The Final NKF Tour (Part Two)

Too much snow on the ground into mid-March forced the March 23rd and 24th events scheduled for Allison and Webster City to be canceled so next up was a doubleheader in support of the Deery Brothers Summer Series at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines of Friday March 30th and a return to Webster City on the 31st.

I was really excited to work with promoter Mick Trier, a long time friend of mine who is still active today now promoting at the Independence Motor Speedway and the weather forecast was looking good for that Friday night show. However on the Monday before, Mick called me to deliver the bad news that the Iowa State Fair had been unable to turn on the water for the restrooms or the concession stands and therefore the race would have to be canceled.

Early morning rain and cold temperatures pushed the Webster City show to Sunday, so once again the Tour was fighting the weather to get started, but the show did go on and here is the story and results for the "northern opener".

Shryock and Lampe Walk Away With NKF Tour Wins at Webster City

Webster City, Iowa  – Two of his top competitors dropped out early, but Kelly Shryock probably didn’t need much help as he dominated the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature Sunday night at the Hamilton County Speedway. In Hobby Stock action, Jim Lampe of Carroll picked up the lead early and cruised to victory in the Tour’s 2001 opener for the division.

Rick Gustin took off from his outside pole position start and quickly opened a solid lead in the twenty-lap Modified main, but the smoke began to show on lap three and when the caution flag came out for an incident one lap later, Gustin pulled to the infield. Kevin Stoa assumed the lead for the restart with Shryock in hot pursuit as the field took the green. As Stoa tried to set his car for turn one he found that he had no steering and slammed hard into the turn one guardrail ending his night. Shryock took over from there and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way as he earned his fourth career NKF Tour feature win. Doug Hillson prevailed in an entertaining race for second followed by Wisconsin drivers Mike Wedelstadt and Ron Schreiner. Jim Lynch made a nice charge from the back of the field after an early mishap to finish fifth. Dan DeMay, Bruce Hanford and Gustin picked up wins in the Scott's’Quality Seeds qualifiers.

The first several laps of the NKF Hobby Stock main event looked like rush hour on a Friday evening in Atlanta with plenty of three and four-wide racing. Ahead of the pack Jim Lampe passed first lap leader Craig Roberts and left the field behind for the win. Mike Grantham finished in the runner-up spot with Kit Hovey, Damon Murty and defending NKF Tour champion Dan Hanselman completing the top five. Heat races went to Hanselman, Lampe, and Grantham

Both divisions return to action this weekend at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa, in support of the $5,000-to-win Deery Brothers Summer Series event for IMCA Late Models. The NKF Hobby Stocks will be in action on Friday night, April 6th, while the NKF Modifieds run on Saturday night, April 7th.

Here is what I had to say on the Back Stretch in Hawkeye Racing News

I got up early as planned on Saturday and was even twenty miles into my trip before the call came that the overnight rain and cold had postponed the Webster City event to Sunday. It’s too bad that so few people were on hand to witness the racing action at the Hamilton County Speedway on April 1st. No foolin’, the racing action was great on a track that, despite the rugged winter, was nearly in mid-season form. The three-car battle for the lead between Chris Smyser, Mike Smith and Mark Burgtorf in the Deery Brothers Summer Series headliner was thrilling enough to keep anybody warm on a chilly early spring evening. They ran three-wide down the backstretch on two occasions in front of the remaining snow piles that were removed from the track just three weeks ago. Plus, the trials and tribulations of Jeff Aikey provided the small crowd with plenty of drama. Aikey was a victim of a spin in front of him in his heat, returned to win the B-Main and then again got caught up in someone else’s mess early in the A. From there he charged up to fourth before a broken left front suspension ended his night just four laps from the finish. Smith, the defending series champion, earned the season opening victory. The racing action was also pretty good in the NKF Tour Modifieds and Hobby Stocks with Kelly Shryock and Jim Lampe taking wins. After busting his tail for three weeks to get the place ready, it’s a shame there wasn’t some more people there to see it. Al Uhrhammer deserved better.

From there it was on to 34 Raceway in Burlington for some more fun with the IMCA Late Model Summer Series

Hometown Drivers Darin Thye and Matt Krieger Earn NKF Tour Wins at 34 Raceway

Burlington, Iowa  – Darin Thye and Matt Krieger have both visited victory lane on several occasions at 34 Raceway where they compete on a weekly basis. On Saturday night both drivers prevailed over a solid field of drivers to earn their first victories on the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure, Thye in the Modifieds and Krieger in the Hobby Stocks.

Front row starters Michael Long and Mike Garland waged a thrilling battle throughout the first seven laps of the twenty-lap NKF Modified feature running side-by-side in the turns with Garland leading each lap by a nose at the stripe. On the eighth circuit Boone McLaughlin made dazzling move to go from third to first in turn two, but as he exited turn four apparently something broke as he veered up the track collecting Garland and bringing out the caution. Long inherited the lead on the restart, but it was short-lived as his right front tire went down in the first turn. John Bull took over from there until mechanical woes knocked him out of the race with four laps to go. Darin Thye, who had started tenth, was there to pick up the point and he drove away over the final laps for the victory. Tom Goble came from twelfth to finish second while Bob Dominacki worked his way to third from a tenth row start. Jim Roach came from the ninth row for fourth and Jeff Gerhardt completed the top five.

The fifteen-lap NKF Hobby Stock main event was equally exciting with John Oliver Jr. and Matt Krieger swapping the lead three times in the first five laps. With four laps to go Todd Holsteen charged to the front, but a flat tire two laps later ended his run putting Krieger’s “beautiful” #59 back in front for the win. Rod Miller challenged the leaders throughout and came home second followed by Ryan Meyer, Kirk Kinsley and Matt Strassheim. Kevin Riddle emerged uninjured from a nasty flip in turn one at the mid-race mark.

The NKF Tour Modifieds return to action this Friday night, April 13th, in support of the Budweiser Open Late Model Shootout at the Davenport Speedway. The next action for the NKF Tour Hobby Stocks will be on Wednesday, April 18th, along with the Tour Modifieds at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa.

Additions, Deletions and Make-Up Dates For NKF Tour Schedule

Mt. Pleasant IA – Some changes have been made to the 2001 National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure schedule.

The Modified and Hobby Stock event that was cancelled at the Hamilton County Speedway on March 24th has been re-scheduled for Saturday night April 21st at the half-mile oval in Webster City.

The Independence Motor Speedway has added two more dates to the 2001 NKF Tour schedule with events scheduled for Wednesday June 20th and Wednesday August 22nd. The Tour will run IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds as well as “track rules” Hobby Stocks in support of the new Indee Late Model Series. The NKF Tour will also be in Independence on Saturday September 1st as originally scheduled.

Finally, the NKF Tour event originally scheduled for Sunday September 2nd at the Benton County Speedway has been cancelled due to the fact that the track will be presenting its Season Championships on that night.

As I go through my documents to tell the story of the NKF Tour I come to the first draft of my resume on April 6th of 2000. That would help pinpoint the approximate date of this next story that I will now tell you in regard to the search for a title sponsor by XYZ. For those of you who missed the earlier chapters of this story, "XYZ" is what I am calling the Executive Director of the Iowa affiliate of the NKF for 2000 and 2001 as I choose not to give the actual name of this person.

XYZ had called me on a Monday in early April and asked if I could be in Cedar Rapids the next day to meet with a representative of US Cellular to answer the final questions that they had before agreeing to sponsor the Tour. I quickly accepted the invitation and the next morning I put on my suit and tie and headed north for a meeting that I had hoped would set the Tour up for not only 2001, but perhaps another year or two beyond.

XYZ had told me to come to the offices of the NKF for the meeting so I arrived ten minutes prior to the scheduled time. After waiting for about twenty minutes XYZ came out and said that we would be driving to US Cellular for the meeting, so I hopped into XYZ's car and I figured that we would be driving to a corporate office. Instead XYZ drove to a small retail location, similar to where you would go now to get signed up for service, I know this because I have always been a US Cellular customer, and we went in ready for the big meeting.

XYZ asked the young lady behind the counter if the person that we were scheduled to meet with was available and she replied that she didn't know who that was. XYZ walked out of earshot from me and made a brief call before we got back into the car and headed back to XYZ's office. As I recall I was given two or three different excuses of the missed connection during that short drive together, but the damage was done. There would be no corporate sponsor signed, not with XYZ at the helm. I needed to start looking for a job to take after the conclusion of the 2001 NKF Tour.

The sad part of this was that in this new age of the internet and its forum boards there was an Anonymous Weasel Poster, or AWP as former Sunset Speedway owner Craig Kelley had so accurately described them, that was claiming that myself and all of the promoters who had scheduled an event on the Tour were getting rich off the coat tails of the National Kidney Foundation. Little did "Gopher" know that at the time that he, she or it was making this argument the Tour was going to come to an end at the end of the 2001 schedule because I was likely going to lose money again at what had now become my full time job.

On a side note, think back to some of the most fervent AWP's and their quest to "better the sport by suggesting improvements". Weekly racing at Tipton, weekly racing at West Liberty, Hawkeye Raceway, Keith Simmons, these are just a few of the subjects who were most relevant to me that were hammered relentlessly by AWP's on forum boards. Doesn't seem to me that they accomplished their goal of bettering the sport, instead they just drove good people out of it. But I digress.....

Let's get back to racing now with the story and results from Davenport

Bull To The Top For NKF Tour Win At Davenport

Davenport, Iowa – John Bull found the outside groove to his liking Friday night using it for the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature win at the Davenport Speedway.

Rick Hixson used his pole position start to grab the early lead in the main event while Bull, who started sixth, quickly worked his way toward the front. Using the very top of the half-mile track, even slapping the wall on at least three occasions, Bull put the heat on Hixson and eventually eased into the lead on lap six. The event was red-flagged shortly after that as a multi-car melee on the backstretch severely damaged the cars of Rich Smith and Scott Megonigle. Thankfully both drivers walked away unhurt. When the race resumed Hixson was able to make a challenge pulling even with Bull in turn one with two laps to go. Ryan Dolan was also right there waiting for the leaders to make an error, but Bull was able to pull away on the final lap to earn his second career NKF Tour victory. Hixson finished second with Dolan third, while Bob Dominacki and defending Tour champion Ron Barker completed the top five.

The NKF Tour now has a busy week ahead with four Modified and Hobby Stock events in five nights. On Wednesday night, April 18th, the Tour will be at Oskaloosa, while the weekend schedule calls for a Friday night visit to Fairmont, Minnesota, a Saturday night show in Webster City and a Sunday night trip to Quincy, Illinois.

For the fourth year in a row the Southern Iowa Speedway would include the NKF Tour in their season opener

Nice Debut For Pinkerton; Buehneman By Inches In Osky NKF Tour Action

Oskaloosa, Iowa  – It was another typical night of racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway Wednesday. Great car counts, plenty of action, photo finishes and for the fourth year in a row the track hosted the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure during its season opener. Brad Pinkerton earned the feature win in his first full night of Modified racing while Scott Buehneman nipped Damon Murty by inches to win the Hobby Stock headliner.

The first half of the Heartland Tour Modified feature was full of excitement as front-row starters Pinkerton and Jim Lynch swapped the lead among themselves. Pinkerton had the advantage the first two laps, Lynch paced the third circuit, Pinkerton the fourth and Lynch the fifth and sixth. Rick Gustin had the best view of anyone as he was right on the tail of the two leaders looking for racing room. On lap seven Pinkerton, who has worked his way from Hobby Stocks to Stock Cars and now to Modifieds over the years, began to pull away. Gustin slipped by Lynch with three laps to go, but could not chase down the leader before the checkers. While it was his first full night in a Modified, Pinkerton is no stranger to open-wheeled cars as he drove a 360 Winged Sprint in Des Moines and Knoxville as well last season.

Rick VanDusseldorp held off the early challenges of Mike Grantham during the twelve-lap Heartland Tour Hobby Stock main event as looked to repeat his win during the 2000 opener at Osky. Grantham’s bid went up in smoke on lap five putting VanDusseldorp well in control. With four laps to go, and with Kris Walker closing fast, a flat tire sidelined VanDusseldorp and handed the lead over to Walker. As the leader came off of turn four to take the white flag he slowed suddenly with mechanical problems. Scott Buehneman and Damon Murty were already locked in a tight battle and now it was for the lead with one lap to go. As those two ran side-by-side into turn three Doug McCollough tried to make a charge on the high-side and they charged down the homestretch three-wide. At the finish line it was Buehneman by inches over Murty who defeated McCollough by a half car length for second.

Three dates in three states are on tap for both divisions of the NKF Tour this weekend with action Friday night in Fairmont, Minnesota, Saturday in Webster City, Iowa, and Sunday night in Quincy, Illinois.

Rain Forces Quick Fairmont Show; Hovey and Bosma NKF Tour Winners

Fairmont, Minnesota  – Opening night at the Fairmont Raceway began with tranquil weather and a large field of cars, but ended with a furious thunderstorm that washed out the final portion of the Modified feature. With the show moving along at a lightning-quick pace, Kit Hovey of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Mike Bosma of Harris, Iowa, earned checkered flags during the NKF Heartland Tour action.

Hovey struggled to crack the top four in the second Hobby Stock heat race, but a final lap pass allowed him to participate in the re-draw that put him on the front row of the main event. From there the Iowa visitor had to hold back the persistent challenges of Jeremy Smith to take his first NKF Tour Hobby Stock victory. Another Tour traveler, Mike Grantham, came home in the third spot followed by Tim Sidles and Doug Jenkins.

The NKF Modified feature took to the track under threatening skies and took the green with lightning flashing all around. Mike Bosma jumped to the early lead with Kevin Pospisil and Roger Nielsen in hot pursuit. Rain began to fall lightly on lap two and by the seventh lap Mother Nature cut loose bringing the evening to an abrupt end. Due to the fact that several of the 36 Modified drivers on hand were not track regulars and would not be able to return next week, promoter Joe Ringsdorf decided to call the race complete at that point with Bosma taking the win. Nielsen, Pospisil, Jim Richert and Mike Hejna completed the top five.

Mills and Zehr Cash In On NKF Tour Make-Up Event At Hamilton County

Webster City, Iowa  – Jeremy Mills and Jeff Zehr captured feature wins as the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure returned to the Hamilton County Speedway Saturday night to make-up an event lost to the weather in late March.

Survival was the key in the twenty-lap Modified main event with several top contenders dropping by the wayside. Greg Elliott and Jimmy Gustin started on the front row with Elliott snaring the lead at the drop of the green. As those two slugged it out up front, a couple of drivers were making thrilling charges toward the front. Rick Gustin started twenty-fifth and was up to fourth before mechanical problems knocked him out. Corey Dripps had come form sixteenth to fifth only to have a left rear tire go flat on him mid-race. Dean Mahlstedt was running third and closing on Elliott and Jimmy Gustin when his car locked up and then, on lap eleven, Eliiott’s lead car dropped out with mechanical problems. Jeremy Mills, who had steadily worked his way up from the sixth row, found his way around Gustin on a lap fifteen restart and cruised to the win. Jimmy Gustin was the runner-up followed by Max Dunlap, Mark Elliott and Duane VanDeest.

Zehr started the Hobby Stock finale from the pole and had to hold off the challenges of Roger Caquelin to earn his fourth career NKF Tour feature victory. This puts Zehr into a tie for second on the Tour’s all-time win list behind Steve Holthaus who has five victories. Caquelin was a strong second followed by Allen Dixon, Bill Richards and Doug McCollough.

Karhoff and Dieker Victorious In First NKF Tour Visit To Quincy

Quincy, Illinois  – Two drivers who know their way around the quick quarter-mile picked up feature wins as the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour made its first-ever visit to the Quincy Raceway Sunday night. Mike Karhoff made a late pass to secure the Modified win while Eddie Dieker held off his teammate for the night to capture the Hobby Stock laurels.

Front row starters Vance Wilson and Darin Thye battled it out for the top spot for the early portion of the twenty-lap NKF Tour Modified headliner with Wilson able to put himself out front by lap six. Micahel Long was able to get to second and he, along with Thye, closed in on the leader mid-race, but mechanical woes sidelined Long before he could see the top spot. Mike Karhoff’s car found the bite in the late stages as he moved into second and when Wilson bobbled in turn four coming for the white flag, Karhoff was there to snare the lead and the win. Wilson held on for second while Ryan Meyer nipped Thye for third. Terry Schlipman, driving Chuck Ancell’s car, came home fifth.

Dieker assumed the lead at the drop of the green in the Hobby Stock finale with David Wietholder in hot pursuit. Dieker, who was driving Wietholder’s car from last season, withstood the challenges from his teammate and they took the checkers one-two for a very successful evening. Clint Kirkham was a close third followed by Bill Genenbacher and Bobby Uppinghouse.

The NKF Tour Hobby Stocks will be at the Stuart Speedway on Tuesday, May 1st, while the next action for the Tour’s Modifieds will come on Saturday, May 5th, at the Adrian Speedway.
