Final Midwest Pavement Late Model Points For 2023

When it was announced early in the season that this would be the final year of racing for the Rockford Speedway, I checked my calendar and picked out a couple dates to make the trip over to get one last view of the historic quarter-mile paved oval. This would also satisfy my goal of getting to at least one pavement race a year, but when questionable weather kept me from going it came down to one last chance this past Saturday only to have other plans get in the way. It was impressive seeing videos from Rockford with packed grandstands on a cold day where fans had to park elsewhere since the process of turning the old facility into a commercial property had already begun.

I will cherish the memories of the several trips that I made to Rockford over the years including a Tuesday night visits from NASCAR stars, a couple of National Short Track Championship Sundays and my final trip there for a Bahama Brackets National. From tracking these points I noted that there was a solid increase in the Late Model car count at Rockford this season and it will be interesting to see what those drivers do going forward. Will they now run at Madison on Friday nights or will they move to the Super Late Model division and go to the Grundy County Speedway. Or will they sell their race cars and take up another action sport like skydiving or pickleball? Will any of the pavement tracks in the region move to Saturday night to fill the void left by Rockford's closing? 

It will be interesting to see how this evolves, but with the Final Lap being completed at Rockford I can now, for the seventh time, give you my annual rundown for the points in both the Super Late Models and the Late Model divisions that race on the paved tracks here in the upper Midwest.

In the Supers Brock Heinrich ends the three year reign of Justin Mondeik, who slipped to fourth this season, to take his title in these standings. Heinrich was a four-time feature winner in his fourteen top five finishes this season. In 2022 Mark Eswin was just one point shy of sharing the title with Mondeik and this year his falls just two markers short as he again takes runner-up honors with six wins in thirteen top fives. Grundy County Speedway regular Eddie Hoffman rolls home third this year improving from a twelfth place ranking in '22. The veteran Chicagoland speedster had three wins in thirteen top fives.

Seven years of tracking these points and now seven championships for Jacob Goede in the Late Model division. With wins coming at both Elko and La Crosse to bring that total to eight, Goede rang up twenty-six top five finishes on the season. With his fourth win of the season in that final event at Rockford, Jon Reynolds Jr. secured the runner-up spot with sixteen top-fives and Jesse Bernhagen ranks third after scoring nine victories in fourteen top five outings.

Final Indiana Points For 2023

The 2023 racing season has wrapped up in the state of Indiana and this is the eight year that we have tracked the Indiana Points using the same 5-point scale that we use for the All Iowa Points. Unfortunately in Indiana we still have two tracks that, in this day and age, still do not share their results in a manner where you can even get the top five finishers from a feature race. One of them is the Montpelier Motor Speedway that, get this, uses MyRacePass to sign drivers in, but does not then use it for lineups and results. For all I know they may be running a makeup race next weekend, but since I can't get the results out of them anyway.......The other track is the Shady Hill Speedway where they put out a story each week that only includes the top three finishers and we'll talk about that in a couple of classes below.

The most dominant driver in the state this year was Indiana Points Modified champion Derek Losh. The 2020 champion returned to the top of the charts in 2023 scoring twenty-three feature wins in his twenty-eight top five finishes giving him a 72 point cushion over runner-up Jamie Lomax. A regular at Shady Hill and a three-time Indiana Points champion (2016, 2018-19), Lomax recorded fourteen top three finishes including eight feature wins. Third goes to Dillon Nusbaum who was an eight time winner in sixteen top fives. The driver from Spencerville ranked fifth in last year's final standings.

The traditional Sprint Cars without wings still rule the roost in Indiana so it is the only state where we track the division and there is a first-time champion this year in Arizona native Tye Mihocko. Posting a state leading thirty-one top five finishes including six wins, Mihocko edges out Jadon Rogers and Jordan Kinser for the championship. Rogers picked off nine wins in twenty-five top five finishes while Kinser was a five-time feature winner in twenty-two points earning efforts.

Chad Stapleton adds his name to the list of Indiana Points Late Model champions picking up seven wins in nineteen top finishes. Last year Chad tied for second behind champion Steve Peeden who slipped to tenth this season. The runner-up is Lynn Johns, a weekly racer at Shady Hill who got credit for eleven race nights where he finished third or better including four feature wins. Tyler Cain joins the podium in third winning five times in ten top five finishes.

Ethan Barrow was the class of the Winged Sprint Car field earning his second straight and fourth overall Indiana Points championship. Barrow garnered eleven feature wins in his sixteen top five race nights. John Paynter Jr. was a distant second with one win in twelve top fives while Kentucky's Dillan Baldwin placed third with eight top fives including one victory.
