I used to rave about how the tracks in the state of Michigan maintained strong car counts by not spreading out their divisions. Late Models ran under UMP rules and usually had more than twenty a night. They have both UMP Modifieds and IMCA Modifieds, some tracks running them on the same night but there are no Sport Mods or Pro Mods in the state so again car counts stay solid. The story stays the same in the Modifieds, but as I noted last year the invasion of the Crate Models has begun and as predicted the car counts have started to spread thin. I did not include the Crates in the 2021 point standings, but to be consistent with the rest of the states that we area tracking I will be forced to do so if we continue to do Michigan in 2022. There is no putting the genie back in the bottle.
After a bit of a down season in 2020 where he ranked twenty-second on this list, Brandon Thirlby came charging back to prominence winning nine features in twenty-five top five finishes to earn his first Michigan Points Late Model title. Runner-up Greg Gokley also made a big jump over last year when he was sixteenth taking five wins among is twenty-four top fives while Ryan Vanderveen stands on the podium in third as a ten time feature winner in twenty-two top fives. Vanderveen is a two-time champion in 2016 and 2019.

In the combined Modified standings it was Ionia's A.J. Ward taking his second Michigan Points title winning nineteen times in his thirty-four top five finishes. Ward was last the champion in 2018 and finished seventh in the 2020 points race. Collin Thirlby is the runner-up often taking advantage of racing both a UMP and an IMCA Mod on the same night as he had ten feature wins in his thirty-four top fives. Thirlby was third on the 2020 list and in 2021 it is Jeff Reay who takes the third position as an eight time feature winner in twenty-nine top five finishes. Reay only scored nine points last season.

For the second year in a row a driver from Ohio is the Winged Sprint Car champion in these Michigan Points where we use the same 5-point scale that is used with the All Iowa Points. Max Stambaugh from Lima, Ohio, won nine times on Michigan soil and was in the top five nineteen times here in 2021. Stambaugh is the sixth different Sprint Car champion in the six years that we have been tracking the state. The 2019 champ Ryan Ruhl is this year's runner-up winning six times in fifteen top five finishes and Dustin Daggett takes third with eleven top fives including three feature wins.
