NKF Tour 2000 (Part Four)

We pick up the recap of NKF Tour 2000 with the 4th Annual Budweiser Hobby Stock Nationals at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. This would be the third year in a row that promoters Terry and Jenni Hoenig would include this spectacular event on the NKF Tour and with $1,000 going to the Hobby Stock winner there was quite a buzz when a local favorite claimed the big money.

Buck Earns One Thousand Of Them At Budweiser Hobby Stock Nationals

Donnellson, Iowa – The Fourth Annual Budweiser Hobby Stock Nationals came right down to the wire for the second year in a row and after two former champions of the event fell to the wayside it was Jason Buck of Danville who stepped up for the $1,000 victory. In the companion NKF Tour Modified feature Tony Fraise of Montrose made his way to victory lane.

Steve Holthaus, who won the inaugural Budweiser Nationals in 1997, pulled out to a sizable lead at the drop of the green in the forty-lap headliner. The man on the charge though was event’s defending champion Ryan Meyer. Meyer started eleventh and steadily worked his way to the front taking the lead just shy of the mid-race point. Holthaus kept pace with Meyer and was making a challenge to regain the lead when, during a caution period on lap thirty-four, his right rear tire went down ending his chances. On the restart Meyer had the cars of Jason, Buck, Dan Jones and Jason Rohde glued to his bumper with Buck able to pull alongside on two occasions. With two laps remaining and the top two running side-by-side, Meyer’s right rear tire went flat turning the lead over to Buck. Rohde, the 1998 race winner, then made his bid as the field took the white flag, but he came up just short as the crowd went wild over Buck’s victory. Jones held on for third followed by Lynn Panos and Dave Breuer.

Jeff Gerhardt paced the NKF Modified field for the first eleven laps of their main event until Tony Fraise was able to run him down from a fourth row start. Mark Burgtorf, who started eleventh, moved into the second spot late but could not close in on the leader as Fraise earned his first Tour victory. Gerhardt held down the third spot followed by Darin Thye and John Bull.

While the NKF Hobby Stocks now have a month off before their next action, the NKF Tour Modifieds will be running for $1,500-to-win on Wednesday night, August 16th, at 34 Raceway in Burlington.

You will notice that there were never any NKF Tour events scheduled during the week of the Knoxville Nationals. I started attending that event way back in 1976 and I wanted to make sure that I would not be missing any if I had control of the schedule. So next up was a big paying mid-week show at 34 Raceway near Burlington.

Fraise Earns Second Straight NKF Tour Win At 34 Raceway

Burlington, Iowa – Tony Fraise of Montrose waited until the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure made its way into his neck of the woods before making his first start on the Tour and, after his win Wednesday night at 34 Raceway, he is now two-for-two. Forty NKF Tour Modifieds turned out for the evening all looking for the $1,500 top prize.

Pole-sitter Jim Roach moved to the lead at the drop of the green with Fraise in hot pursuit. Defending Tour champion, and defending 34 Raceway Modified champion, Bruce Hanford soon joined the battle for the top spot after starting in the eighth position. Whenever Fraise would challenge Roach on the high-side, Hanford would make a bid down low and vice versa. A yellow flag slowed the field with just two laps to go and on the restart Roach tried to protect the bottom. Fraise seized the opportunity and hooked the cushion to shoot by on the outside to lead the final laps for his second straight NKF Tour win after taking the checkers last Tuesday at Donnellson. Roach held off Hanford for second while Rich Smith and Rick Hixson completed the top five.

The NKF Tour Modifieds return to 34 Raceway on Saturday and Sunday, September 2nd and 3rd, as part of the annual Pepsi USA Nationals.

It was a true two-day show for the Tour Modifieds on the Labor Day weekend with qualifying on Saturday night and the feature on Sunday.

Bull Charges To His First NKF Tour Win At 34 Raceway

Burlington, Iowa – John Bull of Rock Island, Illinois, had finished in the top five eleven times during the first three years of the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure, more than any other driver without a victory. That changed on Sunday night as Bull went flag to flag for the Modified feature win during the Pepsi USA Nationals at 34 Raceway near Burlington.

It was a dominating weekend for Bull as he won his heat race and the Pole Dash on Saturday night to set up his Sunday night performance. Darin Thye kept the pressure on Bull throughout the twenty-five lap main event pulling even with the leader on a couple of occasions. Corey Dripps, the 1998 NKF Tour champion, found the cushion to his liking and made a late charge to make it a three car battle, but Bull was up to the challenge to collect the victory. With his second place finish Thye now has seven “top fives” on the Tour without a win, while Dripps added to his career totals of seven wins and eighteen top five finishes on the NKF Tour with his third place run. Tom Goble and Mark Burgtorf rounded out the top five.

The NKF Tour Modifieds have two events on the schedule this weekend with a first-ever trip into Minnesota at the Fairmont Raceway on Friday night, followed by a return trip to the East Moline Speedway on Sunday night. The NKF Tour Hobby Stocks will also be in action at Fairmont.

The Fairmont Raceway would hold the distinction of being the first track in Minnesota to host an NKF Tour event and two Minnesota drivers would successfully defend their home turf.

Porth and Soules Win In First NKF Tour Minnesota Visit

Fairmont, Minnesota – The National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure made its first visit to Minnesota Friday night with Greg Porth of Heron Lake and Rick Soules of Worthington stepping up to take the checkers at the Fairmont Raceway.

Gary Shumski returned to action for the first time in 2000 and snared the early lead in the Modified headliner from fellow front row starter Jerry Goebel. Porth, who started third, picked up the chase and made repeated challenges on the lead with no success. As the laps clicked away Troy Swearingen moved into contention to make it a three car battle for the point with the leaders racing three-wide through the turns on two occasions. With two laps to go, Porth found enough of a bite on the inside to slide past Shumski coming off turn four to take the lead and the win. Shumski held back Swearingen for third with Roger Neilsen and Denny Anderson completing the top five.

In the Hobby Stock headliner, Soules passed early leader Kurt Fothergill on the second lap and cruised to the NKF Tour victory in his first Tour appearance. Doug Jenkins held off a hard charging Mel Halverson to finish second while Dan Hanselman’s fourth place effort was enough for him to takeover the Tour’s point lead. Dan Thate completed the top five.

Rich Smith Tops NKF Tour Modifieds At East Moline’s Fall Classic

East Moline, Illinois – Rich Smith of Davenport, Iowa, made a fast charge to the front and then walked away from the rest of the field to take the checkers in the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified main event at the East Moline Speedway Sunday night.

Tom Goble picked up the early lead in the twenty-five lap main event with defending NKF Tour champion Bruce Hanford in hot pursuit. As the two leaders diced it out at the front of the field, Smith was on the move from a fourth row starting spot. After a lap eight restart, Smith made his move past Goble on the inside groove of the high banked quarter-mile and never looked back as he picked up his second win of the 2000 Tour and his third career NKF victory. Hanford tightened the point race with a second place finish followed by the ageless veteran Ronnie Weedon in third. Goble and Troy Emerick completed the top five.

The NKF Tour Modifieds and Hobby Stocks now look ahead to a doubleheader weekend on Saturday night September 23rd at the Independence Motor Speedway and on Sunday night September 24th at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton.

Through this point on the schedule the NKF Tour had raised $9,841 for Dialysis Units in the local communities that had hosted events.

Let's take a moment to recognize the Contingency Sponsors for NKF Tour 2000. You will notice that there are fewer than there was during the first two Tours so it looks I was slipping a bit on this aspect of the series.

I also found the following proposal letter to Ron Milhous at Midwest Motorsports, something that I had completely forgotten until going through this recap. Obviously nothing ever came of it, but I gave it a try! (Note: Edited for confidentiality reasons)

Dear Ron:

Thank you very much for sponsoring the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure now for three straight years. Your support is greatly appreciated by the Tour and the drivers who are fortunate enough to earn one of your certificates.

As we discussed on the phone recently, I have had several Stock Car drivers ask why their division is not included on the NKF Tour, especially given the fact that the Stock Car, or equivalent, division ran with us at twenty-six of our events on the 2000 schedule.  During the past off-season I had considered the option of adding the Stock Cars, but when Midwest Motorsports was announced as the sponsor of the IMCA Series I dropped the idea for two reasons. First, I did not want to be perceived as a “competitor” of what IMCA was doing, and second, I did not want to jeopardize the relationship between Midwest Motorsports and the NKF Tour.

Looking ahead to 2001, I would again consider adding the Stock Car division to the NKF Tour, but only under one of the two following scenarios.

1. If IMCA decides to discontinue their current Stock Car Series, I would not hesitate to add the division to the NKF Tour.

2. If the IMCA Stock Car Tour continues in 2001 with Midwest Motorsports as the title sponsor, I would add the Stock Cars to the NKF Tour as well if Midwest Motorsports also served as the title sponsor for the division. While I know this would ruffle some feathers at IMCA, they would with it if the same business is supporting both series. As the new kid on the block, the NKF Tour would adjust its Stock Car schedule accordingly to avoid doubling up on the IMCA schedule so that drivers could pursue both series if they desire.

If the Stock Car division is added to the NKF Tour, we would apply the same principles that we have used with the Modifieds and the Hobby Stocks. The primary goal of our Tour is to visit as many different communities as possible to spread the word about kidney disease and to raise money for the local Dialysis Units. To do this we have adopted the following strategies:

1. We will run the rules of the track that we are at. We will make sure that an IMCA legal Stock Car is also legal at the track, however tracks such as Tipton, West Liberty, Farley, etc., may allow some things that IMCA doesn’t. Some of the events may even be IMCA Sanctioned, such as the opener at Oskaloosa.

2. The track will decide how the Claim rule will be used, if any. We may have events with no claim, some with an exchange option and some, such as the IMCA sanctioned races, with a straight claim. As with our current divisions, the drivers will know that if they refuse a claim they will be awarded “last-place points” for that night and will not lose their NKF Tour Points already accumulated for the season. They will, however, be subject to any penalties that the track or sanctioning body imposes for the refusal of the claim.

3. We do not have a “minimum purse” that is required. The only thing that we ask the promoters to do is to pay tow money that is equal to, or greater than the combination cost of a pit pass and the entry fee.

4. We will use only a driver’s best twelve finishes in Tour races for his or her point total. By doing this a driver can miss events that are too far away, don’t pay well enough, or conflict with their regular work or race schedule, without destroying their chances to compete for the point title.

I would plan on charging the Stock Car drivers a $15 Entry Fee at each event with the promoter having the option to pay that figure to the NKF Tour himself. If we schedule twenty to twenty-five events I would want to pay a $7,000 total point fund and if we get more than twenty-five races we would post an $8,000 total point fund with the projected breakdown as follows:

            20 to 25 Events                                               26 or more

            1. $1,500                                                         1. $1,600

            2. $1,300                                                         2. $1,300

            3. $1,000                                                         3. $1,100

            4. $800                                                            4. $1,000

            5. $600                                                            5. $800

            6. $500                                                            6. $650

            7. $400                                                            7. $500

            8. $350                                                            8. $400

            9. $300                                                            9. $350

            10. $250                                                          10. $300

In both point fund structures, any driver who competes in twelve or more events and does not finish in the top ten in the point standings will be awarded $150. Of course both of these point funds are assuming “a little help” from the Stock Car division sponsor.

Keep me up-to-date as to your future plans with the Best of the Midwest Series and let me know your thoughts on the prospects of adding the Stock Cars to the NKF Tour. Once again, thank you for your support of our Tour from the very beginning, and thank you for your time in considering this matter.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey P. Broeg

NKF Tour Director

It would appear that the events at both Independence and Vinton were weathered out as our next story and results come from another great annual event that we were honored to become a part of, the Hawkeyeland Championship at the Tipton Speedway.

Tipton’s NKF Hawkeyeland Titles To Megonigle and Gray

Tipton, Iowa – The annual Hawkeyeland Championship always draws a large field of cars to the quarter-mile Tipton Speedway and the 2000 edition of this event was no different with 41 Modifieds and 42 Hobby Stocks on hand to do battle. At the checkers it was Scott Megonigle of Cedar Rapids and Cliff Gray of Waterloo taking the wins in the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified and Hobby Stock mains respectively.

Terry Lawson assumed the point at the start of the thirty-lap Modified feature with Tom Goble in hot pursuit. Scott Megonigle soon got by Goble and on lap six he was able to slip past Lawson for the lead. Mike Zogg was the man on the move as he came from the eight starting spot to challenge Lawson for second and when the checkers flew Zogg had closed Megonigle’s advantage down to two car-lengths. Lawson held on for third, Robbie Verbeck came from eleventh to take fourth while John Bull completed the top five.

In the twenty-lap NKF Hobby Stock headliner, Cliff Gray started on the pole position and never looked back as he cruised to victory. Jason Udelhofen was able to keep Gray in his sights throughout as he finished second while Chip Kohl, Bill Butteris and Jarvis Eastlick completed the top five in the non-stop event.

Blue Grass, Iowa – Bruce Hanford held of the challenges of both Rich Smith and John Bull to earn his second career victory in the annual Gary Reinhart Memorial event at Hawkeye Raceway Sunday. It was also the second National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure feature win for Hanford, the defending Modified Tour champion, in 2000.

The lead trio was able to separate themselves from the rest of the field as they entertained the sun soaked afternoon crowd with a thrilling three-way battle on the high-banked dirt track. There were several occasions over the final laps where they raced three-wide through the corners with Smith actually nosing ahead to lead lap twenty-nine in the thirty-five lap event. Hanford was not to be denied however, as he came right back on the outside to regain the lead and the win. Smith edged out Bull for the runner-up spot while Mike Garland and Leland Bushong prevailed in an entertaining battle farther back to take fourth and fifth.

The NKF Tour returns to Hawkeye Raceway this Sunday afternoon, October 8th, as the Tour’s Hobby Stocks will take part in the 15th Annual Street Stock 50. The NKF Tour Modifieds will now prepare for their final event of the season at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson on October 21st.

With all of the traveling and work on the NKF Tour, the frequency of appearances by the Back Stretch column in Hawkeye Racing News dropped off dramatically but after a cold weekend wiped out the Tour's scheduled appearance at the Street Stock 50, I had some time to write one up. What follows is the edited version of that column including anything that had to do with NKF Tour 2000.

It has been awhile since the last Back Stretch so here’s a quick review….The Pepsi USA Nationals continues to grow at 34 Raceway. This year’s event was plagued by temperatures in the triple digits (hard to believe the contrast from this past weekend), but once again the racing was top notch. A flat tire haunted Darren Miller, but his charge back to the front to finish a close second to Mark Burgtorf, plus Boone McLaughlin’s run from twenty-sixth to fourth had the crowd buzzing. It was also great to see John Bull pick up his first NKF Tour Modified win after eleven previous top five finishes on the Tour….Friday night of that week found us at the Fairmont Raceway for the NKF Tour’s first ever visit to Minnesota. The Tour was well received by the fans and we had several drivers who told us that they would be shooting for the Tour championship in 2001, especially if we had a few more races in Minnesota. It was the first time back to Fairmont for me since the early 1980’s and the racing was competitive and lightning fast. Greg Porth made a late move around Gary Shumski for the Modified win and Greg was the first driver that I’ve met in victory lane this year who is taller than me. Randy Embrey would have been the first in this category after he won the NKF Tour Hobby Stock race at Stuart, but I couldn’t get across the track in time…..Darren Miller found a bit of redemption on Sunday night as he dominated the Miller Lite Fall Classic at the East Moline Speedway for the $5,000 win. Rich Smith raced to the NKF Modified victory….The fourth weekend of September was a washout as the NKF Tour lost events at both Independence and Vinton….We were back at it the following week at the Tipton Speedway where Scott Megonigle and Cliff Gray picked up Hawkeyeland Championships. Bruce and Tammy Current have done a great job keeping this event, originated at West Liberty, alive and well at Tipton. In between it has also been contested at Burlington, Vinton and Maquoketa.….The rainouts and rescheduling of the previous week created three tracks within thirty miles of each other all running on Sunday afternoon, leaving the Gary Reinhart Memorial at Hawkeye Raceway with its smallest car count ever. The fans were, however, treated to a thrilling three-car battle up front for the entire race as Bruce Hanford held off Rich Smith and John Bull for the win. The Street Stock 50 at Hawkeye was postponed from October 8th to October 15th, however due to prior commitments it will not be an NKF Tour Hobby Stock event as originally planned. And that brings us to the present

We will wrap up the Iowa racing season, as it stands right now, once again with the 2nd Annual Shiverfest event at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson on Saturday October 21st. It will be the final event of the 2000 NKF Tour for the Modifieds and Hobby Stocks, plus the Late Models, Stock Cars and Buddy (Two-Driver) Cars will also be in action. This is a fun afternoon and evening of racing with a Halloween theme as there will be pre-race Hayrack Rides through the pits and post-race Trick or Treating in the pits for the little race fans. Bigger race fans also found some treats on ice last year as well as a few drivers in costume including Catwoman and the Pink Panther. Hot laps are at 4:00 with racing at 4:45. Both NKF Tour titles came right down to the final laps at Donnellson last year and while Ron Barker has this year’s Modified point race locked up, the Hobby Stock champion will be determined as Dan Hanselman holds a slim lead over Doug McCollough.

So we are down to the final event for NKF Tour 2000 and following is our pre-race press release as I want to make sure that all of the sponsors, many of them my close friends, are recognized for their support of our mission.

More Than Just Auto Racing At Lee County’s Shiverfest

Donnellson, Iowa – There will be more than just the racing action on the track for fans and families who attend the 2nd Annual Shiverfest event to enjoy at the Lee County Speedway on Saturday, October 21st. The final originally scheduled race for the state of Iowa will be the final event on the 2000 National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure for Modifieds and Hobby Stocks, plus the Late Models, Stock Cars and Buddy (Two-Driver) Cars will also be in action.

Early arrivals will have the opportunity to enjoy a pre-race Hayrack Ride through the pits to catch a glimpse of how the drivers prepare their machines for the racing to come. All kids in Halloween costume, accompanied by an adult, will be admitted for just a dollar and will be all set to head to the pit area after the show for Trick or Treating with the drivers. At last year’s event several drivers decorated their trailers and a few even donned costumes of their own for the festivities.

With the NKF Tour on hand, the event will once again benefit the Southeast Renal Dialysis Units in Mt. Pleasant, Burlington and Keokuk. Over $2,400 was raised at last year’s show that was used to improve the lives of individuals and their families who are kidney disease patients at these facilities. Several Mt. Pleasant area businesses have already made donations in honor of this event. They include Brown’s Shoe Fit, Becker’s Jewelers, Dickey’s Prairie Home, Welcher’s 66, Edward Jones Investments, McAllister Mini-Storage, KILJ Radio, Mt. Pleasant Tire & Service, The Garden Florist, Dave’s Super Valu, Access Energy Cooperative, Hagge Insurance and Packers Sanitation. More businesses from southeast Iowa will be added to this list of supporters.

Even with all of the other activities, the racing will be in the spotlight with the determination of the 2000 NKF Tour Hobby Stock champion topping the list. Dan Hanselman of Algona has a fourteen- point advantage over Doug McCollough of Webster City and Hanselman can secure at least a tie for the title if he finishes fourth or better. It will be the first time ever to race at the 3/8-mile oval for both drivers so anything can happen. Ron Barker of Dubuque has clinched the NKF Modified championship, but Barker plans to be on hand to try to put an exclamation mark on a fine season. Several of the point fund paying positions in both divisions are still up for grabs with many of the contenders planning to attend.

Late Models, using a spec engine or a restrictor plate, will run for $600-to-win; NKF Modifieds are vying for a $500 top prize; $300 will go to the Stock Car winner; a $250 check awaits the NKF Hobby Stock winner and the Buddy Car winners will pick up a $150 paycheck. Gates open at 1:30 p.m., hot laps are at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 4:45.

After inadvertently naming it while coming in from the cold last year, Jenni Hoenig made this event the tradition that it is by adding several of the "extras" that racin' guys like Terry and I would have never thought of. The Pre-Race Hayrack rides provided by Terry's Dad Harry for some twenty years now was a great touch and Jenni and her daughters Olivia and Chloe also had the grandstand area decorated in a festive Fall fashion. It was a beautiful day for racing and the only "shivers" this year came from some of the scary costumes. The story and results for all five divisions follows.

Megonigle, Bradley, Toland and Lynch Among The Winners at Lee County’s Shiverfest

Donnellson, Iowa – Sunny skies with temperatures in the seventies brought out cars and fans from near and far for the Second Annual Shiverfest at the Lee County Speedway Saturday night. The final event for the 2000 National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure attracted 201 cars in five divisions and raised over $2,800 for the National Kidney Foundation that will go toward patient assistance at the Southeast Renal Dialysis Units in Mount Pleasant, Burlington and Keokuk.

In Modified action, the 1999 NKF Tour champion Bruce Hanford paced the field for the first three laps before Scott Megonigle shot by. Hometown favorite Kevin Cale worked his way up to second mid-race and tried to chase down the leader, but Megonigle was able to maintain his advantage to take his second Tour win in the last three events. Cale, Mark Burgtorf, Hanford and Russ Olson completed the top five. Newly crowned NKF Tour Modified champion Ron Barker finished sixth.

Tim Bradley snared the lead from his front row start in the NKF Tour Hobby Stock main event and held off a late charge from Ryan Meyer to win by a half car length at the checkers. Mike Jones, Greg Johnson and Russell Fett completed the top five. For the second year in a row the NKF Tour Hobby Stock point title would be decided when the final checkered flag dropped at Donnellson as Dan Hanselman of Algona came into the event with a fourteen-point advantage over Webster City driver Doug McCollough. Both drivers made the long tow to make their very first appearance at the Lee County Speedway and both drivers looked good as they qualified out of their heat race. In the feature  Hanselman had the advantage early running near the top five until he was involved in a caution that would force him to restart at the rear. On the restart McCollough was in ninth and needed to stay there or move up, but as the laps wound down he was passed by two more cars that would leave him just four points shy as Hanselman claimed the title.

Rob Toland was unstoppable in the Late Model main event as he walked away from the field for the victory. Jeff Laue held off a late charge from LCS track champion Tommy Elston take the runner-up honors while Mike Smith and Terry Gallaher completed the top five. In the Stock Car headliner, Jim Lynch was able to chase down and pass early leader Milo Veloz Jr. and the held back Brant Fuhs at the srtipe for the win. Phil McClure captured third with Cliff Gray and Brad Holtkamp close behind. With fifty-six Buddy Cars on hand the field was split into two features with the combo of Keith and Brian Renning taking the first win while Derek Coleman and Mark Burns picked up the checkers in the second race.

With the way that the Shiverfest sponsorship was structured, plus the hard working volunteers from the Southeast Renal Dialysis Unit in Mount Pleasant including Sheila Kiesey, Judy Sanders, Jolene Waljasper, Gale Thompson, Roger & Lori Becker, Sandy Phillips, and a few more whose names I didn’t catch, the total amount raised for the Dialysis Unit was an NKF Tour event record of $2,815!

The Third Year’s A “Charm” For The National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour

Mt. Pleasant, Iowa – The National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure recently completed its third, and most successful season thus far, presenting thirty-eight events at twenty-seven different tracks in five states during the 2000 campaign. The NKF Tour, awarded the Outstanding Public Education project nationally by the Foundation during the fall of 1999, is a series of dirt-track Modified and Hobby Stock auto races that creates awareness of kidney disease and raises funds to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by the disease.

At each event on the NKF Tour, representatives from the nearest Dialysis Unit assist with the event in order to raise funds for the Unit. This season $13,415 was raised for the Dialysis Units to use, at their discretion, for patient assistance including transportation costs, additional equipment, or other needs of the dialysis patients and their families. “The sport of auto racing, including the fans, drivers and promoters, should all be very proud of their involvement with the Tour,” commented Tour director Jeff Broeg. “Their participation is making a very positive impact on the people who are battling this disease.” Broeg also noted that during every race night on the NKF Tour the audience is reminded about the early warning signs of kidney disease and the importance of early detection. Having a signed organ donor card is also encouraged. “If just one life is saved through the education process,” said Broeg, “then the entire effort is a success.”

The 2000 NKF Tour was a success on the track as well. The Modifieds contested 37 events with 512 different drivers participating and an average car count of 28.027 per event. Ron Barker of Dubuque, Iowa, won five feature races on the way to his first NKF Tour Modified Championship and the top fifteen drivers in the point standings will earn a portion of a $12,000 point fund. The Hobby Stocks held 23 events this season with 375 different drivers taking part and an average car count of 29.609 per event. Dan Hanselman of Algona, Iowa, edged out Webster City, Iowa, driver Doug McCollough by just four points to earn his first NKF Tour Hobby Stock title. The top fifteen drivers in the final point standings will pick up a check from the $6,000 point fund. The final point standings and the point fund money earned are listed below.

The success of the NKF Tour begins with the track promoters who provide the opportunity to hold the event. For the 2000 season the NKF Tour would like to thank the following promoters: Al Uhrhammer (Hamilton County Speedway and Greenbelt Speedway); Ron Jackson and Johnny Johnson (34 Raceway); Bobby Toland (East Moline Speedway); Joe Hayes and the late Al Frieden (Davenport Speedway and Farley Speedway); Glen, Colleen and Adam Portzen (Adrian Speedway); Joe & Jim Durian (Southern Iowa Speedway and Eldon Raceway); Larry Kaster (Missouri’s I-35 Speedway); Dan & Sandy Danielsen (Hancock County Speedway); Brian & Bruce Peterson (Nordic Speedway); Verne & Kathy Schumann (Hawkeye Raceway); Evan Schoenfish (Park Jefferson Speedway); Dana Benning (Independence Motor Speedway); Martin Games and the Howard County Fair (Cresco Speedway); Larry & Kathleen Kemp (Benton County Speedway); Jeff & Faith Story (CJ Raceway); Kerrianne Izzo (Davenport Speedway); Howard Mellinger (Knoxville Raceway and Crawford County Speedway); Mick Trier (Stuart Speedway); Buzz Paterson (Buena Vista Raceway); Lee & Sue Hansmeier (Echo Valley Speedway); The Hamilton County Fair (Hamilton County Speedway); Mike Hansen and the Kossuth County Fair (Algona Raceway); Joe & Marian Ringsdorf (I-35 Speedway and Fairmont Raceway); Terry & Jenni Hoenig (Lee County Speedway); and Bruce & Tammy Current (Tipton Speedway).

Plans are already underway for the 2001 NKF Tour. For more information, or to explore sponsorship opportunities with the NKF Heartland Tour for a Cure please call (319) 986-5144.

The final point standings and point fund distribution follows:

Now keep in mind that the NKF of Iowa and the Executive Director XYZ never did get one of those prospective title sponsors to "sign on the dotted line" so that $18,000 point fund was paid out of the funds that were meant to compensate me for the time that I was putting in to running the Tour. Can you sense my concern in the final sentence of this Accounting Report that I provided to XYZ?

What a trip down memory lane!! I remember this night like it was yesterday, hard to believe it was 20 years ago. This is my fondest memory of my not near long enough racing career. Thanks for the trip back in time Jeff!!
