With all of Iowa being cold, damp and soggy there were a few drivers who took to the road and posted some nice finishes. Darin Duffy made the trip up to Shawano, Wisconsin, where he finished fourth in the IMCA Modified main event. Dan Drury made the long haul from Eldora up to Fairmont, Minnesota, and finished third in the IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature and Shannon Anderson ventured south from Des Moines to Topeka, Kansas, to win the IMCA Hobby Stock feature at Heartland Park Sunday night. After sitting idle last year the track in Topeka now runs weekly on Sundays, has shifted to IMCA sanctioning and has to be thrilled with the car counts they are seeing thus far in the Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks.
While the weather shut down racing in central Iowa, the Drake Relays went on as scheduled and I had a great time with my father-in-law Bob Shores who attends the event every year. This is the first time that he has asked me to go though, so perhaps I have done something right over the past year? :)
It was cold and windy as we watched around twelve hours of track and field events on Friday, then on Saturday a steady rain that did not stop even once from 8 a.m. though 4:30 p.m. joined the cold and wind to make for much less than desirable conditions. It was amazing though how the athletes performed as there were several event records broken over the two days and the Cedar Rapids Prairie boys Sprint Medley team anchored by Jalen Rima even established themselves as the nation's best thus far this season edging ahead of a school in California who would have likely never even come out of the locker room on a day like this.
If you will indulge me, I do want to mention a couple of athletes and their performances. Mount Pleasant high school graduate Logan Mulford who is now a junior at Central College in Pella finished eighth in the Men's University/College High Jump competition with a leap of 6-11.75. Now keep in mind that Central is a Division III school where athletics are something that you do to enhance your college experience that you pay in full for. Among the 17 athletes that finished behind Mulford were several that are attending schools such as Notre Dame, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kent State, Indiana, Texas and Iowa likely on full athletic scholarships, so.......way to go Logan! Here's hoping that he can win the Division III National High Jump title at the end of this season.
The West Burlington/Notre Dame squad was impressive again taking on the athletes from the large schools and for the second year in a row Jacob Smith won the 400 Meter Hurdles. Smith, who is headed for the University of Northern Iowa next year, was one of the seven scholarship recipients from the Slocum Foundation and was on hand to thank everybody for their support at 34 Raceway a few weeks ago during the Slocum 50.
And finally, Craig Allender, here is
a name to keep in the back of your mind. Creightin Mitchell anchored the Indian
Hills Middle School 4 x 100 Relay team to a new Drake Relays record of 46.59 on
Friday afternoon. Mitchell moved from Mount Pleasant to Des Moines at the
mid-point of his eighth grade year and it has been a long time, if ever that I
have seen such a dominant athlete at the Middle School level. It will be
interesting to see how he develops over his high school years.
Back to racing..... our PositivelyRacing colleague Chris Uren texted me this past weekend and said that a couple
of Modified drivers had noticed that they were missing their finishes in the
latest update of the All Iowa Points. Not sure how I did it, but I had every
other division but the Modifieds tabulated for that certain track and the
correction has been made in the current standings. It is great to know that
drivers are keeping an eye on where they stand as it makes all the efforts
worth while!
The weather is looking good for at
least the next few days and it will be good to get back to the track tonight as
the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders join the Wednesday night weekly show at the
Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. It will be a busy announcer's booth as
Bill Wright and I will join Tony Paris and Ryan "The Administrator"
Bergeson on the microphone. Then on Thursday night the Lucas Oil MLRA Late
Models return to what has become one of their favorite tracks at the Lee County
Speedway in Donnellson.
That MLRA swing will continue on to
Davenport Friday night and Memphis MO on Saturday, but I will instead be
watching a nephew close out his high school baseball career this weekend. No
worries though as the MLRA returns to our area next weekend with Friday night's
May 13th appearance at the Dubuque Speedway circled in red on my calendar. Make
sure that you check out our Special events calendar so that you can plan your
next racing adventure!
As I mentioned last week, I am
starting off this season trying to expand our state points beyond Iowa and
Missouri and it will continue as long as I can "keep up". With all of
the rainouts this past weekend it made the task much easier and, since it might
be the only time that I actually am caught up this year, let's go ahead and
give you the full rundown of each state and division that has had at least four
or five events held in 2016.
