By winning the Modified feature on Saturday October 26th during Shiverfest at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Austen Becerra broke the tie with Ethan Braaksma to lock in his second All Iowa Points Modified championship. It has been a phenomenal three years for the young speedster from Carthage, Illinois, who captured his first AIP Modified championship in his first full season in the division in 2022 and he finished second, just nine points behind the 2023 champ Jeff Larson in his "sophomore" season.
In 2024 Becerra captured twenty-one feature wins in thirty-nine top five points paying finishes to edge out Braaksma who charged out of the gate early winning five times before most drivers even had their car to a track to start the season. After leading the points big early in the season, Becerra picked up the lead towards the end of the regular season only to see Braaksma come charging back to put the race in a tie with a win at Maquoketa's Fall Nationals. Ethan's day atop the standings is likely coming soon as he also scored twenty-one victories in thirty-eight top five outings.
After finishing ninth last season, Jed Freiburger made his way to the podium on the strength of fourteen wins in thirty-two top fives. Veteran driver Troy Cordes who is near the top of our Cumulative standings that will be released over the Holidays had another great year in fourth, Chris Zogg who held the top spot in the standings for a week at mid-season was fifth, Arizona transplant Tim Ward finished sixth and former champions Jeremy Mills and Jeff Larson were next in line. Colorado native Tripp Gaylord cracked the top ten for the first time while three-time champion Kelly Shryock filled out the top ten.
The driver who is scoring the most points in the Modified division for the first time is our Newcomer of the Year and that title goes to Hamilton, Missouri, traveler Jace Whitt who placed 39th on this list.
The two Modified honors brings Becerra's total count of All Iowa Championships to three as he was also the best of the Four Cylinders in 2014 and if you check back to this year's Late Model standings you will find him in the 20th position after running the class for just the back half of the season.
