Midwest drivers Terry McCarl and Brian Brown both found victory lane with the World of Outlaws this week as McCarl won the second night of action in Sin City on Thursday night before Brown won his second career WoO event on Saturday in Tucson. Both drivers will be considered top contenders for the first ever championship with the National Sprint League and a third "favorite" for that title was added to the list this week when it was announced that Californian Tim Kaeding would be spending six months in the Midwest to pursue not only the NSL, but both the Knoxville and Husets Speedway championships as well.
In other Sprint Car action from out west Saturday night Seth Bergman won the Silver Cup for the 360 Winged Sprints at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California, while Richard VanderWeerd was the best of the USAC/CRA non-winged warriors at Perris Auto Speedway outside of Long Beach. The updated Back Stretch National Sprint Car points can be found below.
Rodney Sanders and Phillip Houston were winners in USMTS Modified action in Las Cruces, New Mexico. For Houston it was the first ever USMTS win for the driver from Odessa, Texas, who currently ranks fourth in the Gulf Coast Border Region Points. It was another impressive run for Fargo driver Austin Arneson Saturday night as he advanced from the 18th starting spot to finish third behind Cade Dillard. Arneson now leads both the Rookie Points and the region points as perhaps a new group of drivers are set to to control the USMTS. Six of the top ten finishers from Saturday are Rookie-of-the-Year contenders and you had to search all the way down to 22nd in the rundown before you found one of the series stalwarts, Zack Vanderbeek. Todd Staley's Modified Masters conclude a three-day weekend with action today at Las Cruces.
Only twenty-one Late Models signed in to battle for the $6,000 top prize at the Southern All Stars "Bama Bash". The event had been postponed for a week at the East Alabama Speedway where Chris Madden, Randy Weaver and Riley Hickman won heat races on Saturday. The main event runs today.
Donald McIntosh was the best of a twenty-four car field at the North Georgia Speedway to earn the $4,000 top prize. The Late Model schedule hopes to be a little better blessed by weather next weekend and the current Back Stretch National Late Model points can be found below.
I am now in countdown mode as I look forward to my first race of 2015 this coming Friday at the Beatrice Speedway. I have often considered going to the IMCA Spring Nationals at the southeast Nebraska facility, but for one reason or another I have never made the trip. Not only am I looking forward to the wide variety of drivers that traditionally compete in this event, but it will also immediately satisfy my goal of attending at least one new track every race season. Okay, so let's check on how those extended forecasts are doing!
Beatrice, Nebraska Friday March 13th - Mild with plenty of sun and 69
Donnellson, Iowa Saturday March 28th - Windy, a little p.m. rain and 48
Burlington, Iowa Saturday April 11th - Mostly cloudy, a little rain and 57
