The Darkside To Tipton?....No Trucks, Please!!!

A few minutes while on the road for business so thought I would comment on a couple of items making news this week.

It looks like Timmy Current and Ryan Duhme, or as they call themselves "The Darkside", have a good shot at becoming the next promoters at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton. By all accounts the duo had a successful rookie season of promoting at Maquoketa in 2012 and they are now looking at expanding to a two track operation. The assumption is that with the new promoters the Tipton track will switch over to IMCA, however with Davenport not too far down the road as an already sanctioned Friday night track it will be interesting to see how the folks in Vinton will handle this one if Davenport promoter Bob Wagener does not want that to happen.

If the Tipton track does switch over to IMCA that would be one less track running the "open" Modified rules package and those drivers would be looking for a new place to race on Friday nights. The CJ Raceway in Columbus Junction would be a nearby option and I do hope that the prospect of having more Modifieds each week would be enough to choke off the possibility of introducing a new truck class, an idea that they floated out this week. In an area of the country that already has too many classes with even different rules packages within the same class (i.e. Modifieds), my vote would be exactly the opposite of Tim McGraw's recent hit......Truck No! Although, I must admit, that some of the best times at this track was during the tenure of promoter John Mickey when they were running a class of cars, affectionately known as "Mickey Mobiles". These were street stocks on steroids with big motors and Late Model tires that were not legal to run anywhere else and the locals would pack the stands every week to cheer on their local favorites.

The 2013 Tentative Schedule for the Knoxville Raceway has been released and I am pleasantly surprised to see that the Hobby Stock, Sport Mod, Modified and Stock Car Shootout is listed for the last Sunday in April, the 28th. Hopefully this event can be run on its scheduled night next year and not have to go through multiple cancellations due to Mother Nature.

NASCAR will never admit it, but they have to love all of the attention that the media is giving the series after the Dogfight in the Desert last weekend. I cringed when Clint Bowyer used the "R" word in his interview as I knew that he would have to pull back on that, but otherwise it was a good ol' fashioned rumble, the kind that will bring in huge ratings and will likely fill the grandstand this Sunday at Homestead.

Barry and I will have to get up early so that we can return home in time to watch it after attedning the Turkey Classic this Saturday at the Springfield Raceway. The weather looks like it will be perfect so we hope to see you there!
