Locked in the chase for the IMCA Late Model National Championship with Cory Dumpert heading into September, Sterling, Illinois, based driver Travis Denning made some extra road trips that he likely would not have made. And while he would come up short in that quest, the extra effort including a feature win at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan on September 20th was enough to give him a slim two-point edge over defending champion Tommy Elston for his first All Iowa Points Late Model Championship.
It was a solid year for Denning who found victory lane fourteen times in twenty-eight top five outings and he now becomes the twenty-fourth driver to earn an All Iowa Points title in the division. Twelve of those drivers are now in the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame!

Elston had an opportunity to get a share of the title, which would have been his second straight, with a win at Shiverfest this past Saturday, but after leading mid-race he slipped to third at the checkers for his twenty-ninth top five run. Twelve of those found him in victory lane.
Finishing third in this year's standings is three-time champion Matt Ryan who had the most top five finishes in the division with thirty-four, but just three of those were wins worth five points in this system. Evan Miller who was at the top of these standings mid-season finished in fourth while Denny Woodworth was fifth.
National Late Model Driver of the Year Bobby Pierce performed so well in his limited schedule on AIP tracks that he ranked sixth in these standings ahead of Nick Marolf, Zach Zeitner and the runner-up last year Andy Nezworski.
The Newcomer of the Year is Mitch Morris who got out of the gate quickly with a win on opening night at Davenport and he would add two more victories on his way to a tenth place finish in the All Iowa Points.
One more All Iowa Points paying event is on the calendar for this weekend at the Park Jefferson Speedway and with its conclusion we will have the final standings in the Modifieds, Limited Mods, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Four Cylinder next in the days following. The final standings in the three Sprint Car classes were posted here earlier.
