I'm Liking The Looks of This!

It has been a busy Holiday season as Christine and I were fortunate to have all three of our children home for a full week, but in between the festivities I have been able to begin compiling the 2013 Specials schedule that you will soon find on the Calendar page at Positively Racing. Our webmistress Sue will be posting it soon and make sure that you check back often for updates as more tracks and series release their schedules for the upcoming season.

I love it when tracks take a risk and schedule for races early in the season in hope that the winter weather will be gone and will allow for such events and you can usually count on the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) to be a part of some of those early specials here in the upper Midwest. That is definitely the case for 2013 as the USMTS will be at the Humboldt Speedway on Friday night March 8th and then will come even farther north to Valley Speedway just west of Kansas City on Saturday March 9th.

Race fans, including me will be seeing a lot of Mike Van Genderen this year as he will handle the promotional duties at Oskaloosa, Donnellson and Webster City on a weekly basis, plus he will promote a few special events at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri. And that first event at Memphis will be an early season twinbill on Friday and Saturday March 22nd and 23rd.

As much as I enjoy early season races, I also love it when we can race until the snow flies and Van Genderen has lined a up a schedule that will allow me to go racing every weekend in October without driving more than 75 miles from my home! The first weekend is the Fall Challenge at Oskaloosa, the second weekend in October is the Fall Extravaganza at Donnellson, the Memphis Fall Nationals will be held the third weekend of the month and the annual Shiverfest event will close out the month on October 26th at the Lee County Speedway.

As I look at the schedule for another track that is close to my home, I just have to say "wow" when it comes to what 34 Raceway near Burlington has to offer in 2013. How about this lineup just to start the season?

March 30th - Sprint Invaders
April 6th - Brent Slocum Memorial for the Deery Brothers Series paying $5,000-to-win
April 13th - MOWA 410 Sprint Cars
April 20th - Corn Belt Clash/UMP Late Models

Then later on in the schedule you get the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars, the UMP Summer Nationals, USAC Non-Wing Sprints, more Sprint Invaders and more MOWA 410 Sprints! This should be a stellar season at 34 Raceway!

Oskaloosa will once a gain provide a Wednesday night racing opportunity beginning early in the season as the track will host the IMCA Frostbuster on April 3rd and then on the following Wednesday night, the 10th, the Sprint Invaders will come to town.

Two new events to the schedule this year are the $10,000-to-win Modified shows that will apparently not include cars that are running the crate motors as the After Market Nationals will be at the Farley Speedway on July 3rd and 4th and the World Modified Nationals will be held at the Marshalltown Speedway on September 20th and 21st. Both events should generate plenty of discussion leading up to them and will likely draw huge fields of cars for the big money. Very interesting.....

Friday night racing in Independence? The track that is known for its solid Saturday night IMCA weekly program will hold two Friday night events in 2013 with the first being on April 19th as the Sprint Invaders will make their first appearance there and then again on September 20th as the Deery Brothers Summer Series will headline along with a $2,000-to-win Stock Car show.

While scanning through the Missouri tracks I noted that the West Plains Motor Speedway will open its season with a four-day show April 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th that will pay $10,000-to-win for the B-Mods and I also see that Phil and Judy Santie have announced their retirement and their Malden Speedway is for sale with a price tag of $375,000. Now if I can just win that lottery!
