Three "First Time" All Iowa Points Champions In The Winged Sprint Cars for 2022

With the world capital of Sprint Car racing, the Knoxville Raceway, right here in Iowa, race fans are treated to some of the best Sprint Car talent in the world at all of the tracks in the state, and those that are just across the border. I believe that is why we almost always see the same names at the top of our All Iowa Points lists year after year. National Sprint Car Hall of Fame member Terry McCarl is a twelve-time champion in the 410 class. Mark Dobmeier and Danny Lasoski are each six-time champions in the top class, while Jack Dover has seven 360 titles to his name just to name a few. It has been difficult for new names to crack the top and in fact it has been since 1997 that we had two first time All Iowa Points champions when Skip Jackson won the 410's and Justin Henderson captured his first of two 360 titles to go with the 410 championship that he won last year.

In 2022 we actually have three new champions, including the 305 division that we first started tracking back in 2006. Perhaps the youth movement has picked up steam, or could we be establishing the new list of drivers that will control the All Iowa Points for the next two decades?

The 2022 champion in the 410 division is Austin McCarl, the oldest son of Terry McCarl making them the ninth father-son duo to win All Iowa Points championships in the fifty-six years that we have compiled the points for. Came you name all nine? I will list them out at the end of this entry and before the points rundown for all three Sprint Car divisions. It was a tight battle throughout the second half of the season between the top three divers before McCarl prevailed chalking up two feature wins in his nineteen top five finishes. Two-time champion Brian Brown lands in second with four wins in fifteen top fives while Aaron Reutzel finishes third after leading the way through the first half of the season. The Texas transplant picked up five wins in his eleven top fives.

World of Outlaws regular Carson Macedo ranks fourth just ahead of the teenage sensation Ryan Timms while Ayrton Gennetten takes sixth in his first full year of 410 racing. In each of our nine AIP divisions we find the driver that finishes the highest in his or her first year of earning points in that class and for the 410's the "Newcomer of the Year" is Kaleb Johnson who scored fourteen points and tied for 17th in the final standings. This year there we only seven drivers that scored points in the 410's for the first time.

He was the USAC National Midgets Rookie-of-the-Year in 2021, he earned the 360 Knoxville Nationals Rookie-of-the-Year honors this past August and seventeen-year-old Chase Randall adds an All Iowa Points Championship to his resume' as well here in 2022. Winning seven feature races, most of them with the Sprint Invaders circuit based in southeast Iowa, and posting twenty top-five finishes while also racing weekly at Knoxville for the first time, the young Texan kept Terry McCarl from capturing his thirteenth All Iowa Points Championship by just seven points. So for now T-Mac's record of twelve AIP titles is still three better than any other driver although he had a another stellar season focusing on the 360 class and winning six times in sixteen top five showings.

Doing double duty on most nights at Knoxville, Aaron Reutzel also finishes third in the 360 class with five feature wins in just eleven top five finishes. Three-time champion Clint Garner was in the hunt all year before slipping to fourth at the end while Paul Nienheiser drove Scott Bonar's #50 ride to a fifth place ranking. The 410 Newcomer of the Year Kaleb Johnson also had a solid season in the 360's placing sixth and you have to look all the way down to the drivers that scored six points on the season to find the 360 Newcomer of the Year Zach Daum who is better known for his long time success in a Midget.

Lee Goos Jr. has topped our South Dakota state points in both 2021 and 2022 and this year when you factor in the other All Iowa Points paying tracks as well, he also takes the AIP honors in the 305 division here. Six feature wins in twenty-one top five finishes gives this year's champion an eight point edge over the defending champ Stu Snyder who captured six wins in his nineteen points paying features. The 2020 champion of the 305's and the 2003 champ of the 360's, Dusty Ballanger finishes third here in 2022 with four wins in twenty top fives showing just how close we came to having at least one repeat titleist.

The 2018 champion Mike Houseman Jr. finishes in fourth, Tyler Groenendyk was fifth and seven-time feature winner Cody Wehrle ties for sixth with Minnesota's Trevor Serbus. Knoxville Pro Sprint series driver Scotty Johnson is the Newcomer of the Year in the 305's as he won four times on his way to a twelfth place finish in the standings.

While the Sprint Car season is complete on All Iowa Points tracks there is still three more weekends of racing on the schedule that will decide the final standings in our other six divisions. So get on out and enjoy some late season action, especially this coming weekend when summer-like temperatures are in the forecast.
