In each of the past four years I have started off my report of our Michigan state point standings with a compliment of how the state has stuck with one rules package (UMP) for Late Models across all tracks in the state and how that leads to car counts that are usually twenty or more at each event. Unfortunately I cannot make that statement anymore as one of the tracks added a Crate Late Model class in 2020 so it will now be interesting to see if other tracks do the same and they end up spreading the cars and drivers out over the two divisions making for car counts of ten or twelve in each. I hope not, but once you open Pandora's box of having different rules packages for a similar class there is no going back.
The Michigan Late Model state points has a new champion in 2020 as Travis Stemler takes the top spot on the list putting up twenty-six top five finishes with eight of them being feature wins. Stemler has been a regular in the top ten of the state points since we started tabulating them finishing eighth twice, ninth last year and fourth in 2018. Dona Marcoulier is the 2020 runner-up after winning eleven feature events in his twenty-three top fives. Same story for the driver from Houghton Lake as he has been third three times and tied for seventh once over the past four years. Two-time champion Ryan Vanderveen (2016 and 2019) comes home third this year with just fourteen top five finishes where ten of them ended in victory lane.

In Michigan you have UMP Modifieds and IMCA Modifieds and we combine them together in one standardized list with the 2020 champion being veteran driver Gary Vandermark from Lowell. Vandermark's twenty-two top five finished led the way and eight of them were feature wins giving him his first state championship after ranking in the top ten each of the past four seasons. His best showing came in 2018 when he finished third. Jeff Erickson Jr. is the runner-up on the strength of ten feature wins in eighteen top five finishes. His previous best showing on this list was a tenth place ranking in 2016. Collin Thirlby completes the podium as the driver from Traverse City was a five time feature winner in twenty-one top fives in 2020. Thirlby continues his climb towards the top of this list after finishing seventh in 2018 and fourth last year.

In the Winged Sprint Car division it is Ohio's Jared Horstman who claims the title as the state's best winning three times in nine top fives. No stranger to the tracks in Michigan, Horstman has ranked no worse than fifteenth over the past four years with his previous best being a fourth place finish in 2017. He was just two points better than defending champion Ryan Ruhl who actual had one more win at four and one more top five at ten than did Horstman. Ruhl has now been in the top four of the Michigan Points in all five seasons that they have been tabulated. Two more out of state drivers tie for the third spot with Max Stambaugh and Zane Devault.
