Random Thoughts On Random Subjects

The A&E Network had no problem rolling in the dough from a reality show featuring a family of quirky, or quacky down home Southerners, but then they seem to be shocked when one of them speaks out in a down home Southern manner.

And on that same subject, while many supporters are stating that he deserves his "Right to Free Speech" that has absolutely nothing to do with it. He spoke his mind freely, nobody stopped that, but the Right to Free Speech does not guarantee that there won't be some action taken, in this case by an employer, as to what has been said. In essence, that is the employer's right to free speech.

Had to throw that in since the claim of "what about the right to free speech?" is always such a popular argument on racing forums. Usually after some drivel from an AWP is wiped out by a responsible moderator.

Good to see that Raceceivers will be required next season at both the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton and the Quad City Speedway in East Moline. I'm sure that they felt that it was the most efficient way of doing things in the past, but to stop the cars and send an official onto the track to point every car into its position after each and every caution period seemed to be a show-killer. Especially on the nights when the cautions come one right after another. Now let's say that one driver spins on a restart, the realignment process should be quick and easy rather than what fans have had to sit through in the past.

I know that some drivers did not like having to spend the initial money to buy the Raceceiver, and a few are squawking about it on the ISC Forum, but I have yet to have heard a driver complain about the process after they have used it a few times.

I see where Kenny Dobson and Last Chance Promotions have also picked up Lincoln (Illinois) Speedway making them a busy bunch in 2014. The promotional team behind the MOWA Sprint Car Series and the Jacksonville Speedway will also be the new promoters on Sunday nights in Quincy. Lincoln and Jacksonville both race on Friday nights and although neither track will be racing every week, they will run some of the same nights strategically not running the same classes.

Looks like Sunday August 17th will be the first co-sanctioned Sprint Invader and ASCS Warrior Region event at the Quincy Raceways. It will be the third night of a big weekend for the Invaders who will be in Bloomfield on Friday night and at 34 Raceway near Burlington on Saturday.

Steve Eighinger who does a spectacular job of covering the action at the Quincy Raceways with his "Stevie Dirt" blog had an entry yesterday noting how the UMP method of qualifying and then running a Fast Six dash to determine the first three rows of the feature is so important is determining a winner. I made a comment asking about the stats and he quickly obliged with a follow up showing that 9 of the 19 Late Model features (47.4%) were won from the front row in 2013 while in 2011, the last year where an inversion of average points was used only 5 of 19 Late Model features (26.3%) were won from the front row. Our PR.com colleague Danny Rosencrans has noted that the inverted starts were a point of contention with some of the drivers and my experience would tell me that it was the outspoken fast guys who had a problem with it. The others? Not so much.....As I noted in my comment, as a fan in the stands am I paying for races or chases?

After running a handful of races in 2013 the NDRL has burst upon the Dirt Late Model scene as the third national touring series and there are some interesting drivers who have indicated that they will chase the championship in 2014 including Dennis Erb Jr., John Blankenship; Jonathan Davenport, Billy Moyer Jr., Kent Robinson, Steve Francis, Tim Fuller, Mason Ziegler, William Thomas and perhaps even Iowa's Brian Birkhofer. Even though the Winter Extreme races in Tucson and El Paso are non-points events it looks like perfect attendance at those nine shows will earn a driver a guaranteed starting spot in all NDRL features as long as they continue to maintain perfect attendance. It will be interesting to see who all will take advantage of that.

Potential winter storm on the way for this weekend, stay safe and have a Very Merry Christmas!!
