NKF Tour 2000 (Part Three)

In Part Two you saw where we had an event that two drivers who had a unique tie to each other won on the same night at Eldon and, as we kick off Part Three of the NKF Tour 2000, the Tour's first trip ever to the CJ Raceway in Columbus Junction produced a similar scenario.

Dripps, Holthaus Conquer CJ

Columbus Junction, Iowa – The two winningest drivers in the three-year history of the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure found their way to victory lane Monday night at the CJ Raceway. Corey Dripps of Cedar Falls captured his seventh career NKF Tour Modified feature win while Steve Holthaus of Cresco survived a wild finish for his fifth career Hobby Stock triumph on the Tour.

Thirty-two Modifieds checked in for what turned out to be a wild night of racing at a facility where nearly an inch of rain the night before left plenty of mud around the edges. Jim Vest used his front row start in the twenty-lap feature to grab the early lead with Scott Hogan in hot pursuit. The race was red-flagged at the midpoint for a grinding crash that all but destroyed the cars of Russ Olson, Larry Herring and Rick Gustin. Thankfully all three drivers escaped injury. When the race resumed Darin Thye got by Hogan with Troy Folkerts following him into third. As Folkerts made his move to the outside of turn one, the two made contact sending both cars over the top of turn two. On the restart Corey Dripps now found himself in second and after a couple of laps of sizing up the leader Vest, Dripps moved by for the lead and the victory. Vest was the runner-up followed by Dean Wagner who came to third from twentieth. Brett Campbell and current NKF Tour point leader Ron Barker completed the top five.

In the fifteen-lap Hobby Stock finale, CJ Raceway regular Kurt Burmeister paced the talent-laden field until the white flag lap. Steve Holthaus moved past the leader heading into turn one and when Burmeister tried to make a comeback there was contact in turn two. The third-place car of Ryan Meyer saw an opportunity at that time and charged to the outside as the top three entered the backstretch. Burmeister and Meyer made contact with both cars going up and over the levee. The race was scored complete on the white- flag lap with the drivers involved in the yellow being scored at the tail. So the official finish was Holthaus, Rod Miller, Harley Hill, Bruce Benzing and Jeremy Moellers.

The NKF Tour Modifieds have three exciting nights of action up next as they run in support of the UMP Late Model SummerNationals. On Sunday night the Mods will run the quarter-mile at the Davenport Speedway followed by visits to the Farley Speedway on Monday night and the Knoxville Raceway on Tuesday night. The next action for the Tour’s Hobby Stocks will be on Thursday, July 13th, at the Stuart Speedway.

Rick Hixson Snares His First NKF Tour Win At Davenport

Davenport, Iowa – After twenty-laps of non-stop two and three wide action on the quarter-mile oval at the Davenport Speedway, Rick Hixson of Orion, Illinois, emerged with his first career National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified victory.

John Bull grabbed the lead at the drop of the green with Bruce Hanford and Dean Wagner in hot pursuit. After a couple of circuits Hixson and Bryan Behning joined in to make it a five-car battle for the top spot. Hixson found the bottom groove to his liking and worked his way into second where he then went to work on Bull. The top two ran laps eight, nine and ten in wheel-to-wheel formation before Hixson established himself as the leader. The top two then pulled away leaving an entertaining battle for third  Bob Dominacki coming from thirteenth to take the spot in the final laps. Behning came home fourth followed by Hanford and Wagner.

Point Leader Barker Cruises To NKF Win At Farley

Farley, Iowa – Ron Barker of Dubuque drew the pole position and, after a grinding crash involving his fellow front row starter, cruised to victory in the twenty-lap National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature Monday night at the Farley Speedway.

John Burbridge jumped the cushion coming off of turn two on the first lap and turned the backstretch wall into a ramp as he launched his Modfied into a series of flips and rolls that carried him halfway down to turn three. The cars of Jerry Miles and Rick Gustin were also eliminated as the rolling car landed on top of them as the field scrambled. All drivers escaped injury.

On the restart Barker was the leader with Kevin Pittman in hot pursuit. That chase ended a few laps later when Pittman’s car shucked its transmission on to the Farley front straightaway. Rich Smith took up the chase from there and although he stayed glued to Barker’s bumper Smith could not mount a challenge. Mark Curwen held off Dan Chapman to finish third while John Bull completed the top five.

Shryock Holds Back Barker For Knoxville NKF Tour Win

Knoxville, Iowa – The famed Knoxville Raceway was in perfect racing condition Tuesday night as Kelly Shryock captured the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified main event.

Shryock started on the outside of the front row and immediately opened up a lead at the drop of the green. Mark Noble worked his way into contention from his fourth row start and by the mid-race point he had Shryock in his sights. As the two Modified heavyweights sized each other up, current NKF point leader Ron Barker and 1998 Tour champion Corey Dripps closed in on the lead duo. On lap twelve, Barker, Noble and Shryock raced three-wide for the lead through turn two with Barker now taking over the second spot. The leaders then split into two pairs for the remainder of the race as Barker made several runs at Shryock only to come up just short at the finish. Dripps was able to get by Noble for third, but Mark fought his way back to earn the position in the final two laps. The winner of last year’s event here, Scott Megonigle, came home in the fifth spot.

The NKF Tour Modifieds have two big events coming up in western Iowa next week. On Wednesday night, July 19th, the Tour will be at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison for a $2,000-to-win event with the added attraction of Winston Cup driver Kenny Schrader. Then on Thursday night the Tour moves north to the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta for a $1,000-to-win event.

A Hobby Stock Only event would be held on the Tour’s first ever visit to Stuart and after his win here we would see Randy Embrey much more often in the events to come.

Embrey From Third To First For Stuart NKF Win

Stuart, Iowa – Randy Embrey of Granger, running in the third position, had the best seat in the house to watch the battle for the lead between Ben Hoesing and Don Wear during the twenty-lap National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Hobby Stock main event Thursday night at the Stuart Speedway. When the top two touched in turn two on lap twelve, Embrey went from being a spectator to the leader as he cruised to his first career NKF Tour victory.

Hoesing out-dragged fellow front row starter Dan Hanselman to take the early lead with Wear and Embrey in hot pursuit. The top three ran in close formation through the first half of the event before the racing contact on lap twelve slowed Hoesing and Wear just enough to allow Embrey to slip by on the outside. Wear held on to finish second in the non-stop event, Hanselman fought his way back up to third followed by the eleventh starter Ryan Griffith and Hoesing.

The NKF Tour Hobby Stocks join the Tour’s Modified division for a western Iowa doubleheader next week on Wednesday night, July 19th, at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison and on Thursday night, July 20th, at the Buena Vista Raceway in Alta.

Promoter Howard Mellinger would put up a big $2,000-to-win for the Modifieds at the next event in Denison with NASCAR's Kenny Schrader competing as a special guest.

Krajicek In The Right Place For Two Grand, Zehr Also a NKF Winner At Denison

Denison, Iowa – Mark Noble’s misfortune turned into a big payday for local driver John Krajicek as he picked up the $2,000 check for winning the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature at the Crawford County Speedway Wednesday night. Jeff Zehr of Manson was victorious in the companion Hobby Stock main event.

It did not take long for Noble to come from the fifth starting spot and overtake pole-sitter Brian Foote for the lead on lap two. The Minnesota driver then put it on cruise control with John Krajicek trying to keep pace. All eyes were focused on Kenny Schrader as he maneuvered Charlie Clark’s modified from a fifth row start into third by lap ten. Schrader searched high, low and in between for a faster way around the half-mile oval and on two occasions he pulled alongside Krajicek for second. With just over one lap to go Noble’s car let out a cloud of smoke on the backstretch allowing Krajicek to pick up the lead and he held off Schrader in the final lap to take the win. John Anderson came home in third followed by Foote and Kelly Shryock.

Jim Lampe paced the NKF Hobby Stock field for the first three laps before Doug McCollough zipped by. Jeff Zehr soon found his way to the front after starting on the fourth row and on a lap ten restart he was able to edge by McCollough to lead the final two laps for the victory. McCollough, Brian Stein, Jon Ziegman and Ron Stein completed the top five.

After running the Tour as a Hobby Stock only event during the first two seasons the Buena Vista Raceway brought the Modifieds to Alta as well during NKF Tour 2000 with Brad McEwan taking the win near his Storm Lake home. In the Hobby Stocks the tech area took down two of the Tour's top point contenders.

Larson Dominates, Smith Inherits As NKF Tour Visits Alta

Alta, Iowa – Adam Larson has had a great 2000 season so far at the Buena Vista Raceway and on Thursday night he continued his winning ways by taking the $1,000 in the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified main event. In Hobby Stock action local driver David Smith picked up the NKF Tour win after the top two finishers, Dan Hanselman and Doug McCollough, were disqualified for rules violations.

Bruce Hanford snared the early lead in the Modified headliner from his pole position start, but when he nearly spun in turn one on the third lap both Rick Gustin and Adam Larson moved by before Hanford could recover. Gustin did his best to hold back the young speedster, but Larson slipped by on the ninth lap and was never again challenged. Gustin maintained the second spot with Hanford taking third followed by Doug Riley and Brad McEwan.

The Hobby Stock main was all Dan Hanselman as he snatched the lead at the start and went flag-to-flag without a challenge. Doug McCollough was able to get by David Smith for second mid-race and that was how the top three took the checkers. However, in the tech area, it was determined that Hanselman was disqualified for running premium fuel while McCollough’s distributor did not meet regulations. This gave the win to Smith with Rod McClurg, Pat Cross, Jamie Andreason and Ben Hoesing completing the top five.

The next action for the NKF Tour Modifieds and Hobby Stocks will be Sunday night, July 23rd, at the Greenbelt Speedway in Eldora.

It was a similar story at the Tour's next event as the Greenbelt Speedway in Eldora added the Tour Modifieds to the card after two years of running the Hobby Stocks only.

Larson Over Gustin Again, Shaffar Takes NKF Tour Win At Eldora

Eldora, Iowa – For the second straight event on the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Adam Larson tracked down Rick Gustin to take the Modified feature win, this time at the Greenbelt Speedway Sunday night. Terry Shaffar dominated a thirty-car field to win the companion NKF Hobby Stock main event.

Gustin started on the pole and after holding back an early challenge from Dan Fetters it looked as if he was set to earn his first career NKF Tour victory. Larson, who started eleventh, had other plans though as he methodically picked his way through the field and pulled even with the leader on lap seventeen. The top two ran lap eighteen side-by-side before Larson found enough of a bite on the inside to move ahead for the victory. Duane Van Deest followed Gustin in for third with Fetters and Danny Wallace completing the top five.

Terry Shaffar drew the outside front row for the Hobby Stock main and never looked back after the drop of the green as he cruised to his first NKF Tour victory. Damon Adams was credited with second followed by Doug McCollough, Kit Hovey and Steve Brannick.

The NKF Tour Modifieds and Hobby Stocks have a busy week ahead of them with a Tuesday night date set for the Echo Valley Speedway in West Union followed by a pair of races at the Hamilton County Fair in Webster City on Thursday and Saturday.

Barker And Lerch Winners In First NKF Tour Visit To Echo Valley

West Union, Iowa – The National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure pulled in to the beautiful Echo Valley Speedway for the first time Tuesday night with Ron Barker of Dubuque and Chad Lerch of Lone Tree taking feature wins in their respective divisions.

Barker drew the outside pole for the twenty-five lap NKF Modified headliner and raced to the lead at the drop of the green. Kevin Pittman took up the chase and when Barker bobbled in turn three on the seventh circuit Pittman was there to take the lead. Barker quickly regained his form and two laps later he was able to get by Pittman and race away to his fifth victory on the 2000 Tour. Pittman was the runner-up followed by Scott Hogan, Dave Thorsten and Chuck Stanton.

The NKF Hobby Stock field included several of the Tour’s top drivers, but it was first-time competitor Chad Lerch who dominated the main event. Lerch grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and was never challenged for the victory. The racing action was intense behind him though including a four-wide battle coming off turn four on the final lap that shook up the top five. Dan Jones finished second with Jason Rohde third Darrin Walch fourth and Steve Holthaus fifth.

The NKF Tour Modifieds and Hobby Stocks will spend two nights at the annual Hamilton County Fair in Webster City this week running both Thursday and Saturday night.

Logue, Shryock, Zehr and McCollough Collect NKF Tour Wins At The Hamilton County Fair

Webster City, Iowa – The National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure spent two evenings at the Hamilton County Fair this week with four different drivers earning feature victories. On Thursday night John Logue captured the $1,000-to-win Modified main event while Jeff Zehr cruised to the Hobby Stock checkers. Then on Saturday night it was Kelly Shryock and Doug McCollough who visited victory lane in the Modifieds and Hobby Stocks respectively.

Logue started from the pole and, after some early challenges from Jason Toppenberg, drove away for the win. Toppenberg held back Rick Gustin for second with Adam Larson and Jeremy Mills completing the top five. Saturday night Shryock jumped into his Modified after a  victory lane photo for his IMCA Stock Car win and passed Scott Olson for the lead on the fourth circuit enroute to the win.  Brad McEwan made a late charge in the final three laps from fifth to finish second with Olson, Toppenberg and Greg Elliott completing the top five.

Zehr was the class of the thirty-car Hobby Stock field on Thursday winning by nearly half a lap over Jerry Dixon, Allen Dixon, Kit Hovey and Brian Stein. Saturday’s feature was much more contested as McCollough took the lead from Allen Dixon mid-race and then held back a late charge from Ryan Griffith, who had started twelfth, to pick up the win. The Tour's first trip to the big half-mile in Mason City was up next and it also saw the first ever engine claim at an NKF Tour event.

Lewerke and Hanselman Repeat NKF Tour Wins At Mason City

Mason City, Iowa – Rich Lewerke and Dan Hanselman both made it a double win weekend on the NKF Tour as they followed up their Saturday night wins in Algona with victories in the NKF Modified and Hobby Stock features respectively at the I-35 Speedway Sunday night.

Pat Graham grabbed the lead from the outside front row of the NKF Modified feature with Ron Pope close behind. As Graham and Pope slugged it out up front, Rich Lewerke was moving toward the front from his third row start and on lap eight he slipped by both drivers to take the lead. With two laps to go and Lewerke now nursing a sick motor Graham made a late charge that came up just short at the finish. Al Hejna finished third and has the dubious distinction being the first driver in the three-year existence of the NKF Tour to have his engine claimed as Terry Zieman bought his motor in the IMCA sanctioned event. Troy Swearingen and Keith Schmitz rounded out the top five.

For the second night in a row Dan Hanselman re-drew the pole position for the main event and he once again moved to the lead at the drop of the green. Earl Webner took up the chase and actually passed Hanselman on the second lap, but a caution before the circuit was completed wiped out the change of position. Webner stayed glued to Hanselman’s bumper throughout the remaining laps and was even able to pull alongside on two occasions, but Hanselman held on for the victory. Nick West, Randy Hadacek and Scott Anderson completed the top five.

A return to Algona will wrap up Part Three of our recap of NKF Tour 2000

Lewerke and Hanselman Reign As NKF Tour Kossuth County Fair Kings

Algona, Iowa – Rich Lewerke of Garner stormed from deep in the field to take the lead late and win the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature at the Algona Raceway Saturday night. Hometown driver Dan Hanselman put his Hobby Stock on cruise control as he captured the checkers in the NKF Hobby Stock main in event.

Loren Pesicka Jr. paced the Modified field for the first thirteen laps in front of a large enthusiastic Kossuth County Fair crowd. On lap fourteen, Jason Cummins was able to slip by Pesicka heading down the backstretch for the top spot. Meanwhile Lewerke, who had started fifteenth, was charging to the front with the seventeenth starter, Ron Pope, and the twenty-third starter, Kevin Stoa, in hot pursuit. Lewerke closed in on Cummins and with sixth laps to go moved into the top spot as Pope tried to follow him through. Pesicka came on strong late to nip Pope for second at the checkers with Stoa and Al Hejna, who started eleventh, completing the top five.

In Hobby Stock action Dan Hanselman out-dragged fellow front row starter Shane Monson for the lead on alp one and was never seriously challenged as he cruised to victory. Monson held off Dan Haugland for the runner-up honors and they were followed across the line by Rob Hughes and Gary Pesicka.
