A few thoughts before I throw another three states worth of Dirt Late Model points at ya. Only a few more to go and I'll be done for 2011. I'm a stats geek, I know it, but there must be several others out there as a couple of the 2010 Late Model state points standing pages were among the highest viewed over the past year. Some other stat geeks include our own Ryan Clark, Steve "Stevie Dirt" Eighinger and RacinDirt.com's Trenton Berry.
I was pleased, but a bit surprised about this week's announcement that IMCA would be returning to the Southern Iowa Speedway for 2012. Rumblings over the past year or two was that the sanctioning body would not go back in to Osky unless an established pro-IMCA promoter tookover the reigns. Either those rumblings were false or the combination of the Southern Iowa fairboard and the new track manager Mike VanGenderen was enough to overcome any concerns about stepping back in to a facility that was a star for IMCA for so many years. As a driver Van Genderen has stayed above any of the USRA vs. IMCA sentiments that many pot-stirrers seem to crave by winning a championship in one sanction's series and running second in the other's premier event in 2011. Mike is a strong presence who commands respect and should be just the man to lead the track to a successful transition. I am really happy to see that they are kicking off the season in early April once again as the schedule has not kicked off until mid-May the past couple of years. I'll look forward to spending many a Wednesday night in Osky again this season!
Congratulations to Timmy Current for not only winning the All Iowa Points Stock Car championship in 2011, but for becoming one of the new promoters along with Ryan Duhme at the Jackson County Speedway in Maquoketa for 2012. In the forty-five years of All Iowa Points I am pretty sure that this is the first champion to put on the promoter's hat the following season.
With the mystery for 2012 now solved at Oskaloosa it will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens at Bloomfield, Eldon and Memphis. Will any of the three race weekly? And, if so, will they follow suit and at the very least run IMCA-type rules since they all sit between Osky, Burlington and Donnellson? It would be a shame to see all three sit idle, or only host a race during the fair as each track has proven over the years that good racing is only the right scenario away.
For those of you who enjoy seeing those names from the past that conjure up memories of race nights long ago, you will want to be watching the Points page at PostivelyRacing as soon we will be putting up the full standings in All Iowa Points archives beginning with the first year of the points; 1967. Unfortunately I no longer have the records for many of the seasons between the early 80's and 2000 due to a house fire, but I did stumble upon some old handwritten records that I had stored elsewhere from those earlier seasons. The data entry is well underway and earlier today I sent the full 1967 standings to our fine webmaster Sue McDaniel to upload. As we continue to add these it should warm up some winter night for you over the next few months.
