Counting The Days and A Look Back to 1979

If you follow your favorite race track on Facebook you have likely seen several posts recently showing the picture of a race car with a number matching the number of days remaining until the season opener. "Only 45 Days Until The Season Opener At XYZ Speedway!" Yea right, you do realize that old XYZ currently has six inches of snow pack and the extended forecast doesn't show a high temperature over fifty degrees for the next twenty days. Oh well, I guess there is nothing wrong with being optimistic. After all, that is the theme of our website, but for many of these tracks they are going to need a minor miracle to be ready for their March or early April events. And, for those tracks in Minnesota and Wisconsin, it could be a very late start to the 2019 season.

Even some of our southern neighbors are set to get a pretty hefty snow storm this weekend, but since there is nothing already on the ground there and that March sun can be pretty effective in the melting process, hopefully that won't hurt their chances over the next few weeks as that might be my destination if I am going to get any early season action in.

Ahead of that storm the Old No. 1 Speedway in Harrisburg, Arkansas, is running their two-day Winter Heat show this weekend and from a glance at the car numbers that they listed it looks like they have a pretty solid field of cars there with twenty-eight Modifieds and just under twenty Crate Late Models. From my experience it is next to impossible to get results beyond who won the race from this track and we originally thought that our colleague Ed Reichert was going to be on hand to give us the story, but I see that Ed has made the trip to Clarksville, Tennessee, instead. I sat with Sport Mod driver Curtis Van Der Wal when the Oskaloosa Indians came to my hometown to win their sub-state basketball game Monday night and Curtis asked me if I had my $1,950 ready to be the Track Owner For A Night at the Interstate Speedway. My immediate response was that it was too far from home, but we both agreed that this was a great way to hopefully shut down all of the "would-be promoters" on the internet. What most of them wouldn't understand though is that fee would only cover the rent on the place and the use of the equipment for the night. There was no mention if this also included insurance, but I doubt it. And from there the Owner For The Night would need to hire a staff of workers including a flagman, an announcer, pit stewards, concession help, an ambulance crew, etc. and that is all before you even consider posting a purse for the night. Any takers?

Oskaloosa will be a very dangerous #3 seed during this week's Boy's State Basketball Tournament. Normally I would be planning on attending all four championship games on Friday the 8th, but instead we will be attending the Dylan Scott concert in downtown Des Moines that night. I met the young country music star as we waited in line for barbecue in St. Louis before Friday's Dome race and after talking about racing and music for twenty minutes I checked his tour schedule and found that he had this Iowa concert booked.

The World of Outlaw Sprint Cars had a couple of good shows on the dirt in Las Vegas this week with Tim Shaffer winning on Wednesday and Donny Schatz stole one away from Daryn Pittman in the final two turns on Thursday. Schatz has done that before, so perhaps the more newsworthy "last lap pass" that night was made by 17-year-old Hailie Deegan to win the NASCAR K&N West Series opener. Hailie is the daughter of X-Games star Brian Deegan and she has been racing on the dirt with the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, but obviously this was just a bit different.

That's all for today as I now head up to Iowa City to give one last cheer for Hawkeye senior Nicholas Baer. This is a true Iowa success story of a young man coming to the team as a walk-on and then working his tail off to become a valuable part of the team and being named the Big Ten's Sixth Man of the Year his sophomore season.
