Friday Notebook: November 14, 2014

Okay, I'll admit it, I am suffering race forum withdrawal right now. I don't know what exactly is going on with Iowastockcars.com, but only one person has been able to post anything since November 8th. Some of you might say "now come on Jeff, you always say that internet forums are bad for the sport, so now that this one has been down for almost a week now shouldn't you be happy?"

Not one bit!

Chad Seering does a great job with the ISC board and if things get too heated, or very loosely based on fact, he will make the appropriate moderation so that the AWP's cannot run wild like they do on other boards. I perhaps even miss the ISC forum more during the offseason as there are several very interesting and knowledgeable people who share opinions and information there than can lead to some good discussion or debates. Yes, I even do consider our old friend "raceaholic" as one of those valued contributors who I actually agree with more often than not, although I am not always a fan of how he goes about making his point or "defending" his position.

< sigh > Yes, I really do miss the Iowastockcars forum and I do hope that it is back up and running soon!

The National Sprint League released the first version of its inaugural season's schedule this week and it is no surprise that it is dominated by the two tracks in the region that run weekly 410 shows as both the Knoxville Raceway and Huset's Speedway will host four events each. There are eight "To Be Announced" dates on the schedule and while I know what and where two of them will likely be I am hoping that at least one or two of the remaining six will be at tracks that have not been hosting sprint car events of any kind on a regular basis over the past few years. And of course I am also hoping that more than two of those "TBA's" will be over here on my side of Knoxville, or east of the Sprint Car Capital of the World.

One NSL date that was previously publicized by the Marshalltown Speedway for Tuesday August 11th, the night after the NSL's "Front Row Challenge" at Oskaloosa and the night before the annual four day run of the Knoxville Nationals, is not on the schedule and when I asked my contact at the NSL if the track had just jumped the gun on announcing a date, the answer was a simple "yes".

Now if you are baffled by this and before you become all conspiratorial (sorry, this is an ISC forum reference that I just couldn't resist), keep in mind that the NSL might not have wanted the drivers to have to race for three straight nights including Sunday's Capitani Classic before the sport's biggest event. Perhaps one of those TBA dates will be at Marshalltown as I do agree that this would be one fun place to watch Sprint Cars! And it would also satisfy my desire to have at least one track on the schedule that has not run a Sprint Car event in recent years.

The NSL also announced this week that all of their races in 2015 will be able to be seen live, on the internet, at Speed Shift TV.......yay

Night one of the IMCA Duel In The Desert at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is in the books and this event definitely draws in the car counts as 231 Modifieds and 96 Sport Mods were in action Thursday night. IMCA's wide reach and common rules package makes it all possible and one of these days I might just have to turn Christine loose on the casinos while I go to the races. It could be one VERY expensive race trip though.....

Here's hoping that the weather warms up a bit in the next eight days as I am really looking forward to heading on down to the Springfield Raceway on November 22nd for Turkey Bowl VIII. I have been checking the extended forecast daily and it is amazing just how much it changes from one day to the next. As long as it eventually lands on dry skies and temps above 40 I'll be happy and I hope to see you there!

Enjoy the NASCAR finale, who knows what all might happen :)
