Two New Promoters and Late Model Points from New York, Delaware and Maryland

All it took was for me to say on Monday that the "silly season" had slowed for there to be two announcements of new track promoters in our area this week. The first is one that we had heard was in the works for over a month now and was just made official that Rodney and Debbie Ohrt will be the new promoters at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton. Actually I guess that I shouldn't assume that it will go by the CCR moniker as the quarter-mile oval has also been known as Tipton International in recent years. The couple will promote racing on Friday nights as R.D. Promotions and they will have more info along with rules coming soon on a new website. I have always loved the racing at Tipton, not to mention my regular stop at Happy Joe's, so I wish them well and look forward to meeting the Ohrts soon.

The second announcement of the week was much more of a surprise as Jimmy Dearing's great website STLracing.com broke the news on Thursday that Late Model driver Jim Moon will take over the promotion of the Montgomery Motorsports Park in New Florence, Missouri. This racy little track sat idle for a couple of years before Casey Pearson ran a weekly schedule in 2012 and then this past year only a few events featuring the MOWA Sprint Cars were run. Moon, who started racing out of Indiana before basing himself in Mount Auburn, Illinois, a year or two ago does not shy away from controversy as evidenced by two different instances last Spring. First was this video where he explained to "Feger Nation" how Jason was caught cheating for illegally treating tires and the second was when he and Brent Kreke scuffled after an incident at Belle-Clair Speedway. After that I did not see his name much in any results until the end of the year when I noticed that he was running and winning a race or two out at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore. Obviously a dynamic personality it will be interesting to see how "The Moon Man" makes the conversion from driver to promoter as he plans to run UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks and Four Cylinders on a yet to be announced race night. It has been a long time since I have been down to this quick quarter-mile and I hope to return in 2014 and the first thing that I hope Moon does is to establish an actual website that functions with a schedule along with full and timely results, something that this place has never really had before.
