitor Kyle Strickler racing to the early lead and putting some distance on the rest of the field. The caution waved on lap number four when Devon Havlik spun on the exit of turn four. The young Havlik was making his first appearance here at Osky just a few days after winning his first career Modified feature at Stuart. On the restart Jacob Murray dove low into turn one and pulled even with Strickler for the lead. As the two raced wheel-to-wheel into turn three the caution waved again as a jumble mid-pack ended up with Ryan Cook and Havlik stopped on the back stretch.
When the green flag waved again Strickler showed that he is a quick study as he took away Murray’s line into turn one to maintain his lead. But as usual Jacob was fast here at Osky and on lap seven he moved by Strickler for the lead. Murray was on the fly and he was pulling away from the field until lap twelve when smoke billowed from his car as his powerplant expired bringing out the caution once again. Strickler assumed the lead on the restart and he now had company in Josh Most who was riding the high line around the speedway. Strickler who is known as “The High Side Tickler” was using a lower groove and with three laps to go Most showed him a nose exiting turn two. Just as it looked as though Most had a run that could pull him even with leader out of turn four, Strickler wisely moved up the track to close the door and break the momentum of Most. Josh tried to regroup for the final two laps, but the Carolina driver was using all the track that the race leader has a right to and he would soon celebrate heartily with his crew in victory lane. It was an impressive win for Strickler who I came to like while listening to his interview with Paris on the pre-race radio show and he told the crowd how proud he was to win a feature here in Iowa where the absolute best of drivers compete in the IMCA Modified division. Most always seems to put on a good show and he did again tonight finishing in second, Todd Shute came from a fifth row start to take third while track regulars Brandon Banks and Andrew Schroeder completed the top five. Defending Hawkeye Dirt Tour champion Mark Elliott was sixth and the eighteen-car field also included Jeremy Frenier of Colorado, David Murray from Kansas and Joe Haresky from Apple Valley, California.
The IMCA Sport Mods would close out the evening and when I saw that Jesse Sobbing had drawn a front row start it was pretty certain that this would be a race for second. Brett Lowry was actually closing a bit on the leader near the end, but there was no catching Sobbing who added to his bulging victory total in the division. Last night’s winner Curtis VanDerWal finished third followed by Ben Kates and Eric Flander.
Some vacation time and then work travel will likely keep me away from the track for the next week or so, but here’s hoping that you can get out to your favorite track soon……and then tell me what happened when I do return!

Long Puts A Whoopin' On Osky's Hawkeye Dirt Tour Field
Michael Long was in a class of his own Tuesday night as the Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds visited the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. Long established his dominance early by walking away from the field to win the first heat race by a full straightaway over Darin Duffy and, when he drew the number four starting spot for the twenty-five-lap main event, the smart money was all placed upon the Quincy, Illinois, driver.
Mike VanGenderen and Greg Cox were the front row starters, but they were no match for Long and current Tour point leader Richie Gustin who moved past them to run one-two on the opening lap. The first caution waved following the completion of the second lap when Fort Morgan, Colorado, driver Jeremy Fernier clipped the guardrail in turn two. The Delaware double-file restart produced two more cautions before the race could resume and on lap five the yellow flew again as Wade Francis stopped on the back stretch. Three laps later Jacob Murray stopped in turn four and on lap nine the sixth caution of the race waved due to debris on the track.
I had arranged to have a kid go up and steal the yellow one from Ryan Bergeson’s set by that point, but such a drastic move was not required as the race went back to green and stayed that way the rest of the distance. Luke Wanninger made a bid for the lead on the restart, but Long shook him off and then drove away to nearly a half of a lap advantage in what was nothing short of a good ol’ fashioned butt whipping. Wanninger would finish in the second spot ahead of Gustin in third, Jay Noteboom drove Joel Bushore’s #87 to fourth after starting 15th and VanGenderen rounded out the top five.
Wanninger was driving the 604 Crate engine that IMCA is experimenting with under live conditions. His #20 car included a 5-inch rear spoiler and had to meet a minimum weight of 2,350 pounds. Brett Root of IMCA told the drivers before the event that Wanninger would be competing as if he were any other entry, but that if he finished near the top the Tour Points would be adjusted and that IMCA would take care of the difference in purse. The sanctioning body is trying to determine the best rules package that would put the crate on an even playing field with others in an effort to reduce the cost to compete in the division going forward. When asked what this motor would sell for, Root responded with $5,300.

As the regular promoter here at Osky he then conducted the drivers meeting and directed the rest of the program for the four weekly divisions in action. And, as a regular competitor on the Hawkeye Dirt Tour, he raced his own #57V to a fourth-place finish in his heat and a fifth-place run in the feature. Then after all of that he went right back to work to prepare the track for another night of action tonight (Wednesday) where he will go back to “just” being the hard working first-year promoter here.
Along with the Colorado driver Fernier, North Carolina’s Kyle Strickler was in action and was on the fly in his heat race before the motor appeared to let go a lap after he took the lead. The crew had time to make changes and Strickler was able to run the feature event where he made his way up to tenth at the finish. Two large enclosed haulers who I was not able to identify parked out beyond the back stretch apparently content to just be spectators tonight.

Even though he has led the points for much of the season here, VanDerWal had not yet won a feature and he obviously wanted to change that opening up a sizeable advantage over the rest of the field. As the leader passed by the flagstand on lap six, the stud broke and sent his air cleaner sailing through the air. As the caution flew for the debris another car also lost a wheel in turn four and VanderWal now had a decision to make. Continue on and risk damage to the motor by sucking dirt down into it, or pull off and call it a night? He chose to continue and on the restart VanDerWal fought off a charge from Jesse Sobbing and then pulled away to the victory. Sobbing would chase him home for second, although he would have been done if the race was one lap longer as his right rear tire blew while taking the checkers. Brett Lowry took third, Wieben was fourth and Carter VanDenBerg came from the seventh row to finish fifth.

Damon Murty was impressive coming to the second spot from tenth, but by the time he got there Vanderbeek was in a different zip code. Corey Stout took third ahead of Jay Schmidt and Alex Buffington.
Whalen Racing and Autocrafters are the sponsors of the Sport Compact division here at the speedway and their drivers make up the bulk of the field each week. Tonight the Chandlers and Whalens swept the top five as Dallas Chandler took the win ahead of Bill Whalen Jr., Tyler Whalen, Merv Chandler and John Whalen.

Racing action continues tonight during the Southern Iowa Fair in Oskaloosa with Modifieds racing for $1,000-to-win and there will be extra money on the line as well for the Stock Cars, Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks. Hope to see you there!

Monday Notebook
After filling in for Sprint Invaders series announcer Bill Wright at Tipton Thursday night I did not do any more racing this past weekend. You will note that I did not write a recap of Thursday’s action as I have found that when I am announcing I don’t do a good job of taking notes and, in my advancing age, my memory does not kick in as well even the next morning. I don’t know how Ryan Clark does it so well as most of his reports are from events where he is on the microphone all night long, but even on Thursday when I shared the duties with track announcer Alysha Brown I am not able to come away with enough information to write a good blog entry the following day.
There was a nice field of twenty-four Invaders at Tipton on Thursday night and it looked as though Australian Jamie Veal would win going away until he slipped off the top of turn two on lap sixteen. Luck was with him at this point though as the caution was already waving for another car that had spun on the opposite end of the speedway. Matt Krieger had been on the move coming from twelfth to second and on the restart even he couldn’t match Veal’s pace, but a couple of laps later Veal again slipped off the top of turn two and Krieger appeared headed for the win. But it was not to be as his car faltered on a late restart allowing current series point leader Ryan Jamison to take the win.
A big thanks to Dave Beck for giving me a call as it was fun to have the opportunity to do some announcing again. And, at the risk of offending Rich Adams, I must say that it was the most attractive co-announcer that I have ever worked with. I look forward to getting back up to Tipton for a couple more nights as a spectator before the end of the season.
I had originally planned to go to Dubuque for the Deery Series event last night, but a non-racing opportunity presented itself that we could just not pass up. It sounds as though Luke Goedert was dominant in picking up the victory and for those of you outside of the Dubuque area saying to yourself “who?”, the young man out of Holy Cross is having a spectacular season. He has climbed up to sixth in the most recent update of the All Iowa Points that will be uploaded this week and he has obviously dialed in both Farley and Dubuque.
This week’s update of the All Iowa Modified Points will show that the top nine drivers are all within just 17 points of each other, so it is anybody’s race between Ryan Dolan, Richie Gustin, Mark Schulte, Jimmy Gustin, Dylan Smith, Brandon Davis, Cayden Carter, Chris Abelson and Ron Barker.
Luke Sathoff has been racking up the points lately and has climbed to third in the All Iowa Stock Car Points behind Damon Murty and Jerry Miles. With several mid-week fair races and special events coming up it is common to see drivers break away from the pack this time of year so we’ll see what will happen.
The first electronic entry of the Back Stretch was on December 5th of 2008 and over the past three and a half years I have found it interesting to watch the statistics that blogspot provides to see what draws readers and what does not. I have seen that a story on the World of Outlaws might only draw 50 page views, but a story on a weekly race in Vinton would draw over 400. Of course having the keyword of Gustin and some great photography from Scott Tjabring probably has a lot to do with that!
This past week my story on Tuesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series event at the West Liberty Raceway drew my highest one day count ever at 1,101 and this, along with some other highly viewed entries in July have me headed to the busiest month ever here at the Back Stretch and I want to thank each and every one of you that checks in here either once, or on a regular basis to see what is going on. As of today, here are the top ten viewed Back Stretch entries of “all time”.

Obviously pictures are very popular as the top four all have them, especially for those who are doing web searches. And why does a blog entry about a practice day at 34 Raceway get so many views over a two-year span? Could it be that the term “non-wing sprint car” is embedded within? Or could it be that Jeff Mueller is in there? After all, he is also pictured in the fourth place entry. Does everybody love Jeff Mueller???
