Hawkins Late Surge Earns His First All Iowa Points Four Cylinder Championship

Trailing by eighteen points in mid-September and with weekly racing complete, Cyle Hawkins appeared to be too far back to catch Caine Mahlberg in the All Iowa Points Four Cylinder chase. However, with a favorable special events schedule during the Fall on his side of the state, including two Darkside promoted triple headers in Tipton and Dubuque, Hawkins did what he needed to do to pull himself into a tie with Mahlberg coming into the final two events of the season, CJ's Turkey Dash and Lee County's Shiverfest.

Hawkins' dilemma though was that these two final events would run under IMCA rules and his #28 would not be legal, so he teamed up with his friend Cristian Grady to drive his #89 car at Columbus Junction. Up against a field of thirty-one cars in an unfamiliar ride, Hawkins battled his way through to a fourth place finish that would give him a two-point edge over Mahlberg and the well earned All Iowa Points title. He would then come back two weeks later, again in the #89 car, to score a couple of insurance points at Shiverfest. In the only AIP division where the point scale is set by car count, Cyle scored sixteen "full field" feature wins where there were ten or more cars in attendance for the event while he scored points in forty-two events. This year's champ finished tenth in the final 2020 standings.

Mahlberg's surge in the All Iowa Points was a byproduct of his successful quest for the IMCA Sport Compact National Championship as he had fourteen full field wins and scored points in forty events. It was a big move up to second in this year's All Iowa Points standings after ranking eighteenth last year. Spencer's Kaytee DeVries takes the third spot for the second year in a row and is definitely a victim of short fields as in the story for her IMCA Lady Eagle title she is reported to have seventeen feature wins on the season while only two of them earned the full five All Iowa Points for racing against ten or more cars. DeVries scored points on forty-two race nights in 2020.

Minnesota's Jaedon Erickson comes in fourth while Chris Vannausdle, who shared the 2020 title with Jade Lange, ranks fifth. Newcomer of the Year is Logan Clauson who was the early season leader in the standings before finishing in the 17th position.
