The Final NKF Tour (Part Three)

We start the month of May with a Hobby Stock Only event at the Stuart Speedway setting the dubious distinction of a record low car count on a bad weather night.

First Win For Roberts Comes During NKF Tour Visit To Stuart

Stuart, Iowa – Hobby Stock driver Steve Roberts of Redfield earned his first career feature win as the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure visited the Stuart Speedway Tuesday night. With ominous weather conditions threatening all evening, including high-winds, hail and a possible tornado just north of the speedway, the event recorded a record-low car count for the Tour and only a handful of die-hard race fans were on hand to witness a pretty good night of racing.

Roberts and Mike Pruitt started the fifteen-lap main event from the front row with Roberts gaining the advantage on the high side in lap one. Jeremy Embrey was the man on a charge though as he swept by both front-runners to take the lead on the second circuit. The caution waved two laps later and during the break the right rear tire on the leader went flat. This handed the lead back to Roberts with Pruitt in hot pursuit. Just past the mid-race point the two made contact pulling the rear bumper loose from Roberts’ car. Track officials had just determined to give the leader the black flag, but before it could be displayed the caution was needed for Doug McCollough who had climbed the wall in turn two. During the caution track officials were able to remove the bumper and Roberts was able to retain the lead, holding off Pruitt over the final laps for his first victory ever. Pruitt was the runner-up followed by defending NKF Tour champion Dan Hanselman in third. Josh Reynolds came home in fourth with Rod Miller making the long tow in from Eldon to finish fifth.

The NKF Tour Modifieds return to action this Saturday, May 5th, at the Adrian Speedway in Missouri while the Tour’s Hobby Stocks now look forward to a Tuesday, May 22nd, date at Hawkeye Raceway in Blue Grass. That event will be the first of three events for the $300 Hawkeyeland Bonus for the Hobby Stocks.

The next event to be completed would be a unique one as it was the one and only appearance of the NKF Tour Modifieds on the pavement racing on the quarter-mile at Hawkeye Downs. Given his asphalt experience the legendary Arlo Becker was the pre-race favorite, but it would be two drivers who would challenge for the Tour championship that would beat Becker to the checkered flag.

Bull’s First Pavement Experience Nets Win At Hawkeye Downs

Cedar Rapids, Iowa – John Bull had never raced on asphalt before, but as the current point leader on the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for Modifieds the Rock Island, Illinois, driver decided to give the pavement a try as the Tour made its first-ever stop at Hawkeye Downs Tuesday night. The results were to his liking as Bull survived the challenges of Darin Duffy and Darin Thye for fifty laps to take the checkered flag and the $600 winner’s purse.

Bull and Thye started the main event from the front row on the Downs’ quarter-mile with Bull snaring the lead at the drop of the green. Duffy, who started fourth, made a nice move at the start to position himself behind Bull in second and the chase was on. As the top three drivers began to distance themselves from the pack, drivers such as Dan Chapman, Arlo Becker and Jerry King were putting on quite a show as they worked their way toward the front.

Duffy and Thye made several attempts to extract the lead from Bull mid-race and with a lap car thrown into the mix, the leaders went three-wide on one occasion with Duffy up high and Thye down on the rumble strips. A caution flag interrupted that action, but the restart added the presence of the fourth place car of Dan Chapman. With the green flag flying once again, Duffy looked up high for the lead while Chapman took advantage of a Thye miscue to takeover third. With two laps remaining Duffy mounted his final charge to the outside of Bull and as the field approached what was to be the white flag the top two were wheel-to-wheel, but a spin in turn two saw the yellow replace the white setting up a two lap shootout.

Bull, who had been nearly perfect all race, got a little loose in turn one on the restart, but he recovered before Duffy could get his nose under him. On the final lap, Duffy made one last charge to the outside in turn three and Chapman went for the opening down low. The two challengers touched and spun as Bull collected the checkers. Thye narrowly avoided the accident and came home as the runner-up with Arlo Becker, Jerry King and Donovan Lodge completing the top five.

The NKF Tour Modifieds return to action tonight (Wednesday) at the Farley Speedway in support of the Budweiser Open Late Model Shootout.

Chapman Prefers NKF Tour Modified Results at Farley

Farley, Iowa – It was the difference between night and day; pavement and dirt; good luck and bad luck. Whatever comparison you want to use, Dan Chapman of Clarence preferred the results of the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified main event at the Farley Speedway Wednesday night. The night before, on the pavement at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, Chapman spun in the final corner of the event while racing for second. On this night he held back the charges of Gus Hughes and Rich Smith to pick up his first Tour victory of 2001.

Chapman outran fellow front row starter Hughes to turn one at the start and those two, along with defending NKF Tour champion Ron Barker, set a blistering early pace. Rich Smith soon joined the leaders and moved into third when Barker’s right front wheel loaded up with mud. As the leaders continued their chase, many eyes were directed mid-pack where Corey Dripps was making an amazing run to the front. Dripps, who started twenty-seventh, was running above the cushion in the corners and was picking off cars at an alarming rate. When the caution waved with just three laps remaining, Dripps had moved all the way up to fifth in just twelve laps.

Hughes tried to make a pass on the inside of Chapman on the restart with Smith tucked in tight for third. Dripps found his high line blocked and dropped back to tenth. Chapman was able to hold back the challenge and as Hughes and Smith swapped the second position over the final two laps, Chapman cruised in for the victory. Hughes prevailed for runner-up honors with Smith, Darin Thye and Russ Olson, who started twelfth, completing the top five. Dripps received the Kosiski Racing Products “Hammer Down” award for his ninth place run.

The NKF Tour Modifieds now prepare for one of their biggest weekends ever with a trip to two tracks in Missouri. On Thursday and Friday, May 17th and 18th the Tour visits Callaway Raceway in Fulton for a $3,000-to-win event and on Saturday night the Modifieds will be looking for a $1,500 top prize at the Wheatland Raceway.

We were all set now for a big weekend in Missouri, but heavy rains would force the postponement of both events to June 28th, 29th and 30th. The bad weather continued as the Tuesday night show at Hawkeye Raceway near Blue Grass was canceled due to wet grounds and record low temperatures so next up to challenge Mother Nature was the Greene County Speedway for the Tour's first ever visit to Jefferson, Iowa. That race also fell to the weather making it five in a row so we were now on our way to eastern Illinois to try to break the streak with a stop at the Vermilion County Speedway in Danville. This event would produce perhaps our second most famous NKF Tour feature winner.

Owens Downs Stellar NKF Field At Vermilion

Danville, Illinois (May 25) – Newport, Tennessee, modified ace Jimmy Owens fought off the early challenges of Dan Hamstra and then cruised to victory in the thirty lap Modified feature Friday night at the Vermilion County Speedway. Sixty-one cars were on hand as the Danville, Illinois, speedplant hosted the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure for the first time.

Owens, the former UMP Modified National Champion, outran pole-sitter Chuck Haga at the drop of the green. Hamstra started third and was quickly at the front making a challenge on Owens for the lead on the inside groove. The Tennessee driver never flinched and opened up a solid advantage over the field. Wes Steidinger was the man on the move as he wrestled second away from Hamstra late in the race, but he could not make up much ground on Owens who picked up the $1,000 win. Steidinger and Hamstra were next in line followed by Arby Burton and Bryan Clendenen who had started fifteenth.

The NKF Tour Modifieds and Hobby Stocks return to the state of Iowa on Memorial Day Monday night for their annual visit to the Hancock County Speedway in Britt.

Next on our schedule was what had become our regular Memorial Day stop at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt.

Significant Win For Pope, Haugland Inherits At Britt’s NKF Tour Stop

Britt, Iowa (May 28) – A quick motor change and a late pass for the lead was just what Ron Pope needed to shake off the sour luck that had latched on to him during the first two months of the 2001 season as the Mason City driver took the Modified feature win at the Hancock County Speedway Monday night. In Hobby Stock action, Dan Haugland inherited the victory when apparent winner Jeff Zehr refused a claim during the annual Memorial Day appearance by the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure.

Ron Pope knew after hot laps that his Modified #45 did not have the power to compete so his crew jumped into action and completed a motor change just in time for their driver to finish fourth in the second heat race. A good re-draw put Pope on the outside of row one for the twenty-five lap main event, but it was pole-sitter Jon Wood who sprinted out to the early lead. Kevin Stoa, who is always tough to beat at HCS, was on the move from his third row start and actually snared the lead from Wood during the twelfth lap only to have a caution wipe it out. On the restart Stoa continued his assault on the lead, but a lap later he suddenly slowed and exited the track. Pope was right there to pick up the chase and made a nifty move on the outside of Wood in turn one for the lead and the win ten laps later. In victory lane Pope stated how significant it was for him to win a NKF Tour event as he lives and competes with just one kidney. Brad Bakken edged out Wood for second with Scott Olson and Rod Scheuermann completing the top five.

A huge field of thirty-six Hobby Stocks was pared down to twenty-four A-Main starters with Jeff Zehr pacing the field for the entire fifteen-lap distance. During post-race ceremonies local driver Tony Smidt claimed Zehr’s engine and when Zehr refused to sell he was relegated to last place. That put Dan Haugland into victory lane for his first career NKF Tour win with Shane Monson, Ben Hoesing, Rod Miller and Dan Hanselman completing the top five. It was the first engine claim in the four year history of the NKF Hobby Stock Tour.

The Audubon Speedway in Audubon, Iowa, is next up for the NKF Tour as both divisions visit the lightning fast high-banked oval for the first time on Tuesday night, June 5th.

Another rainout postponed the Tour's debut at Audubon so a return to Park Jefferson was next on the schedule where we saw one of the closest finishes ever for the NKF Tour.

Peck By Inches For NKF Tour Checkers At Park Jefferson

Jefferson, SD (June 8) – Just when it looked like Greg Peck would not parlay a front row start into a feature win, the Sioux City, Iowa, driver used a nice move and a bit of lapped traffic to nip Rich Hesse at the line for the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature win at the Park Jefferson Speedway Friday night.

Mike Jensen used his pole position start to outrun Peck to turn one for the lead at the outset of the seventeen-lap headliner. Peck kept pace in his Gateway sponsored #2x Modified and on lap six he eased past Jensen to take the lead. Hesse, who started sixth was on the move and began to work on the leader using the outside groove. After three or four laps of side-by-side action, Hesse earned the advantage with Peck now tucking in behind him in the upper groove. On the final lap, slower traffic came into play and Peck made one last dive to the inside of turns three and four. The two leaders exited turn four wheel-to-wheel with Peck taking the victory by just a few inches at the finish line.

Jensen held on for a third place finish followed by Dr. Wally Wagner and Jason Weatherton. Jim Cole finished in the sixth spot after starting twenty-first. Worthington, Minnesota, driver Kevin Pospisil used an eleventh place run to takeover the lead in the NKF Tour’s Northwest Bonus standings.

The NKF Tour Modifieds return to action Wednesday night, June 13th, at the Dubuque Speedway in support of the Budweiser Open Late Model Shootout.

Dubuque was a track that I had not been to often before we started to run Tour races there and I absolutely fell in love with the place. To this day it remains one of my favorites with its wide corners and progressive banking.

Defending Champion Barker Returns To NKF Victory Lane In Dubuque

Dubuque, Iowa (June 13) – During the 2000 National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure for Modifieds Ron Barker found his way to victory lane five times enroute to the Tour championship. His first win on the 2001 Tour came on Wednesday night in a topsy-turvy event at his hometown track, the Dubuque Speedway.

Drivers were going from front to back and back to front throughout the twenty lap main event. On the start Mike Burbridge made a strong move in turn three to grab the lead from his second row start, but he could not make it stick in turn four looping the car and forcing a restart. Scott Megonigle paced the first official lap before yielding to Scott Nesteby on lap two. With Megonigle and Rich Smith stalking him close behind Nesteby would lead the race until the ninth lap when the red flag appeared as Jeff Valentine turned his car over one time in turn four.

It was on the restart that the race turned as contact between Smith and Nesteby sent the field scrambling. Both drivers were sent to the rear and Smith retired the #D1 to the infield. Dan Chapman who was running fourth at the time actually suffered the most damage as he headed into the pits to change a flat tire and to correct some sheet metal damage. When the green flag re-appeared it was Megonigle again out front, but only for the tenth circuit as Ron Barker slipped by on the bottom groove the next lap. Current Tour point leader Darin Thye charged into second, but was soon replaced by Jed Hurst. Chapman was on the fly from the back and as Barker nailed down the win, Chapman worked his way past Hurst for the runner-up honors. Hurst, Thye and Scott Fridley, who had started fifteenth, completed the top five.

The NKF Tour Modifieds will be joined by the Tour Hobby Stocks for three events next week, June 19th, 20th & 21st. Tuesday night will be at the Audubon Speedway, Wednesday night at the Independence Motor Speedway and Thursday night at the Cresco Speedway for the annual Mighty Howard County Fair.

The promoter that brought us in to the high banks of Audubon was none other than multi-time IMCA Stock Car champion Mike Nichols. Mike is another one of those friends that I made from running the Tour and even though we haven't had much interaction over the past decade I bet that I could draw out that saw infectious smile from him if I approached him with a hand extended. That is if he still recognized me with the gray hair!

Reetz and Lampe Walk Away From NKF Competition At Audubon

Audubon, Iowa  – Two drivers who are capable of winning from any starting position both found themselves on the pole after the re-draw for their respective features Tuesday night at the Audubon Speedway. The result was two flag-to-flag victories as Craig Reetz and Jim Lampe ran away with wins during the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure’s debut appearance at the western Iowa speedplant.

Russ Byriel gave chase to Reetz during the early portion of the twenty-lap Modified feature before yielding to Mike Molle mid-race. Molle may have been able to mount a challenge for the lead, but instead he had his hands full with Rod Schuermann as the two battled for the runner-up honors. Reetz crossed the checkers with a five car-length advantage over Molle and Scheuermann with Brian Schmitt and Bill Osbahr completing the top five.

Twenty of the twenty-two Hobby Stocks on hand started the feature, but nobody could maintain the torrid pace set by Jim Lampe. Chris Mills ran second early in the event in his first ever Audubon and NKF Tour appearance, but track regulars Rod Hansen, Bill Richards and Jason Paysen were able to chase him down pushing Mills back to fifth at the finish.

The NKF Modified and Hobby Stock Tour will return to the Audubon Speedway on Thursday night July 26th during the county fair.

An event at Independence followed by our annual visit to the Mighty Howard County Fair in Cresco were next on the docket.

Mufflers Save Duffy, Wroten Cruises In NKF Action At Independence

Independence, Iowa (June 20)  – A fast Modified, good driving skills and great hearing all combined to put Darin Duffy in victory lane at the Independence Motor Speedway Wednesday night during the first of three visits by the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure. In Hobby Stock action Nick Wroten drove one of his own creations, a Dominator Chassis to an impressive victory.

Dave Stricker and Ed Thomas started the twenty-five-lap Modified feature from the front row and it took the first two laps for Stricker to shake free from Thomas for the lead. Randy Trefz soon joined the battle for the top spot and, two laps later, Darin Duffy made his way into the hunt after starting from the nine hole. Stricker did a nice job holding back all of his challengers until the thirteenth lap when Duffy was able to make the pass using the high side. The caution flag appeared a lap later with two drivers who had started at the back of the pack, Jerry King and Jerry Luloff now running fifth and sixth. On the restart the leaders all went to the bottom while King and Luloff charged to the cushion. It only took three laps for King to move into second and he was poised to take the lead from the low-running Duffy on the following circuit, but as it turned out King’s charge was a little too loud.

During weekly races at Independence mufflers are required on the Modifieds, but for this special event they were optional and while several drivers took their mufflers off, Duffy left his on. This allowed him to hear King on the high-side and just before he could make his move Duffy moved up there too. King tried to find another line to get around the leader but to no avail as Duffy picked up the win. A lapped car spinning down low with two laps remaining created a melee that eliminated both Trefz and Luloff while Richard VonKrog also saw a top five finish evaporate as a tire went flat during the caution. Behind Duffy and King it was Stricker, Thomas and Mike Gill in the top five.

Kyle Scheel paced the field for the fir six circuits of the Hobby Stock main until Wroten, who is a regular in the track’s IMCA Stock Car class, moved into the top spot. Only a couple of close calls with lapped traffic stood between Wroten and the checkers and he passed the test with ease for the win. Scheel did a nice job of holding off Jeff Wedemeier for the second spot while Rod Miller used his fourth place finish to take over the Tour’s point lead. Jeff Roete rounded out the top five.

The NKF Heartland Tour returns to Independence once again on Wednesday, August 22nd, and Saturday, September 1st.

Three Wide To The Checkers For Both NKF Tour Features At Cresco

Cresco, Iowa (June 21)  – For the fourth straight year the Mighty Howard County Fair and the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure teamed up for an exciting night of racing action for a great cause, and Thursday night saw both Tour features come right down to the wire. Todd Ihde of Decorah held on for the Modified checkers while Kevin Donlan found the Hobby Stock victory lane.

Ihde started from the pole of the twenty-five lap NKF Tour Modified feature and immediately assumed the lead at the drop of the green. Defending Tour champion, Ron Barker, quickly moved from his third row starting spot in to challenge and on lap eight Barker was able to make the high groove stick for the advantage. As Barker pulled away Ihde had his hands full with Brad Rain and Bruce Hanford, plus Darin Duffy was coming to the front after starting eighth. Barker appeared to have things well in hand until a caution appeared on lap nineteen. While the field was idling around the track, Barker’s #37B stalled with distributor cap woes ending his night. Ihde reassumed the lead on the restart and was able to put a couple of car-lengths on his challengers as they jockeyed for position behind him. Duffy moved into second with four to go and set his sights on Ihde, while Hanford slipped by Rain and appeared to have the low line coming to him. On the final lap the leaders went to a staggered three-wide formation with Ihde up top, Duffy in the middle and Hanford down low. At the checkers it was Ihde by about a foot over Duffy who had Hanford’s nose under him for a close third. Rain was right behind the lead trio for fourth while Tim Heins completed the top five.

The twenty-lap Hobby Stock headliner was equally exciting with Dan Christopher pacing the field for the first four circuits. Kevin Donlan took over on lap five while most eyes were focused on the quick progress being made by the sixth row starters Tory Reicks and Steve Holthaus. Reicks had worked the cushion all the way up to second on lap sixth, but on the following lap his right rear axle broke in turn three sending him into a spin that collected Holthaus and sent the rest of the field scrambling. Both cars were eliminated in the mishap. On the restart Jeremy Moellers picked up the chase of Donlan while Jeff Larson, who had started thirteenth, was now on the march. Coming to the white flag Moellers went to the top groove while Larson was digging on the inside and the three brought the crowd to their feet as they stayed in that formation for the entire final lap. Donlan kept his cool and held his line to earn the win by a car-length while Moellers edged out Larson by inches for the runner-up spot. Kyle Schissel and Adam Speicher completed the top five.

The Modifieds have an exciting week ahead on the NKF Tour as they will run for $1,000-to-win on Tuesday night, June 26th, at Hawkeye Raceway in Blue Grass, then it is off to Missouri for a $3,000-to-win show at Callaway Raceway on Thursday and Friday, June 28th & 29th, and $1,500-to-win on Saturday night, June 30th, at the Wheatland Raceway. The Tuesday show at Blue Grass will also include the NKF Tour Hobby Stocks in the first of two events for the Hawkeyeland Bonus.

Governor’s Cup Wins For Bull and Yeast In Blue Grass NKF Action

Blue Grass, Iowa (June 26)  – John Bull held off the persistent challenges of Rich Smith to win his third National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure Modified feature of the season Tuesday night at Hawkeye Raceway. Bill Yeast took advantage of Brian Bushong’s misfortune to capture the companion Hobby Stock feature during the track’s 16th Annual Governor’s Cup event.

The original start of the 35-lap Modified headliner had a major impact on the event. Inside second row starter Randy Wages was able to slip into the lead as the field came around for lap one, but as the leaders went into turn one front row starters Bob Dominacki and Mitch Way tangled with Way’s car ending up on top of Dominacki’s, eliminating two of the pre-race favorites. Wages picked up the lead again on the restart, but it was short-lived as John Bull powered by on the inside a lap later. Rich Smith, who had started sixth, soon followed him into second and the race was on between the two Quad City hotshoes. Smith tried several times to get under the leader to no avial as Bull held on for his third victory on the 2001 NKF Tour. Mike Garland started nineteenth and put on quite a show coming to the front, but as he tried to take third place away from Bruce Hanford on the final lap he clipped an infield tire and spun sending him back to a thirteenth place finish. Corey Hallahan came from thirteenth to finish fourth behind Hanford while Wages fought back from a tire change to take fifth.

Bill Yeast was the early leader in the fifteen lap Hobby Stock main until lap seven when his contact with a lapped car brought out the caution. On the restart Brian Bushong muscled his way to the front only to see his night come to an end with mechanical problems five laps later. Yeast picked up the lead from there and held back Joe Beal for the win. Milo Veloz came home in third followed by Randy Exline and Steve Gustaf who had started fifteenth.

The NKF Tour Modifieds are now off to Missouri for a $3,000-to-win show at Callaway Raceway on Thursday and Friday, June 28th & 29th, and $1,500-to-win on Saturday night, June 30th, at the Wheatland Raceway. The next action for the Tour’s Hobby Stocks will be on Tuesday, July 3rd, at the CJ Raceway.

Finally, the anticipated big money trip to central Missouri with stops at Fulton and Wheatland was upon us and once again weather threatened the two day show at the Callaway Raceway leaving us all to wonder what might have been had the weather actually cooperated.

Callaway NKF Tour Three Grand To Walker

Fulton, Missouri (June 28 & 29) – Darin Walker shook off a two hour rain delay, a hole in his radiator and a stellar field of Modified drivers from throughout the Midwest to pick up the $3,000 paycheck during the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure event at Callaway Raceway.

The Friday night finale was set back for two hours when a small, non-threatening cloud let loose a ten minute deluge just before hot laps were set to begin leaving the track looking more like a pond than a racing surface. The Callaway Raceway crew jumped into action and, with the assistance of all of the drivers on hand in the five divisions, the track was ready for racing at ten o’clock.

Johnny Bone Jr. and Darin Walker had earned the front row starting spots for the forty-lap headliner from Thursday night’s events, but during the final set of hot laps for the qualified cars Walker’s engine temperature shot up beyond the comfort level. A leaking radiator was diagnosed and the change was made just in time for the start of the main event. Bone and Walker ran lap one side-by-side with Walker establishing himself as the leader on lap two. Steve Payne quickly moved to the front from his sixth starting spot and began to mount a challenge for the lead. The Callaway Raceway favorites brought the crowd to their feet for the next several laps battling back and forth until lap fifteen when Payne retired to the pits with front-end damage. Gary Blackburn Jr. took up the chase from there as Walker maintained his advantage, but as the laps wound down Blackburn had to put his challenge on hold as he had to deal with Randy Zimmerman. Zimmerman, who had started twenty-fourth, moved into second late and appeared to have something for the leader until Blackburn found a new groove on the outside to regain the runner-up spot in the closing laps. Zimmerman edged out Bone for third at the finish with Jeff Waggoner completing the top five.

The Callaway Raceway fans and sponsors presented the Central Missouri Kidney Association with $1,100 from the event and there is a possibility that the NKF Tour Modifieds may return to the Central Missouri oval again this fall.

The NKF Tour at Wheatland was well before Forrest Lucas invested in the facility making it the "Diamond of the Dirt", but it was still a pretty nice little facility that had only been in operation for a few years. I was glad to have the opportunity to work a race here before it became the immaculate Lucas Oil Speedway.

Zimmerman Nips Teammate For NKF Victory At Wheatland

Wheatland, Missouri (June 30) – Wayne and Dane Larson couldn’t have asked for better results from their drivers Saturday night as Randy Zimmerman and Adam Larson finished one-two as the National Kidney Foundation Heartland Tour for a Cure visited the Wheatland Raceway for the first time.

Jeff Cutshaw made a strong move early to snare the lead on lap one from his outside row two starting position. Adam Larson found the high groove to his liking and was soon putting the heat on Cutshaw. Larson swept past on the eighth circuit and began to open up a lead while drivers such as Scott Drake, Randy Zimmerman, Bruce Hanford and Johnny Bone Jr. were busy working their way to the front from deep in the field. After a lap ten caution, Zimmerman looked as if he had been shot out of a cannon passing at least a car a lap until he was even with the leader. The two teammates ran side-by-side for one circuit before Zimmerman gained the advantage on lap eighteen. Larson tried to keep pace, but there was no stopping Zimmerman as he pulled away for the $1,500 victory. Larson came home the runner-up with Johnny Bone Jr., who started sixteenth, and Scott Drake who started nineteenth finishing third and fourth. Hanford, who had to start at the rear after changing a tire on a first lap caution, appeared to have the fifth position in hand until his rear-end snapped in half in turn four just short of the checkers. Jeff Cutshaw was there to pick up the position.

The NKF Tour Modifieds now head in to northern Illinois for a Monday night, July 2nd, date at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Pecatonica before returning to Iowa for a July 3rd race, along with the NKF Tour Hobby Stocks, at the CJ Raceway in Columbus Junction.
