Heading down the home stretch of the second year for the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure our next event was a first time visit to the Algona Raceway for a night at the Kossuth County Fair. By the way if you are ever at a trivia contest and they ask what the largest county in Iowa is by land mass, the answer is Kossuth. I helped my team score ten points recently for knowing the answer to that one after mapping out my first visit to the track in Algona as well.
This one is from a few years before Bruce Hanford won the 1999 NKF Tour title as he races to the inside of Scott Olson at Dubuque |
It was also my first experience in working with promoter Joe Ringsdorf who put out some extra motivation for his local drivers to beat the Tour travelers. If one of his track regulars would win the main event in either the Modifieds or the Hobby Stocks, Joe himself would donate $100 in the name of the winning driver to the National Kidney Foundation in the "Algona Raceway Challenge". A very classy move by a man who was always a pleasure to work with.
The Modified feature was a thriller with the legendary Mark Noble coming from the back of the pack to make the winning pass exiting turn four on the final lap.
Last Lap Heroics For Noble; Monson Survives For NKF Tour Victories At Algona
Algona, Iowa – A large Kossuth County Fair crowd went away buzzing with excitement Thursday night after Mark Noble chased down Ron Pope and passed him coming off of turn four to win the Toyota National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified main event at the Algona Raceway. In earlier action, Shane Monson of Clear Lake picked up the lead mid-race and held on for the NKF Tour Hobby Stock win.
Dave Nutt raced to the early lead in the twenty-five lap Modified headliner before Ron Pope worked his way forward from a third row start to take the lead on lap seven. Mark Noble was running fifth early in the race, but spun into the infield on a restart and fell to the rear of the twenty-car field. The Minnesota Modified star did not stay there long though, working the cushion of the 3/8th-mile oval to perfection. With two laps to go he had chased down Pope and on the final lap the two leaders were wheel-to-wheel down the backstretch and in to turn three. Noble found just enough bite on the top-side to nose ahead of Pope by inches at the stripe for the win. Nutt survived a spirited challenge from Bruce Hanford to finish third while Tim Folkerts completed the top five.
Numerous spins, bumps and a pair of black flags whittled the twenty-four car Hobby Stock field down to just eleven finishers. Scott Anderson paced the field for the first few laps of the contest before he was taken out by another competitor in turn one. Shane Monson then inherited the lead and held off all challenges from Brad Bakken to take the win. Bakken was the runner-up followed by Jim Mitchell, Randy Hadacek and Kit Hovey.

Zehr Makes Quick Work Of Webster City NKF Field
Webster City, Iowa – Jeff Zehr of Manson used a nifty move on the first lap to grab the lead and then cruised to the Toyota National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Hobby Stock feature win at the Hamilton County Speedway Thursday night.
Zehr started the fifteen-lap feature on the outside of the second row and slipped by front row starters Bobby Schaffer and Rodney Slagle coming off turn four for the first circuit. After that it was only a matter of whether or not Zehr’s car would make it to the finish as it began to smoke mid-race. Slagle maintained the second spot throughout the event holding off persistent challenges from NKF Tour point contenders Jim Mitchell and Dan Hanselman. On the final lap, Michael Henely and Shane Monson made strong moves to finish third and fourth ahead of Mitchell.

Before we get to the Tour's first ever trip out of the state of Iowa I want to make sure to recognize the Contingency Sponsors for the sophomore season of the NKF Tour. Each sponsor sent a check for $100 that went directly into the Attendance Fund in 1999, plus they awarded product certificates at each event. As the drivers signed in each race night they were given a sheet with all of the information for the night such as this one for our race at the Mercer County Raceway in Aledo, Illinois.
It was a pretty good night of racing as you will see from the story and results below, but it was an even better night on the grandstand side.
Dripps Returns To Victory Lane; Hamann Finds It For The First Time In NKF Tour Illinois Trip
Aledo, Illinois – Corey Dripps of Cedar Falls, Iowa, dominated the National Kidney Foundation’s inaugural Heartland Tour for a Cure in 1998 winning four times and clinching the point title with two races still on the schedule. The 1999 season has not been as kind to the young speedster, but he may have returned to form Sunday night with a convincing Modified feature win in his first ever visit to the Mercer County Raceway here Sunday night. In NKF Tour Hobby Stock action, Josh Hamann of Eldridge, Iowa, slipped past Tour point leader Rod Miller on lap one and never looked back to pick up his first-ever feature win anywhere.
Hometown driver, Leroy Brenner, is hard to beat at Aledo no matter where he starts from and when he drew the pole position for the twenty-lap Modified feature many people may have thought that it would be a race for second. Brenner was strong from the start, as expected, but Corey Dripps kept pace from his fourth starting spot and began to work the high side of the quarter-mile oval. At the mid-race point Dripps eased past Brenner and then handled some slower traffic late in the race to pick up his fifth career NKF Tour Modified victory, a total that easily tops the list. Brenner held off a challenge from John Bull to finish second while Darin Thye and John Irwin completed the top five.
NKF Tour Hobby Stock point leader Rod Miller charged to the point of the feature field on the backstretch of the first lap, but when he drifted high in turn four pole-sitter Josh Hamann regained the top spot. Mark Specht kept the heat on Hamann the entire distance, but there was no denying Hamann as he shook his fist in triumph after taking his first feature race checkered flag. Specht held off Donovan Lodge to finish second. There was a race within the race as all three of the top drivers in the NKF Tour point standings made long pulls to Aledo and at one point, Rod Miller, Jim Mitchell and Blaire Benzing were running three-wide for the fourth spot. At the finish it was Benzing, who had started nineteenth, nipping Miller by a nose for fourth, while Mitchell ended up with a ninth place finish.
The Toyota NKF Tour’s next action will be on Labor Day weekend in support of the Annual Pepsi USA Late Model Nationals at 34 Raceway. The Hobby Stocks will run a full program on Saturday night, while the Modifieds will have a complete show on Sunday night.

David and Wendy Hildebrandt were two of the volunteers selling the 50/50 Raffle tickets at Aledo and the fact that David was a Dialysis patient at Genesis East in the Quad Cities inspired others that Sunday evening.
Aledo Racers and Fans Support The National Kidney Foundation
Aledo, Illinois – The National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure presented by Toyota made its first-ever trip out of the state of Iowa Sunday night and it was greeted by a generous group of racers and fans at the Mercer County Raceway in Aledo, Illinois.
Corey Dripps of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Josh Hamann of Eldridge, Iowa, were the Tour’s feature winners on the quarter-mile dirt track, but it was the Foundation itself was the winner on this night. The evening started out with the pit crews for hometown driver Leroy Brenner’s Pro Stock and Modified taking up a collection among themselves and donating $30 to the NKF. Brenner’s crew issued a challenge to others and soon Harv Smith, the owner of John Bull’s Pro Stock, and his crew raised $32 and gave it to the NKF.
During the intermission, Modified driver Ron Fare notified Tour officials that he would be donating his winnings for the night in memory of his father and an aunt who had died due to kidney disease. This was followed by the American Legion Falleran’s Post 121’s presentation of a check for $200 to the National Kidney Foundation. It was then time to draw for the NKF’s fifty-fifty raffle and the winner, Joe A. Jackson of Joy, Illinois, donated the entire $198 prize back to the Foundation in respect to dialysis patient Robert Raider.
“The support of the drivers, crews and fans at the Mercer County Raceway was incredible,” commented NKF Tour Director Jeff Broeg on Monday morning. “Thank you to promoters Brad Montgomery and Steve Williams, and everybody who participated in the event. It was a beautiful evening of racing for a great cause.” NKF Tour tee-shirts and sweatshirts were also a hot commodity at Aledo and after everything was tallied up the Foundation raised nearly $1,000 to assist dialysis patients in the Quad Cities area.
Next up was a Labor Day weekend treat for the NKF Tour as the Hobby Stocks would race on Saturday and the Modifieds on Sunday during the Pepsi USA Nationals at 34 Raceway west of Burlington. After not getting a show booked at what I consider to be my "home track" during the first year of the Tour, I was very appreciative that track owner Johnny Johnson welcomed in the NKF Tour as part of his biggest event of the year!
I had known Johnny for a long time and had announced for him often during special events at 34 Raceway, but when it came time to propose holding an NKF Tour event at the track it was not an easy task. I remember his promoter Ron Jackson calling me and saying that Johnny would like to meet with me and wondered if I could come to the offices of J&J Steel in West Burlington. I quickly agreed and I excitedly gathered together all of the supporting information that I could in hope of convincing Johnny that holding one or more tour events would be the thing to do.
Johnny Johnson was a smart, hard nosed businessman whose success was obvious and I soon found out just how good he was at taking control of a meeting. After a brief greeting Johnny then went on for several minutes listing every reason why a race track promoter would NOT want to host an NKF Tour event and I could feel myself sinking in my chair just wanting to head for the door and get the hell out of there. When he finished with that list though, he then mentioned a couple of people that he knew who were fighting kidney disease and to support them he would go ahead and book us in, but under his terms. The 50/50 raffle would not be conducted by our people and instead he would write a check to the Foundation for at least the amount that went to the raffle winners each night.
As I left his office I had felt like I had been beat up, but I had a race booked and we would continue to have events scheduled at 34 Raceway over the next two years. I would also like to think that in that list of reasons that Johnny gave me for why he would never hold a Tour race, I made some changes along the way that eliminated at least one or two of those reasons.
Dripps Last To Arrive, First To Finish; Breuer Cruises In NKF Tour Events At 34 Raceway
Burlington, Iowa – When Corey Dripps woke up on Sunday morning he had absolutely no idea that he would be standing in victory lane at 34 Raceway Sunday night after the National Kidney Foundation’s Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature. It’s not that the young Cedar Falls, Iowa, driver isn’t confident, it’s just that he had originally planned to be racing in Des Moines that evening. But when he found out that his car would not be legal, the team loaded up and scrambled to make the three-hour pull to Burlington where the Tour was running in support of the Pepsi USA Late Model Nationals, arriving just in time for the qualifying heats.
After the forty-six car field was whittled to twenty-four, Jim Willert snared the early lead in the twenty-lap main event. Leroy Brenner kept the heat on Willert and made the pass for the lead on lap three. In the meantime, Dripps was quickly working his way toward the front using the high groove on the high-banked 3/8th-mile oval and, along with Bruce Hanford, he made it a three-car battle for the lead. Dripps was able to make the pass just past the mid-race mark and put just enough distance on the field to ease to victory. Hanford got by Brenner in the final laps to take second and re-claim the NKF Tour point lead as Tim Folkerts struggled to a seventeenth place finish. Brenner finished third with Willert fourth and Vance Wilson fifth.
The Toyota NKF Tour Hobby Stocks put on a full show on Saturday night with Dave Breuer of Burlington dominating the twenty-four car field for the win at his home track. Jody Dodson ran an impressive second followed by Todd Holsteen, Cory Richards and Matt Strassheim.
The NKF Tour returns to the southeast corner of Iowa on Saturday night, September 11th, as the Modifieds and Hobby Stocks will run in support of the Deery Brothers Late Model Summer Series race at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.

The September 11th trip to the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson was actually the rescheduled race that was rained out from April and it served as an important night in both point races.
Point Leaders Face-off In Modifieds; Breuer Takes Second Straight NKF Tour Hobby Stock Win
Donnellson, Iowa – The battle for the top spot in the Toyota National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure continued in both divisions Saturday night at the Lee County Speedway as Tim Folkerts of Albia and Dave Breuer of Burlington picked up feature wins.
Current Tour point leader Bruce Hanford jetted to the first lap lead from his fourth starting spot in the twenty-lap Modified main event. Tim Folkerts, who came into the event trailing Hanford by twenty-four points, picked up the pace and moved to the front on the third circuit. Hanford kept the pressure on working the inside line and re-gained the lead on lap eight. The only caution of the race occurred on lap thirteen and on the restart Folkerts’ high line was quicker as he grabbed the lead and pulled away over the final seven laps to take the win, his third on the 1999 Tour. Mark Burgtorf slipped by Hanford late in the race to claim second with John Bull and Matt Stalder completing the top five. The final results cut Hanford’s point lead to fourteen markers over Folkerts with three events remaining.
Doak Allen Jr. paced the first four laps of the Hobby Stock main event before Dave Breuer moved past on lap five. Breuer opened up a comfortable lead over the next few laps before Allen came back to make a late challenge for the lead. Breuer was able to hold on though, winning his second straight NKF Tour Hobby Stock feature event. Allen was the runner-up followed by Tim Tucker, Tim Bradley and Jerry Bliesener. The top three point contenders on the Tour, Rod Miller, Blaire Benzing and Jim Mitchell, battled it out amongst themselves mid-pack with point leader Miller prevailing in the “race within the race” by finishing seventh.
The NKF Tour now takes a couple of weekends off before a big doubleheader on the first weekend of October. On Saturday, October 2nd, the Modifieds and Hobby Stocks will be a part of the annual Hawkeyeland Championship event at the Tipton Speedway. Then on Sunday afternoon, October 3rd, the Modifieds will be featured in the annual Gary Reinhart Memorial event at Hawkeye Raceway in Blue Grass, with the NKF Tour Hobby Stocks also on the card.

In just our second year the NKF Tour was now being featured in some of the biggest traditional events in the area with a big doubleheader coming during the first week in October. And then to close out this sophomore season of the NKF Tour, who would have known that what we thought would be a one-time gimmick race would turn into one of the longest running end of year specials in the Midwest!
“Grand” Weekend Coming Up For NKF Tour
Mount Pleasant, Iowa – The first weekend in October will be “grand” for the Toyota National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modifieds with two races each paying $1,000 to win on the schedule.
On Saturday night, October 2nd, the NKF Tour will be a part of the annual Hawkeyeland Championship event at the Tipton Speedway in Tipton. The Modifieds will be looking for the $1,000 top prize while the NKF Tour Hobby Stocks will also be on the card with $250 going to the winner. The action moves to Hawkeye Raceway near Blue Grass on Sunday afternoon, October 3rd, for the Eighth Annual Gary Reinhart Memorial event. The Tour Modifieds will be looking for the $1,000 winner’s paycheck while the Hobby Stocks will also be in action.
All of the top point contenders in both NKF Tour divisions will be among a strong field of cars expected during this weekend doubleheader. In the Modifieds look for current point leader Bruce Hanford of Davenport, along with Tim Folkerts of Albia, Corey Dripps of Cedar Falls, John Bull of Rock Island, Illinois, Max Dunlap of Zearing, Casey Schram of Sterling, Illinois, Jim Willert of Davenport, Russ Olson of Cedar Rapids, Darin Thye of Burlington and many more. Rod Miller of Eldon, Blaire Benzing of Waterville and Jim Mitchell of Webster City are locked in a tight race for the top of the Hobby Stock point standings and they will continue their battle along with a talented group of eastern Iowa and western Illinois drivers.
Folkerts and Benzing Set Up Showdowns For Championships With NKF Tour Wins At Tipton
Tipton, Iowa – Two drivers who entered the evening ranked second in the Toyota National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure point standings found themselves in victory lane at the end of the night at the Tipton Speedway’s annual Hawkeyeland Championship. Tim Folkerts of Albia topped a talented field of seventy Modifieds, while Blaire Benzing of Waterville was the class of a forty-two-car Hobby Stock roster.
Folkerts started third in the twenty-five-lap Modified main event and it only took him a lap and a half to speed by pole-sitter Robbie Verbeck for the lead. Bruce Hanford, who came into the night with the NKF Tour point lead, quickly moved into second and tried to keep pace with Folkerts. There was no catching the southeast Iowa hotshoe though as he notched his second straight victory on the Tour. A couple of late restarts hurt Hanford’s finish as he faded to fifth late in the race behind Jeff Morris, Verbeck and Megonigle dropping him six points behind Folkerts with one race to go on the 1999 Tour. The checkered flag waved too soon for Morris who had started fifteenth and Megonigle who came from seventeenth.
Benzing used a front row start to take the early lead in the twenty-lap Hobby Stock main, but when he and Corey Hallahan made a little contact in turn one on the ninth lap, Cliff Gray took advantage to pick up the lead. Benzing recovered quickly and squeezed back around Gary three laps later. Gray made one last bid on the outside coming off turn four for the checkers, but Benzing held him off by half-a-car-length for the victory. The win pulls the Waterville, Iowa, driver to within twenty-six points of NKF Tour point leader Rod Miller with one event remaining. Gray was the runner-up with Hallahan, Laverne Carey and Davey Elliott completing the top five.
The 1999 NKF Heartland Tour for a Cure presented by Toyota will conclude on Saturday, October 23rd, with the Millennium Grand Finale at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.

There were seventy, count 'em seventy Modifieds in the pits at Tipton along with forty-two Hobby Stocks on that Saturday night and we were all set to do it again the following day. Unfortunately though cold and rainy weather would settle in overnight and the Sunday afternoon race at Hawkeye Raceway would be rained out. The Reinhart Memorial would be rescheduled for two weeks later, but due to other commitments on my part it would not be run as part of the NKF Tour.
So that now brings us to the final race of the 1999 NKF Tour and as most of you over the age of thirty will recall there were some pretty big concerns about how computers would handle rolling over to the year 2000. Promoters Terry and Jenni Hoenig, and myself decided to have a little fun with the "scare" and schedule an event that we would call "The Millennium Grand Finale" and while I apologize for the small font size you can see in the Newsletter below how we described this event to the drivers as well as what we were looking ahead to in 2000.......assuming of course that we would all survive the Y2K bug.
In addition I composed the following for the NKF of Iowa to use in their search for title sponsorship in 2020. Remember that when the Tour was originally founded it was agreed upon that the NKF of Iowa would have the sole responsibility of pursuing and acquiring title sponsorship for the Tour as they wanted to make sure that it was a corporation, or corporations that would fit their criteria. I was to have absolutely nothing to do with that pursuit, but obviously I wanted to do everything that I could to provide them with the information that they needed to be successful in the search.
I knew that my brother-in-law Loni was no longer on the NKF of Iowa Board of Directors and that he had moved from Cedar Rapids to Oklahoma for a new job so I was not optimistic about retaining Toyota as a title sponsor. After all it was the Industrial Lifts division of Toyota that had provided the sponsorship dollars over the past two years, so even though we were pushing the Toyota name as if it were the cars and trucks, it was the relationship with Hupp Electric Motors with Loni there as an employee that secured the sponsorship.
At the end of its second year the NKF Tour by all appearances was riding high and headed for a bright future. I was cautiously optimistic, but I now had no close connection and no control in regard to what the Tour needed the most, a title sponsor.
So that brings us to The Millennium Grand Finale held on Saturday October 23rd at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. My wife will tell you that no matter what the weather is, if I am going to a race I will always say "it's a beautiful day for racing!" Not so on this day as the clouds were low, dark and thick with spritzes of rain falling from time to time. Never enough to rain things out though, so we pushed on and to our surprise an impressive number of drivers signed in. In the two NKF Tour classes there were forty-six Modifieds and thirty-six Hobby Stocks, plus for your trivia buffs the first car to lineup at the pit gate that afternoon was a red #6 Late Model to be driven that night by Carl Edwards Sr.
Several kids came out dressed in costume and ready to do some trick-or-treating with the drivers after the races, but when the final checkers fell around 9:30 only a few of them had stuck it out to make their way through the pits and fill their bags. We would fix that in the future.
The NKF Tour point championships came down to the final laps as the "race within the race" and in the end both drivers coming into the night in second place would do what they needed to in order to get to the top and become an NKF Tour champion!
Burgtorf and Oliver Wrap Up The Millennium With Victories; Hanford and Benzing Come From Behind For NKF Tour Titles
Donnellson, Iowa – Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Illinois, and John Oliver of West Burlington picked up feature wins on a chilly night during the Millennium Grand Finale event at the Lee County Speedway Saturday, but many eyes were riveted to the “race within the race” going on behind them. Both of the Toyota National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure point leaders, Tim Folkerts and Rod Miller, experienced misfortune during their feature events that helped Bruce Hanford and Blaire Benzing to come from behind for the 1999 Tour titles.
In the Modified feature Mark Burgtorf moved to the front quickly in the Verl Gordy owned #69 coming from the second row to take the lead on lap one. The 1999 Lee County Speedway track champion was never seriously challenged throughout the twenty laps picking up the $500 victory. The drama behind him was intense however as Tim Folkerts tried to make his way to the front from the fourteenth starting spot to preserve his six-point lead over Bruce Hanford in the final race of the ’99 NKF Tour. As the field took the white flag Hanford was running fourth followed closely by Darin Thye and Folkerts with Tim needing to get around Thye on the final lap to take the title by just a point. Two cars were battling side-by-side for seventh just behind them and when the pack entered turn one, Folkerts ended up sideways near the guardrail, bringing out the caution and ending his title hopes. On the green-white-checkered restart Vance Wilson held off Corey Dripps to finish second while Darin Thye eased past Hanford to take fifth. The $2,500 Tour championship for Hanford follows a runner-up finish in the 1998 title chase.
Rod Miller entered the Hobby Stock feature with a twenty-six-point advantage over Blaire Benzing and for the first half of the race Miller stayed glued to Benzing’s bumper as they picked their way to the front from a mid-pack start. Shawn Whiting paced the field early before John Oliver slipped past for the lead and just as that happened Miller’s car began to slow with mechanical problems. With Miller retiring to the infield Benzing needed to finish sixth to tie, and fifth or better to win the championship and in the final laps he moved from sixth to fourth to finish behind Oliver, Whiting and Bobby Greene. Harley Hill rounded out the top five as Benzing collected the $1,200 NKF Tour Hobby Stock championship.

As the night went on the temperatures dropped in to the upper 30's and the wind steadily increased. I had gathered with Terry and several of his staff in the pit office building having a beer and talking about whether or not we would want to do this again next year. Terry had just said, "well, if we have this show again we will to come up with a new name for it," and just as he was finishing his sentence his wife Jenni came through the door and said. "Well that was a real shiverfest!"
And just like that, one of the most unique and anticipated events in the Midwest for twenty-two years and going now had a name.
The 1999 NKF Heartland Tour for a Cure was now complete and hopefully this blogger software will not butcher these perfectly aligned spreadsheets as I copy and paste both the summary and final point standings for each division.
