A Look Back To Shiverfest 2004

Donnellson, Iowa  – Darin Thye fought back the persistent challenges of Bruce Hanford to top a stellar field of fifty-three Modifieds at the fifth running of “Shiverfest” at the Lee County Speedway Sunday night. The event, that was postponed from Saturday due to heavy rains in the area on Friday, drew over 150 cars in five divisions with Zach VanDerBeek topping the Stock Car field and Jeremy Hamlin winning the Hobby Stock feature. Dennis Schulte and the combination of Jason and Jeremy Billings also erned their way into victory lane on a beautiful night in late October.

Thye started on the pole of the twenty-five-lap Modified finale and first had to deal with pressure from Larry Herring. Hanford, who started eighth, made it a three car battle mid-race and then ran several laps side-by-side with the leader. There was no stopping Thye, however, as he maintained his momentum off the top groove to take the win by a car-length. Hanford and Herring were next in line followed by Tom Goble and Mitch Way.

Pete Agee and Ryan Cook diced it out for the top spot early in the Stock Car main before Cook went for a spin just after taking the lead on lap four. VanDerBeek picked up the challenge on the restart on slipped past Agee on lap seven for the lead and the eventual victory. Jason Cook came from row six to finish second with Agee holding down third. Ryan Cook recovered to finish fourth ahead of former track champion Rich Vogt.

It was all Jeremy Hamlin in the fifteen-lap Hobby Stock headliner. Kirk Kinsley mounted a challenge early but when a flat tire sent him pit side Hamlin coasted in to victory. John Oliver Jr. was the runner-up followed by Chris Wibbell, Mark Steinke and northeast Iowa’s Casey Walsh. The Billings combo held off Justin Malone and Jeff Shellady to win their first-ever Thunder Car feature race and Dennis Schulte and his son Tyler put on an amazing display of racing through heavy traffic in the Wild Thing feature with Dennis prevailing.

Shiverfest must again be considered a complete success as over $1,100 was raised for the Southeast Renal Dialysis Units in Mt. Pleasant, Burlington and Keokuk.
