Thursday Notebook: June 16, 2016

The thermometer went all the way up to 98 degrees here in Mount Pleasant Wednesday which was a big reason why I decided to sit out a night rather than making the trip up to Osky. Apparently several drivers had the same thing in mind as just 48 signed in and I have to say that this is starting to scare me a bit. One of the things that I have always bragged about as a race fan is the fact that I am able to go weekly racing four nights a week without driving more than 85 miles from my home and obviously that "fourth night" is the Wednesdays that I often spend at the Southern Iowa Speedway, a tradition that goes all the way back to my teenage years which, for those of you who don't know me personally, was a long, long, long time ago. Only seven IMCA Modifieds were on hand last night and let's just say that you can't count on three of them, Kyle Strickler (North Carolina), Cody Laney (California) and Ethan Dotson (California) being there every week.

I'm not sure what else promoter Mike VanGenderen can do to pull in more cars as he has offered "Tow Cards", free driver nights and increased start money, but for whatever reasons the counts have continued to dwindle. So, for what it's worth, and granted for my own selfish reasons as well, I challenge you drivers to either return to the Southern Iowa Speedway soon, or make that first ever trip to Osky, whatever your case may be. Otherwise, I can guarantee you that you will miss it should it ever go away!

The Wapello County Fair in Eldon is traditionally one of the first county fairs to be held in Iowa and they will be hosting two nights of racing action this year. TONIGHT features the IMCA Stock Cars racing for a $1,000 top prize along with the Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. There is an update to the flyer that you see here as Sines Construction has added $100 each to the winner's check for the Sport Mods and the Hobby Stocks so I am not only looking forward to picking out my favorite "fair food", but also to see who shows up to chase this kind of money around the "Super 1/2-Mile".

Then tomorrow night (Friday) I will return to Eldon in more of an official capacity as the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders will headline the grandstand entertainment in what I believe to be the first appaearance ever there for the regional 360 c.i. winged sprint car series. If not, my announcing partner Bill Wright will be sure to correct me! And speaking of Bill don't forget to bookmark his new website OpenWheel101 to keep up with all of the Sprint Car news throughout the region and the nation. The 305 Sprints, the Iowa Sportsman Series and Vintage Cars will also be in action for what should be a fun night in Eldon. Hope to see you there!

I just saw this item today and, as usual, there will be many who will make negative comments about it and claim that negative crap on social media is only going to help a track or the sport improve. Usually those same people who are making those comments are the ones who are the biggest problem. And, as I always say when somebody writes one of these pieces, what took you so long to realize it?? Positively Racing has been here since 2009!

And, as a late afternoon addition to the Notebook, I felt that this needed to be shared as well.

I am having a good time keeping up on the action in neighboring states by tracking their points in a similar fashion as what I have been doing for years with the All Iowa Points and I hope that you find them a bit interesting as well. You never know, you might be at a special event later this season and one of these names will pop in and you will already know that he is one of the top competitors in his home state.
