Racing Before The Snow; The Best of the 70's

Winter storm Virgil is predicted to drop eight inches or more of snow on the Midwest tonight and Sunday, but the folks down in Highland, Illinois, are moving ahead with their "Lucky 40" program. The season opener featuring UMP Late Models and Modifieds was postponed from last Saturday and tonight they will do their best to win the race against a snowstorm, something that thankfully does not happen very often. I thought about making the drive down, but the prospect of making a four hour drive home on potentially slick roads quickly changed my mind.

Here's hoping that they have a great show in Highland tonight and that the snow holds off long enough for everybody to make it safely back to home base because if this storm delivers as predicted it will more than likely wipe out the prospects for racing at several scheduled events for next weekend. One of those would be the inaugural weekend of the National Dirt Racing League or NDRL scheduled for Friday March 29th at Paducah Speedway and Saturday March 30th at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri. Virgil (remember that The Weather Channel now has us naming snowstorms) could take out 40% of the entire 2013 schedule for the NDRL as they only have five events listed as of today, and nearly 20% of singer Cody McCarver's tour dates. With the more southern track of this storm that I would like to instead call "Steve", you could actually see racing snowed out down south while venues such as Donnellson, Burlington, Vinton and LaSalle may still have a chance to run their races scheduled for the final weekend in March.

I know one thing, watching the NCAA tournament and Iowa's run through the NIT is fun, but I am ready to get out to the track so have mercy on us Steve!!!

Back in January I listed the Late Model combined All Iowa Points from 1967 through 1990 and at the time I said that I would eventually break them out by decades. Well with not much else going on around our area right now, what better time than to give you the list of Late Model combined points for the decade of the 70's, or 1970-1979. Enjoy and here's hoping that we can talk about some live racing next weekend!
