With last weekend's Late Model special at the Mount Pleasant Speedway, the 2024 racing season has come to a close and it was at that final event where one of the four state championships was determined using our standard 5-point scale for all feature events. This is our ninth year of tracking the events in Michigan and it will be the first time that the Crate Late Model class was included in the Late Model points and, for the first time, we will have a Limited Modified champion even though the class only competes at one track in the state.
The Modifieds came down to that final race of the year and, with his second place finish at Mount Pleasant, Austin Harnick slipped past defending champion Myron DeYoung to secure his first state title. The champion picked up eleven wins in twenty-five tp five finishes to be two points better than DeYoung who was a seven time feature winner in twenty-seven top fives. Harnick, who finished 23rd in the 2023 Late Model standings, switched over to the Modifieds late last season. After leading the standings through the first half of the season, Jeff Reay takes the third spot in the final tally winning four times in twenty-four top fives. It was a big improvement for Reay who ranked 17th last year.
Travis Stemler returned to the top of the Late Model standings to score his second Michigan Points championship on the strength of eight wins in twenty-six top five efforts. His first title came in 2020 and the Ionia based driver finished in a three-way tie for eighth last season. After joining the podium in third last year, Greg Gokey improves one position in 2024 taking nine feature wins in twenty top fives while two-time champion Eric Spangler settles in for third. The champion in both 2017 and 2022, Spangler scored four feature wins in eighteen top fives during this campaign.
We have a first time champion in the Winged Sprint Cars as Keith Sheffer Jr. moves to the top of the list picking up three feature wins in fourteen top five finishes. Sheffer finished third in the 2023 standings. Two-time champion Max Stambaugh (2021-22) takes the runner-up honors this year with four wins among his twelve top five efforts and Van Gurley Jr. settles in for third with two victories in his twelve top fives. It was a big jump up the list for the Indiana driver who scored just three points in Michigan last season.
Finally, in order to make sure they are getting their full points in our Best of the Midwest standings that we compile at the end of the year, we tracked the Limited Modified division division that races at the Escanaba Speedway in the Upper Peninsula and the champion is Matt Valiquette who won three times in eight top fives.
