Final Michigan Points for 2019

While some might say that they are behind the times, as a race fan I am envious of the state of Michigan. They have one set of Late Model rules, the UMP Supers that race weekly at several tracks in the state where the car counts often require a B-Main. And they have two classes of Modifieds, the UMP "Open" Modifieds and the IMCA sanctioned or "type" Modifieds that some tracks still refer to as B-Modifieds. But there really are no Sport Mods, B-Mods, E-Mods, Midwest Mods or any other kind of Limited Modified classes running in little regional groups where a car is legal at one track, but not at another.

Honestly, I don't ever see other states being able to reel in the multiple divisions of Late Models and Modifieds to where there would only be one, but I do hope that Michigan stays just like it is for many years to come!

Ryan Vanderveen returns to the top of the Michigan state point standings that are tabulated using the same 5-point scale that we use in the All Iowa Points. This is Vanderveen's second title in four years having also being the top point man in 2016, the first year that we started tracking the state. This year the driver from Six Lakes had eleven feature wins within his twenty top five finishes allowing him to edge out runner-up David Mielke by a twelve point margin. Mielke was the 2016 and 2017 Modified state champion and finished an impressive fifth during his rookie season in the Late Models last year and in 2019 he won five times in his Late Model and scored six feature wins in his Modified where you will see him in eighth in those standings. Dona Marcoulier is third in this year's Late Model points equaling his finish in 2016 and 2017.

After being the runner-up to A.J. Ward last year, Matt Szecsodi climbs to the top of the Michigan Modified standings in 2019 for his first championship. Winning ten times in twenty-two top five finishes allowed the driver from Clio to be at the top even though runner-up Myron DeYoung scored points three more times with twenty-five top fives. Myron was a winner seven times and another DeYoung, Brenten, is next in line with six feature wins on the season.

Ryan Ruhl finished third in 2017 and last year he tied for the Michigan Sprint Car points title with Chad Blonde. This year though Ruhl rules the roost by himself on the strength of twelve top five finishes including four feature wins. Ohio driver Phil Gressman finished just three points back after posting four feature wins on the season as well, while Gregg Dalman improved two spots from where he finished in 2018 to rank third this season.
