Shiverfest 2020 Winners List; Aikey, Long, Murty, Paul and Ash

Bright sunny skies and southerly winds welcomed racers and fans to the 2020 edition of Shiverfest at the Pepsi Lee Count Speedway in Donnllson on Saturday afternoon, but just before the final two features of the night the wind changed direction and the temperature started to fall. Even with the late change in the weather, this one will be remembered as a warm Shiverfest drawing in 146 competitors from six different states.

The Stock Cars would run the first feature of the evening with twenty-three cars set for twenty laps. Erick Knutsen and Jason Cook would make up the front row, but it would be third starting Todd Reitzler who would nose ahead at the stripe to lead the opening lap. With Reitzler working low Dustin Griffiths would find the high side to his liking as he would charge from sixth to second and he soon had both Dallon Marty and John Oliver Jr. up there riding the rim with him.

Griffiths would lead that topside trio past Reiztler on lap four and the battle was on as three of the region's best were locked in nose to tail. After scoring lap nine Murty dropped down off the cushion in turns one and two to make a bid for the lead and when he came up short Oliver squeezed alongside him on the high side going down the back stretch dropping Dallon to third. But only for a split second as Murty then used a low line exit off of turn four to go from third to first before going back to the top in turns one and two. When Griffiths tried a lower line trying to get back to the front, Oliver again squeezed his way past on the outside to get to second and we were back to that nose to tail formation riding the rim, only now in a different order.

With four laps remaining the leaders were closing in on Kyle Boyd and when he went to the top to enter turn one, Murty had to check up a bit prompting Oliver to try to drive underneath. The problem was that Griffiths was right there as well and when contact sent Oliver for a spin the first caution of the race would wave. Oliver waited in turn two and after Griffiths passed him by he gassed it up and hit Griffiths hard in the rear  before making the hard right turn into the pit area. Not one to step down, Griffiths gave up his second spot for the restart to follow Oliver into the pits and the scramble was on as crews, fans and track officials made their way quickly to the scene to try to diffuse the situation.

Once all was said and done we were ready to go back to action with four laps remaining and Wisconsin's Eric Arneson would take up the challenge hugging the low line. He could not stay with the leader long though as the youngster Murty pulled away for an impressive win clinching his first All Iowa Points championship over his father Damon, a three time champ in his own rite, who was not in attendance tonight. Reiztler would get back by Arneson to take the runner-up spot as Jason Cook finished fourth ahead of his fellow front row starter Knutsen.

The Sport Compacts were up next for fifteen laps and while this division is typically pretty well behaved at the 3/8th-mile D-shaped speedway, that was not the case tonight. Spins, stuffing it into the guardrail, dropping fluids and leaving behind a field of debris when a door was ripped from a car caused at least five cautions and made for a long race, a race that was essentially won on the opening lap when Jason Ash moved from fourth to first. Chuck Fullenkamp would keep the pressure on late in the race, but there would be no stopping Ash from taking his third straight Shiverfest title in the four cylinder class. Cody Staley rode the rim throughout coming from thirteenth to take third behind Fullenkamp. Craig Bangert made a late charge to take fourth after starting in the fifth row and the race for fifth was a photo finish as Jeffrey DeLonjay edged out Kimberly Abbott.

A stout field of thirty-seven Modifieds had been trimmed down to a twenty-four car starting grid come feature time with Ethan Braaksma also coming from fourth to first on the opening lap. Braaksma would then go to work on building a lead as the battles raged on behind him and on lap five Michael Long made his way into second after starting from eighth. Long was slowly carving away at Braaksma's lead and on lap fourteen he attempted a slide job in turns three and four. Braaksma executed the crossover with precision, but when he didn't slide back up to the cushion quick enough in turns one and two, Long would sail around him on the outside to take the lead.

The caution would wave a lap later when Josh Most would spin in turn three and then continue to back up avoiding contact until he was nearly exiting turn four. Most had been battling with Travis Denning for the fourth spot and under the caution Most pulled up alongside Denning before swerving into him and deftly cutting down Denning's right front tire for apparent revenge. When both drivers then headed for the pit area it looked like the next fight of the night was about to get underway, but instead Denning's crew made the tire change and had him back out on the track just in time for the restart.

Even with sixth starting Jeff Aikey quickly moving to second there would be no staying with Long as he pulled way to a convincing victory. Aikey and Braaksma were second and third respectively, Kelly Shryock came from twelfth to fourth and Mark Burgtorf filled out the top five.

After Long celebrated his win in victory lane, the wind picked up and was now noticeably cooler coming from the west instead of the south and twenty-four of the top Sport Mod drivers in the Midwest were now set to go for twenty laps of racing without a single caution. Pole-sitter Tyler Soppe would set a torrid early pace as drivers jockeyed for position sometimes four-wide behind him. Austin Paul would emerge from the pack and, while Soppe worked the high line on both ends, Paul would start to diamond the corners and that paid off quickly as Paul would take the lead on lap eight exiting turn two.

Soppe would fade a bit through the mid-stage of the race, but was again reeling in the leader with the laps winding down. And, after taking the white flag, the leader Paul would jump the left front of Dakota Girard leaving fans to wonder if his right rear tire would propel him back to the checkers on time. It looked like that right rear was about to go down as Soppe pounced and closed the gap to just over a car length going down the back stretch one last time.

It may not have made it much further, but that right rear tire did hold together to get Paul to the checkers ahead of Soppe and the eighth starter Sean Wyett. The 2020 All Iowa Points Limited Modified champion Brayton Carter finished fourth with outside front row starter Austin Schrage fading to fifth at the checkers.

We were now down to our final event of the night, and the 2020 racing season at the track that is tucked into the southeast corner of Iowa. Thankfully this one went twenty-five laps with just two minor cautions, the first coming for Frank Mason's spin in turn four on lap two and Jill George's right rear tire blowing to shreds on lap nine. Gunnar Frank would lead the opening lap only to have Jeff Aikey go charging by on lap two and his lead would grow quickly after the lap two restart. Tommy Elston dropped Darrel DeFrance to third on that final restart and after fading for a few laps, Elston started to close the gap on Aikey and was within striking distance with just two laps to go.

So now he caught him, but just how was the local favorite Elston supposed to get around Aikey who will be a 2021 Inductee to the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame? Well he wasn't as Aikey crusied to the win and the $1,000 top prize. Elston and DeFrance would join him on the podium as Matt Strassheim and the Dirt Kings Late Model Tour's 2020 Rookie-of-the-Year Gunnar Frank would fill out the top five.

Despite not being a high paying event, Shiverfest again drew in some long distance travelers including the driver from Wisconsin we mentioned above in the Stock Cars, Eric Arneson, and Minnesota's Dan Mackenthun was here in a new car after he destroyed his at Boone wrapping it around an infield light pole. Larry Fitzsimmons made the six hour pull down from East Bethel, Minnestota, to run thirteenth in the Late Model feature, but nobody came farther than West Fargo, North Dakota, Sport Mod driver Torey Fischer. The young lady was riding in a qualifying spot midway through her heat race when she dropped the driveshaft out of the car. Her crew was persistent though and Torey was able to start her B-Main only to come up one position short of qualifying. However, come feature time there she was starting at the back of the twenty-four car field, I assume as an alternate, and she would race her way up to eighteenth at the checkers.

It was great to have Jake Croxton back in the flagstand for the evening and both Tony Paris and Dan Workman did a great job on the microphones keeping the nice sized crowd informed and entertained. Finally, a big Thank You to promoters Brian and Marcie Gaylord for continuing the traditions of Shiverfest even during this challenging 2020 racing season!

The extended forecast still looks good for next Saturday November 7th as the CJ Speedway will host the Turkey Dash for the fourth year in a row. The inaugural event was completed under less than ideal weather conditions and the second year the event was washed out just as hot laps were being completed. Last year the entire weekend was lost due to an early snowfall that did not melt in time so let's just say that promoter Larry Richardson and his crew deserve a sunny and sixty-five degree day.

Hope to see you there!

Upper Midwest Pavement Late Model Points for 2020

Readers of the Back Stretch know that I always have the goal of getting to at least one pavement race a year and in 2020 that was the Friday night portion of Octoberfest in La Crosse. Yes, I am a dirt fan through and through, but I do enjoy a night on the tar now and then and there is one thing that they do that I would like to see in dirt track racing. Instead of using the Delaware Double File restart formation with the leader out front and the second place driver choosing the inside or outside of the first double row, they instead put a cone out on the front stretch once the proper single file lineup has been confirmed.

At La Crosse they call it "The Cone of Indecision" as drivers, including the leader, choose whether they start high or low by how they pass by the cone. So for example, if you have a track where one groove is clearly better than the other (either locked down low or riding a tall cushion), the first two or three drivers might all choose the preferred line making it worth the risk for the next driver to go to the other line and see if he or she can make it work. Not only does it add to the entertainment value, but it removes the situation where a third-place driver is forced to start in the slower line and perhaps get railroaded.

In 2019 my one "new to me" track was the high-banked quarter-mile Slinger Speedway and it was great to "know" who some of the drivers were through my tracking of the Midwest Pavement Late Model points using the same 5-point scale that I have been using on the All Iowa Points. I only do the Super Late Models and the Late Model divisions and frankly I am a bit sad to see that in 2020 a few tracks are now running a 602 Crate Late Model class as well. Nothing like spreading the counts out even further!

In the Super Late Model division Merrill, Wisconsin's Justin Mondeik is a first time champion in this the fifth season of these standings as he was a nine time feature winner in his twenty-two top five finishes in 2020. Mondeik surged onto the scene in 2018 finishing tied for third on this list before dropping to the twelfth spot last year. Mark Mackesy of Wausau, Wisconsin, is the runner-up posting four feature wins in sixteen top five finishes with his previous best showing coming in 2016 when he was twentieth on the list. John Beale of Verona, Wisconsin, completes the podium also winning four times in sixteen top fives. His previous best showing was a sixteenth place finish in 2019. Two-time defending champion Casey Johnson drops to the fifth position in this year's abbreviated schedule that saw no racing at Madison International Raceway.

From the De-Mon Racing #44 Justin Mondeik Facebook page

That abbreviated schedule did not keep Minnesota's Jacob Goede from returning to the top of the Late Model standings for the fourth year in a row as his Big 8 Series win at Octoberfest was his eighth victory of the season in twenty top finishes bolstered of course by the fact that his home track the Elko Speedway runs two feature races each race night. I believe that this is done to give those drivers a better shot at the NASCAR weekly racing series point fund money when compared to southern tracks, but is an obvious edge here as well. Another Elko regular Nick Murgic is the runner-up with three wins in eighteen top fives while the driver ranked third, Jacob Nottestad was efficient scoring six wins in just eleven top five feature finishes. Murgic was ranked twentieth in 2019 while Nottestad was third in last year's standings as well. The 2019 runner-up Nick Panitzke scored his only points of the 2020 season during Octoberfest as he was twenty-third on the Wisconsin State Points Late Model list this year including one feature win driving a USRA dirt car.

Fall Notebook: October 24, 2020

Wow, what a change n the weather! On Thursday night Christine and I enjoyed dinner on the deck of The Drake restaurant right next to the Mississippi River in Burlington and on Friday the temperature dropped nearly forty degrees. With that sharp drop accurately in the forecast both events in the region, the Fall Futurity at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City and the Calvin Meyer Memorial at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, were called off earlier in the week saving all of us diehards a night or two of freezing our butts off in the stands. Thank you Todd Staley and Mike Van Genderen!

This is actually our second bout of cold weather here in October so that should bode well for the next few weeks as the weather pattern has a tendency to swing back and forth this time of year. With this weekend wiped out that means that there are just two events remaining at All Iowa Points paying tracks with the championship in two divisions still up for grabs. In the battle of the Murty's, Dallon's feature wins at the I-80 Speedway and at the Southern Iowa Speedway over the past two weekends broke the tie with his father Damon and now Dad would have to win at both Shiverfest in Donnellson and The Turkey Dash at Columbus Junction, without having Dallon in the top five at either event, to climb back into that tie. Never before in the fifty-four year history of the All Iowa Points have we had a father and son finish one-two in the final standings and, if they should happen to tie for the championship, I can virtually guarantee you that it would never happen again before The Green New Deal brings down the curtain on short track racing. I think that Joe clarified on Friday that it wouldn't be until 2050 now, so that's good, right?

In the Four Cylinder division there are still four drivers that have a shot at earning their first All Iowa Points title, but for all four it will require a road trip or two and of course one or two top five finishes to earn it. Coming into October southwest Iowa driver Chris Vannausdle appeared to have the best shot at winning the title with two nights of racing at his home track in Corning, but that turned out to be a miserable weekend for him when he was involved in accidents on both nights. Meanwhile, up in Webster City that weekend, Jade Lange's runner-up finish on Friday night pulled him into a tie with Vannausdle with a Saturday show perhaps giving him the lead, but a DNF put a disappointing end to the Humboldt driver's weekend. Neither driver made an appearance at Oskaloosa last weekend so they remain tied at the top of the Four Cylinder standings and if they, and the other two contenders stay at home over the next two weekends, then they will share the title as we do not use tie breakers. But where would the fun be in that?

Spencer's Kaytee DeVries sits six points behind the lead duo so she would need to make two road trips to catch or overtake those two and become only the second female driver to win an All Iowa Points championship. Kimberly Abbott was the 2016 Four Cylinder Champion and Kaytee's husband Jay DeVries was the 2015 champion so of course that would be another landmark title if Kaytee could close the deal as we will likely never see another husband and wife duo win All Iowa Points championships before the end of fossil fuels. The driver who sat at the top of the standings for most of the season, Ryan Bryant from Mason City, also has a shot at the championship just eight points back meaning that he would need to finish in the top three at Shiverfest to still have a chance to steal the championship at the Turkey Dash.

Jade Lange's Car #43

Do these drivers even know about their potential All Iowa Points championship? Probably not, so if you are reading this and know one of them, send them the link to this story. No, it doesn't pay anything to win the title, it is all for pride and something to add to your resume in order to obtain more sponsorship dollars in the future. And does it really mean anything to have an All Iowa Points championship on your resume? Well it sure didn't hurt any that one of the new National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductees Jeff Aikey had the 2003 All Iowa Points Late Model championship listed as one of his many accomplishments. Just the same as other NDLM Hall of Famers Verlin Eaker, Ed Sanger, Curt Hansen, Gary Webb, Tom Hearst, Ken Walton, Roger Dolan, Ray Guss Jr. and Joe Kosiski who also had their All Iowa Points championships listed in their accomplishments.

A big congratulations to Jeff Aikey for being in the Hall of Fame Class of 2021! Jeff was also the All Iowa Points Champion in 1984 in the Sportsman division.

Another cancellation announcement that came down this week should have been no surprise when the Gateway Dirt Nationals fell to the virus for 2020. Yes, we have been racing relatively safely over the past four months, but those have been at outdoor venues that are not located within the city limits of a large metro area. The standards that the city of St. Louis would have made the event live up to would have been too much and so just like many other major events in 2020, we will just have to accept a year off and hope that it can resume in 2021. I would say that this announcement does not bode well for the Chili Bowl in 2021, but hopefully they can figure out a way to still run the mid-winter event. Masks would probably be recommended anyway for six night of fumes and dust in the Tulsa Expo Center where the "Chili Bowl Flu" has a reputation of its own.

While some of you may feel that this will all come to an end on November 3rd, I think that it will be mid-summer of 2021 before things can start to head back to normal if, and only if, a safe and effective vaccine is in broad distribution.

As I wrote here back in April, I have gone to, and still plan on going to races without fear during the COVID crisis and so far so good. As far as I know there has not been any racing event, other than perhaps the event that replaced the Nationals at Knoxville, that has been identified as a "spreader event" and it has been great for all of us to have a choice of whether or not we wanted to attend a race in person. Two weeks ago my wife and I made the trip up to La Crosse for a weekend of autumn sightseeing along with a couple of nights of Octoberfest racing on the pavement at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway and with absolutely perfect weather for the second weekend of October the Friday night crowd was huge! In order to find an open area to sit we had to go all the way down to the front two rows at the exit of turn four and any of you that know me will know that even in normal times, sitting down low at the exit of turn four is not an ideal spot for me just for my own safety considerations. We enjoyed three feature races, one of them having a multi-car pileup directly in front of us at the start, before heading for the exits and when I figured that the crowd would be even bigger on Saturday night I suggested to Christine that instead of going racing we would go out for dinner downtown and do a walking tour with the Ghosts of LaCrosse. I am sure that she had thought that I had gone insane because I would have NEVER made such a switch at any other time, but this would be the third event this season where I chose to stay away from the race track knowing that the grandstands would be full.

It was my CHOICE and I just hope that as we head into 2021 that we still have the opportunity to make a choice rather than what we experienced in April and May of this past season. Renting an RV and spending the entire Octoberfest Race Weekend on the fairgrounds is still on my bucket list!!

Kyle Larson will be the 2020 All Iowa Points Champion in the 410 sprint Car division. Hard to believe that would have happened as you were looking at the upcoming season back in March and Larson made the news in two big ways this past week. First is his reinstatement to NASCAR that at this point appears to open the door for Larson to be named the driver of the Hendrick Racing #88 car for 2021. The other was his announcement that he would be folding his World of Outlaws team at the end of the season, the #2 that has been driven by Carson Macedo the past two years. Yes, Kyle Larson won a ton of short track races in 2020, but the closing of his Sprint Car team is proof that winning a bunch of dirt track races comes nowhere close to netting you as much income as what driving a Cup car does. Here's hoping that 2021 brings continued success on a much bigger stage for arguably the best and most versatile race car driver ever.

I will summarize my 2020 season another month from now, but as it stands now I will only come up about eight events less than what I have been able to attend over the past several seasons. All of those would have come during that April/May timeframe and fortunately, once we were able to go racing the rainouts have been few and far between. In my unscientific observations I would say that car counts have been up in general and at most of the races that I have attended the crowd has been larger than I had expected. I hope that this has been the case for promoters as it has been a season where they were not competing with new movies, small town festivals, kids sports activities for the most part, minor league baseball, etc. In most areas the local dirt track was really the only entertainment option available and I am hoping that the sport has hooked some new fans again for 2021 and beyond.

An event that is obviously close to my heart is coming up next Saturday, October 31st, with the annual Shiverfest at the Pepsi Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. This has always been more than just a racing event and while they won't be able to do the hayrack rides though the pits for the kids, they will be able to continue the traditional trick-or-treating with the drivers with extra safety precautions in place. And of course, if you choose to not have your kids go down to the infield to meet with the drivers, they will have some candy and treats packaged up and ready to pass out at the Junior Fan Club booth. It is great to have choices! As of right now the extended forecast looks good for next Saturday so hopefully I will see you down in Donnellson.

Then the following Saturday, November 7th, promoter Larry Richardson and everybody at the CJ Speedway will give The Turkey Dash another try. This will be the fourth time that this race has been on the schedule and while the first one was able to run off under cold and damp conditions, the other two have been weathered out completely. They are due for some good weather this time around and if the skies are clear and the temperatures are comfortable for early November I am hoping that drivers and fans alike will support this event! Mark it on your calendar as it will be the final race in state of Iowa for the 2020 season.

If the weather is good on the weekend of the 14th I will be looking for someplace to go within reason. I thought that the Old 71 Speedway in Butler, Missouri, would be my destination that weekend, but they announced this week that due to the weather getting colder, tonight's race would be the third and final one of their recent reopening.

The final race on my 2020 schedule is the annual Turkey Bowl at the Springfield Raceway and I saw this week that they are changing up the format for this year's event making it a two-day show on Friday and Saturday November 20th and 21st. Heat races for the Midwest Mods, Legend Cars and B-Mods will be run on Friday night along with an open practice session. Then, on Saturday those divisions will have their B-Mains and features while the Modifieds and Late Models will run a full program. While I would love to see the heat races for the B-Mods since that division features some of the best racers in the Midwest, that format definitely works for me and I have my fingers crossed hoping for good weather for our annual trip to Springfield.

I haven't given up on the 2020 racing season yet, and I hope that you are also planning to get out to the rack at least one more time before winter sets in. Look for me out on the Back Stretch!

Final Nebraska Points for 2020

When the Spring Nationals at Beatrice were weathered out on the second weekend in March little did we know at the time that it would be until the first week in June before any racing would be held in the state of Nebraska. Once things did get underway though it was some familiar names in victory lane and at least one of this years Nebraska State Points champion will be a contender for the title of "Best In The Midwest" in his division. These points are tabulated using the same 5-point scale that is used for the All Iowa Points and have been tracked each year since 2016.

Cory Dumpert was virtually unstoppable in the IMCA Late Model division this season rolling up twenty-four feature wins and thirty-six top five finishes during this abbreviated season. His point total of 154 is 95 points better than runner-up Ben Sukup who had a respectable five wins and sixteen top fives in 2020. This is the third Nebraska state title for Dumpert to go with 2016 and 2019 and his fourth state points championship overall as he was the best in Kansas in 2018. Last year Cory was the runner-up in the "Best In The Midwest" Late Model standings with 146 points, so look for him to be at our near the top of that list again when it is released in December. Zach Zentner joins Dumpert and Sukup on the podium with seventeen top five finishes on the season.

Jordan Grabouski is now five for five in our Nebraska state points staying on top of the list of Modified drivers for the fifth straight year. Grabouski picked up twelve wins in thirty-three top five finishes this season and with some points earned in other states as well he just might be able to repeat his "Best In The Midwest" title as well. Anthony Roth is the runner-up to Grabouski for the third year in a row after winning eight times in his twenty-eight top five finishes and Mark Leiting climbs from sixteenth in the 2019 standings to third in 2020 winning five times in eighteen top fives.

Brian Osantowski is a first time Nebraska state champion in the Limited Modifieds on the strength of fourteen feature victories in his nineteen top five finishes. It was a solid jump to the top of the list for the driver from Columbus who has finished twelfth, thirteenth, twenty-second and fifteenth over the previous four seasons. James Roebuck extends his streak to five years a row in the top with his best showing yet, a runner-up finish after winning ten times in nineteen top fives. Roebuck's previous best was a third in 2016, the same year that this year's third place finisher, Kyle Prauner, was the Nebraska state champion. Prauner was in the five eighteen times in 2020 with five feature wins and he is tied with the 2018 champion Lance Borgman who won four times in twenty top fives. Sixth ranked Tyler Nerud had the most top fives in the division this year with twenty-two.

It was a small sampling with the Winged Sprint Cars in the state this year and running against small car counts each week at his home track in Stuart allowed Bob Dvorak to claim the Nebraska state title by just one point over Jason Danley. The runner-up in these standings last year, and never lower than seventh since 2016, Dvorak's first state title comes with five wins in seven top five finishes. Danley whose previous best finish was twenty-first in 2018 had one feature win in his eight top fives this season while three-time and defending champion Tyler Drueke clocks in third with three wins in nine top five finishes.

This is the first year that we have tracked the IMCA/USRA type Stock Car division outside of Iowa and it should come as no surprise the the 2020 IMCA Stock Car National Champion Mike Nichols is also our 2020 Nebraska state champion. On Nebraska tracks Nichols captured fourteen feature wins, six runner-up finishes and one third place showing to edge out Neligh's Cameron Wilkinson by seventeen points.
