Shiverfest Flashback to 2007

I wish that I could be in two places at the same time this Saturday night. The daughter of some very good friends of ours will be getting married in Des Moines and I will be thrilled to be there, but of I course I will also be wondering how the event that I used to be a big part of, "Shiverfest" at the Lee County Speedway is going as well. The weather forecast is just about as good as you can ask for on the final Saturday of October and I hope that you will take full advantage of Mother Nature's cooperation and head on out to the final race of the 2014 season in the state of Iowa.

This forecast reminds me of the weather that we had back in 2007 where we had more than 210 cars in the pits and raised more than $2,500 for the individuals and families who were battling kidney disease in the area. I can't be there this Saturday, but in hope of encouraging you to attend here is the story and results from that record-setting event.

Beautiful Weather Leads To Record-Setting Shiverfest

Donnellson, Iowa  – Beautiful autumn weather blessed southeast Iowa on Saturday and the result was a record setting evening for the eighth running of “Shiverfest” at the Lee County Speedway. Over 210 cars in five divisions were in competition, a new record car count, in front of the largest crowd ever to come out for the season-ending event. Tony Fraise, Mike VanGenderen, Jake Wenig, Jim Gillenwater and Joe Zrostlik all claimed feature wins on a night when a new record amount was raised for the Southeast Renal Dialysis Units as well.

VanGenderen started from the pole position in the fifteen-lap Stock Car finale and hugged the bottom line around the 3/8-mile oval. Rob Henry challenged early, but could not overtake the leader and Eric Flander made the late pass of Henry to finish second. Tony Von Dresky finished fourth while Abe Huls rallied from nineteenth to finish fifth. The Modified feature was a thriller as Mark Schulte paced the field for the first seventeen laps before Tony Fraise was able to use the middle line to ease past with two laps to go. Schulte made one more bid, but could not return to the front as Fraise earned his second Shiverfest title. Brandon Banks ran strong in third with Bruce Hanford and David Holder completing the top five.

The Hobby Stock feature was next on the card and four different drivers held the lead during the fifteen-lap distance. Bob Lynch was out front for the first five circuits before yielding to John Oliver Sr., then it was Doug Fenton out front until lap eleven. With three laps to go Jake Wenig, was got married the night before, made the pass on Fenton and then held off the 2007 Lee County Speedway track champion for the win. Lynch, Oliver and Brandon Symmonds completed the top five.

The B-Modified feature got off to a rough start when leader Bob Woodrow slid sideways in front of the field coming to score lap number two collecting top contender Wyatt Lantz. Woodrow could not restart while Lantz went to the back of the twenty-five car field. Jim Gillenwater assumed the lead from there and was never challenged the remainder of the distance for the victory. Tony Olson made a late charge to come home second with Phillip Beard and Kory Meyer next in line. Lantz made a bold run through the field to finish in fifth.

The four cylinder Wild Things had a tough time getting started, but once they did it was all Joe Zrostlik as the Long Grove driver went flag-to-flag for the victory. Tyler Schulte came from the back of the pack to finish second with Brad Chandler, Michael Grossman and John Flury next in line.

With the support of sponsors, drivers and fans, Shiverfest raised over $2,500 for the individuals and families who are battling kidney disease at the Southeast Renal Dialysis Units in Mt. Pleasant, Keokuk, Fort Madison and Burlington. This amount was helped out when Paul Boles of Boles Auto Sales matched the winning 50/50 amount of $629 and when drivers Kevin Cale, Tyler Cale and Mike Leffler donated their winnings back to the dialysis units. Area sponsors who made direct contributions to the dialysis units included KILJ Radio, Hagge Insurance, Casebine Credit Union, Becker’s Jewelers, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Mike Henderson-Edward Jones Investments, Dave’s Foods, Access Energy Cooperative & Access Energy Propane, Mt. Pleasant Tire & Service, Balzer Incorporated, the Mt. Pleasant Hy-Fee Food Store and Cottage Realty.
