Iowa & Missouri Points Update; Shiverfest Thoughts

Our webmistress Sue has been busy this week, but soon she should have up the latest update of the All Iowa and All Missouri Points at Positively Racing.

When I heard last week that Memphis MO was planning to run a show on Sunday October 24th I started looking at the All Iowa points to see what divisions would still be up for grabs with two shows left; Shiverfest on Saturday and Memphis on Sunday. The answer? Three. Modifieds, Limited Modifieds and Hobby Stocks. But now, with the Sunday show at Memphis pulled off of the schedule only one divisional title remains up for grabs as Shiverfest completes the Iowa racing season.

All Iowa Points

Late Models - Ray Guss Jr. clinched this thing back in May it seems like. Will anybody ever have such a dominating season in this class again? I have him for 26 feature wins as part of 60 top five finishes. Amazing! LateModelRacer.com had Guss rated on top when the Iowa standings were originally posted, but after further review Chad Simpson tookover the top spot.

Modifieds - Michael Long won two features at Memphis last weekend, while Ryan Dolan won one at West Liberty. The spread is now 10 points between the two and it would have taken two more wins this coming weekend by Long, and no top five for Dolan, to produce a tie, but now with only one show left Dolan will win his first-ever All Iowa Points title.

Limited Mods - Jesse Sobbing holds a 7-point lead over both Austin Kaplan and Cayden Carter. Carter had an opportunity to get as many as 10 points on tracks that he is very familiar with, but now even a win at Shiverfest will leave him two points shy of Sobbing who will take the state title.

Stock Cars - Dustin Smith wins it for the third year in a row.

Hobby Stocks - This is the one division that is still in play with Devin Smith leading Dustin Larson by just one point. Smith lives in northwest Iowa and Larson is from south central Minnesota, so chances are that neither will attend the final points race of the year here in the southeast corner of Iowa. Looks like Devin will become the third Smith brother to earn an All Iowa Points title as Donavon won the Hobby Stock championship in 2006.

Four Cylinder - Nate Coopman holds a 30-point lead and will repeat his title.

410 Sprints - Mark Dobmeier is a champion once again, his fourth title in the last five years.

360 Sprints - This one will end in a tie, the first tie ever in the All Iowa points compiled since 1967, as Eric Lutz and Jack Dover have the same leading point total.

305 Sprints - Casey Friederichsen wins this one by the three points that he earned on the final night of racing at Jackson Speedway

All Missouri Points

Still a few events on the schedule here as Valley Speedway runs this Saturday night, Butler Speedway runs on Sunday afternoon and the Thanksgiving weekend event at Springfield Raceway closes out the season.

Late Models - With two shows remaining (Butler and Springfield), defending champ Donnie Timmerman needs two wins to repeat, or a win and a second to tie current leader Larry Jones. Of course this assumes that Jones does not run in the top five at either event. One fourth-place finish, or two fifths will clinch the championship for Jones.

Modifieds - I'm still trying to chase down results from Callaway Raceway after 9/17 that could change this, but as of now Jesse Stovall owns a three point advantage over Jason Russell (who would benefit most from the missing Callaway results), a six point lead over Rusty Griffaw and a ten point lead over Jackie Dalton. Dalton has won the last two weeks at Butler and is no stranger to Springfield so two more wins and we would be looking at another tie, unless Stovall gets back in the Modified again. He has won a couple of Late Model shows recently driving for Steve Rushin.

Limited Mods - Brad Smith trails Colt Cheevers by 13 points and would need at least a win and two second-place finishes over these last three races to repeat his title. Of course Cheevers could lock it up with a top-five finish or two of his own.

Sprints - Jonathan Cornell will edge out both Josh Fisher and Randy Martin by just one point.

Crates/Limited Late Models - With 16 feature wins on the season it is all Vance Wilson.

Now I spend most of my time checking the different weather sites hoping for a favorable forecast for this Saturday's Shiverfest at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. Yes, there is a chance of showers, but no it does not look like an all-day rain event. So hopefully the show will go on as scheduled and don't forget about Practice Night and the Pit Party on Friday!

Wouldn't you know it, come Friday we will have gone 20 straight days without receiving any measurable precipitation. Is Mother Nature trying to tells us something about this event?

Hope to see you in Donnellson this weekend!
